NY Governor Kathy Hochul expressed regret after she claimed Black kids in the Bronx don’t know the word “computer”.
Gov. Hochul made the comment to billionaires and business leaders at a business conference in California on Monday.
She intended to highlight the lack of diverse employees in technology. But instead, she insulted Black people.
Hochul said, “right now we have young black kids growing up in the Bronx who don’t even know what the word ‘computer’ is.”
As her comments drew backlash on social media, the governor expressed regret over her choice of words.
Hochul insisted that she “misspoke and I regret it… Of course Black children in the Bronx know what computers are,” she said in a statement. “The problem is that they too often lack access to the technology needed to get on track to high-paying jobs in emerging industries like A.I.”
Black Democrats are outraged over Hochul’s “ignorant slur”.
In his editorial for the NY Post, Adam B. Coleman wrote, “Black Americans like me are often guilted into defaulting to supporting the Democratic Party — but with friends like the Democrats, who needs enemies?”
Users on a Manosphere board comprised of mostly Democrats also vented their frustration.
One person wrote: “The Bronx is 56% Spanish and Blacks still somehow are the people she chooses to single out. She could’ve just said ‘kids in The Bronx’ and offended everyone equally.”
Another user wrote, “The point she was making was going nowhere. She don’t know kids, education, the Bronx, the accessibility to computers in 2024 and the list goes on. But she is at one of these talking head events and needs to fill up time talking to make herself seem smart.”
A third person wrote: “unless she’s looking to raise money for laptops for all of the children in The Bronx she need to watch her mouth.”
