Character actress and comedienne Erica Ash died on Monday, July 29, in Los Angeles following a long battle with breast cancer. She was 46.

BET announced Ash’s death in an Instagram post on Monday. “Today, #BETRemembers actress and comedienne Erica Ash who has passed away at the age of 46. We send our deepest condolences and love to her parents, siblings, friends, and family. Fly high Queen.”

But BET deleted the post, which sparked speculation that her death was a hoax.

Ash’s mother, Diann Ash, confirmed her passing to TMZ: “We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of our beloved daughter, sister, and friend Erica Chantal Ash (1977-2024). After a long and courageous battle with cancer, she transitioned peacefully surrounded by her loved ones.”

Stars remembered Ash in tributes on social media on Monday.

“Erica was talented and hilarious whether it was the show ‘Survivor’s Remorse’ or MADtv she would put her all into her work. She would always just be there.. now she’s gone.. My sincere condolences to her family and fans,” Loni Love wrote on Instagram.

Ash was best known for her roles in the sketch comedy show MADtv and the Starz sitcom Survivor’s Remorse.

In February 2006, Ash auditioned for and landed roles in Broadway shows like The Lion King.

After returning from a 2-week gig in Germany, Ash earned a role in the sketch comedy series The Big Gay Sketch Show.

Ash joined the cast of MADtv in 2008. She became the fifth African-American female cast member in the show’s history.

She later played Kevin Hart’s ex-wife in the Real Husbands of Hollywood.

She had a cameo on NBC’s Extended Family in January. It was her last role before her passing.
