Selena Gomez has responded to a politician who threatened to deport her after she posted a video sympathizing with Mexican immigrants.
Gomez was born in Texas, but her father and grandparents are from Mexico. That means she is an anchor baby and she can lose her birthright citizenship and be deported.
An anchor baby is a child born to immigrant or noncitizen parents in another country that grants automatic birthright citizenship.
Thousands of undocumented immigrants have been deported after President Donald Trump signed an executive order last week.
On Monday, Gomez, 32, posted – then quickly deleted – an emotional video about the deportations.
“I just want to say that I’m so sorry. All my people are getting attacked,” the Emilia Pérez star cried in the now-deleted Instagram video. “The children. I don’t understand. I’m so sorry I wish I could do something but I can’t.”
“I don’t know what to do. I’ll try everything, I promise,” she continued. She captioned her video, “I’m sorry” with a Mexican flag emoji.
Gomez’s fans downloaded the video before she deleted it and the clip went viral on Monday.
One politician who saw the video was U.S. Senate candidate Sam Parker. He called for Trump’s border czar to deport the singer/actress back to Mexico.
According to Time magazine, Gomez produced a documentary in 2019 that detailed her paternal grandparents crossing the border from Mexico into the U.S.
Parker referenced the documentary in his X (Twitter) post, which he captioned: “Selena Gomez picked illegals over America b/c she’s the 3rd gen descendent of Mexican illegals who received citizenship in the ’87 Amnesty. She has an entitlement attitude toward America, like her illegal g’parents. Maybe Selena should be deported, too?”
He added: “Deport Selena Gomez.”

Gomez hit back at Parker in an Instagram post. “Oh Mr Parker, Mr Parker. Thanks for the laugh and the threat,” she said.
On Thursday, President Trump signed an executive order revoking birthright citizenship. That means anchor babies like Gomez are at risk of deportation.
However, a federal judge temporarily blocked Trump’s birthright citizenship executive order.
