Ariana Grande responded to rumors of her “secret marriage” to “Wicked” co-star Cynthia Erivo. Rumors swirled last year that Ariana, 31, and Cynthia, 38, were secret lovers.
Speculation recently ran rampant when Cynthia was seen with a ring on that finger.
The “We Can’t Be Friends” singer addressed the rumors in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter on February 11.
“People think we’re secretly married,” Ariana told THR. “I wish I could unsee some things,” she said, referring to disturbing fan art that depicted Ariana and Cynthia as sapphic lovers.
“I mean, wow, I had a feeling, but I didn’t know it would be on this scale or this graphic,” Ariana added.
During their press tour for “Wicked,” the two women often held hands, embraced and whispered to each other. They gushed about each other in emotional interviews.
The pop singer recently broke up with co-star Ethan Slater after dating for 2 years. She reportedly cheated on her then-husband, Dalton Gomez, with Ethan in 2023.
Ariana and Dalton finalized their divorce in March 2024. While Ethan and his ex-wife finalized their divorce in September 2024.
Cynthia was in a longterm domestic partnership with screenwriter and director Lena Waithe. There was even a rumor that Cynthia and Lena, 40, eloped after Lena’s divorce from Alana Mayo was finalized in 2020.
Insiders referred to the British actress as Lena’s “common-law wife.”
Lena raised eyebrows on Instagram recently when she seemed to accuse Cynthia of hooking up with Ariana.
In a series of since-deleted posts in her Instagram Stories, Lena seemed to hint that Cynthia and Ariana are an item.
In one post, Lena wrote a popular quote about trust in relationships. The post was intentionally cut off:
“Maturity in a relationship is when you catch your mind as it is creating a false story about your partner, which is based on inner tension that is unrelated to them. Self-awareness helps decrease unnecessary conflict.”
In another deleted post, Lena wrote “I’m watching you guys in the press tour…”
Social media users noted that Lena apparently lost Cynthia the same way she got her: by cheating on her ex, Alana Mayo, with Cynthia.
Some of Lena’s followers called it “karma” that Lena is experiencing the same painful ordeal that she put Alana through.
