The U.S. government’s longest shutdown ended at 43 days on Wednesday, Nov. 12. President Donald Trump signed the funding bill on Wednesday night, after the House approved the bill.
Trump said the government should never shut down again: “This is no way to run a country.”
The funding lasts through January and allows the government to reopen and pay federal workers who haven’t received paychecks in 6 weeks.
Trump signed the spending bill 2 hours after the House approved the funding by a vote of 222-209. 7 Democratic Senators and 1 independent Senator broke ranks to approve the funding on Monday.
California Governor Gavin Newsom and Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez criticized the “Gang of 8” for crossing the aisle.
Rep. Jim McGovern (D-Mass) Said the bill “leaves families twisting in the wind with zero guarantee there will ever, ever be a vote to extend tax credits to help everyday people pay for their health care.”
But the bill brings back federal workers who were fired by the Trump administration at the start of the shutdown. It also prevents further layoffs through January and compensates federal workers with backpay.
