Someone used Meta’s AI support bot to hack former President Barack Obama’s Instagram page over the weekend. Multiple high-profile IG accounts were also hacked by people using Meta’s AI assistant bots to change an account holder’s email address.

The AI support bot sent a verification code to the hacker. Once the verification code was entered, the AI support bot sent the hacker a link to reset Obama’s username and password, allowing the hacker to gain access to the account.

The hacker then deleted Obama’s posts and wrote new posts. Instagram has since blocked the hacker and restored the page. But many other high-profile IG users, including beauty retailer Sephora, lost their accounts.

Meta said in a statement on Monday: “This issue has been resolved, and we are securing impacted accounts.”

Social media users posted videos showing how easily the hacks occurred. The breach raises security concerns about the risks of using AI in a corporate environment without proper guardrails in place.

Meta/Facebook recently laid off 8,000 workers – about 10% of its workforce – and replaced them with AI assistants.

In a March press release, Meta/Facebook said AI features were being rolled out on its social media platforms including Facebook and Instagram. The press release said the AI assistants could “take action for you on a growing set of requests directly within Facebook and in the future, on Instagram”.

“The Meta AI support assistant is a major step in our work to deliver stronger support on our apps,” Meta said.

Meta is a major investor in AI over the years. Founder Mark Zuckerberg spent $145 billion on AI infrastructure, including data centers.

However, Meta lost over $80 billion on the Metaverse projects, including Ray-Ban smart glasses, the Horizon Worlds platform, and VR headsets.

Some X users complain that the exploit isn’t patched and Instagram accounts are still being hacked.
