According to reports, only 3 Secret Service agents were assigned to Trump on July 13. Homeland Security agents were also assigned to him.

First Lady Jill Biden, who was in Pennsylvania that same day, had 12 Secret Service agents protecting her.

Trump’s request for more Secret Service agents was denied.

Lawmakers grilled Cheatle and called for her resignation during a House committee hearing on Monday.

According to CNBC, Cheatle resisted, saying she was the best-qualified person for the job.

On Tuesday, Cheatle wrote in a letter to Secret Service staff, “In light of recent events, it is with a heavy heart that, I have made the difficult decision to step down as your Director.”

“The Secret Service’s solemn mission is to protect our nation’s leaders and financial infrastructure. On July 13th, we fell short on that mission,” said Cheatle.

“As your Director, I take full responsibility for the security lapse,” she wrote.

Cheatle was recommended for the job by Jill Biden. She served 30 years in the agency.

Cheatle previously managed Global Security for PepsiCo.
