British heavyweight boxing champion Anthony Joshua survived a fatal car crash in Nigeria on Monday.

Officials say Joshua, 36, was sitting in the backseat of a black Lexus SUV that collided with a truck on a highway near Lagos.

5 men were involved in the crash that killed two people.

Photos from the scene show the shirtless boxer being helped out of the back seat of the Lexus SUV. Broken glass and blood are on the backseat around Joshua.

Local officials say the two people who died were “male foreign nationals”.

“Joshua was seated behind the driver with another person behind him,” said an eyewitness to the crash. Another male sat beside the driver. Four male occupants were in the SUV.

Speed contributed to the accident, officials said. A tire on the SUV exploded causing the driver to lose control and collide with a red truck.

The SUV was “suspected to be traveling beyond the legally prescribed speed limit”, according to officials. No one was charged in the accident.

The Lagos-Ibadan expressway is known as one of Nigeria’s deadliest roads, according to the BBC. The highway has heavy traffic during the holidays as many Nigerians living abroad visit for the festive period.

Joshua is the son of British Nigerian parents. He was born in England but grew up in Nigeria where he attended a boarding school.

He returned to England after his parents divorced.

Joshua is a three-time heavyweight boxing champion who fought in a “rigged” boxing match with YouTuber Jake Paul in Miami on December 19.

Jake, 28, was knocked down during the boxing match. He claimed his jaw was broken in 2 places.

Jake was suspended from boxing for 60 days. The suspension is said to be routine after being knocked out.
