R&B singer and songwriter Ne-Yo Smith celebrated his eldest daughter’s birthday in a bizarre way on social media. The “When You’re Mad” singer explained how Madilyn Grace Smith’s 15th birthday is affecting him – and he’s not happy about it.
Madilyn was born prematurely in November 2010.
In a post on Instagram, the “Let Me Love You” singer wrote the word “hate” 5 times.
Ne-Yo captioned the post:
“I hate that you’re a teenager now. I hate that boys are cute now. I hate that clothes fit you different now. I HATE IT!!! But I love you. I love your sense of style. I love your taste in music. I love being your dad. Happy 15th bday my love. As you grow into a young woman and I hate every minute of it, know that I will ALWAYS LOVE YOU. NO MATTER WHAT.”
Some fans were disturbed by the tone of Ne-Yo’s post. But others praised him.
In addition to Madilyn, Ne-Yo shares a son, Mason Evan Smith, with Atlanta business woman Monyetta Shaw Carter.
Ne-Yo married Crystal Renay Williams on February 20, 2016. They welcomed three children: Shaffer Jr., Roman, and Isabella.
Crystal filed for divorce in 2022, citing irreconcilable differences. She caught Ne-Yo cheating on her and accused him of fathering a child out of wedlock.
The allegation was true. They finalized their divorce on January 26, 2023.
According to PEOPLE, Ne-Yo has 7 children with 3 women.
He has 2 children, Braiden and Brixton, with Instagram model and influencer Sade Jenea Bagnerise.
Ne-Yo said his children have helped with his career. “I don’t know about any other entertainers and their kids, but my kids actually dig my music,” he told PEOPLE in 2021. “They’re actually the best people to get critiques on my music from.”
