White House fence jumper Omar Gonzalez was not tackled just inside the door of the White House as was originally claimed by the Secret Secret.
Utah Congressman Jason Chaffetz told CNN on Monday that, after Gonzalez scaled the White House perimeter fence on Sept. 19, he raced through an open door of the White House, turned a corner and dashed down a hallway leading into the East Room, where he was finally apprehended near the Green Room.
The fact that Gonzalez breached White House security and made it that far into the most secure home in America was troubling to lawmakers. They called Secret Service Director Julia Pierson on the carpet to explain her agency’s failures.
“It’s unacceptable,” Pierson told members of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee on Tuesday.
“I’ll make sure that it does not happen again,” she said meekly, after admitting there were 6 fence jumpers just in the past year alone.
But lawmakers were not satisfied with her excuses. They point to the low morale and high turnover rates within the agency.
The Secret Service agent who was guarding the front door was only on the job for 6 months. And other Secret Service agents have been caught drinking on the job and cavorting with prostitutes.
“I’m worried that over the last several years, security has gotten worse – not better,” Chaffetz said.
Since the incident, the White House has erected a second barrier around the perimeter, beefed up security and locked the door leading to the Obama family’s private quarters.
President Obama and his daughters had just departed the White House in Chopper One 4 minutes before the intrusion. Mrs. Obama was not with them and she was not at home at the time.
