Fans say Jay-Z wore an afro wig at the Roots Picnic concert in Philadelphia on Saturday. The 56-year-old rapper performed a 35-song set at the annual Roots Picnic music festival. He dissed fellow rappers Drake, Nicki Minaj, Ye West, and others in a freestyle.

Jay-Z debuted his blowout afro that replaced his signature locs.

During an appearance on Loren LaRosa’s podcast, Jay-Z’s hairstylist, Letisia “Lucky Letty” Ravelo said his afro is “very much real and “it’s not a lacefront.”

She said Jigga grew his hair over 8 years and it took another hairstylist six days to unravel his locs.

Lucky Letty said the hairstylist, who goes by @Houstonlocs on Instagram, used a conditioner and detangle spray to moisturize Jay-Z’s locs before she started the physically exhausting and daunting task of unlocking and unraveling his matted hair.

Lucky Letty explained the process of hair strands knotting together until it is matted and dry. She said Jay-Z’s hair was “free form wick locs,” that was maintained by twisting it regularly.

She explained that Jay-Z’s locs “was much easier to take out” because he didn’t have many knots and tangles to unravel with the comb.

“You just let the product penetrate the hair and the more it penetrates the hair it just gets softer,” she explained. “You just gently go through it and gradually get to the root of the hair.”
