Vice President Harris leads former President Donald Trump in head-to-head polls, according to reports.
Harris has emerged as the likely candidate to replace Biden following his disastrous debate with Trump in June. Harris could become the first female and Indian president in history.
One hypothetical poll shows Harris leading Trump, 49% to 46%.
Harris outperforms Biden, and three other potential candidates commonly floated to replace him, in a hypothetical matchup against Trump — but she would still lose to the former president by two points, according to a CNN/SSRS poll (margin of error 3.5) conducted June 28-30 that also found Biden would lose to Trump by six points.
The New York Times reports President Biden’s campaign is quietly testing Harris’s strength against Trump in a survey.
They did not specify why the survey was being conducted or what the campaign planned to do with the results. It could be read as the team gathering information to present a case to the president that his path forward is slim, or to argue that Mr. Biden is still the strongest standard-bearer for his party.
