American novelist Nelle Harper Lee died in her sleep on Friday. She was 89.
Lee wrote only one book, the modern literary classic To Kill a Mockingbird. She never wrote another.
Mary Badham was 10 years old when she met Ms. Lee on the set of the 1962 movie, To Kill a Mockingbird. Badham starred as tomboy Scout Finch. Like Lee, Scout was the daughter of a respected attorney who was committed fighting to racial injustice. They remained friends for 50 years.
“She was a dear friend,” said Badham in an exclusive interview with The NY Daily News.
An emotional Badham recalled her favorite memories of Lee: “The last few times of being together, when we were just laughing and talking,” she said.
To Kill a Mockingbird was published in 1060, 3 years after Lee turned in a manuscript with a different title, Go Set a Watchman.
The publishers — the now-defunct J. B. Lippincott Company, made her rewrite the manuscript over and over until, out of frustration, she flung the pages out a window into the snow.
She called her literary agent in tears. Her agent, Tay Hohoff, told her to march outside immediately and pick up every page.
“I was a first-time writer, so I did as I was told,” Lee said in 2015.
After 3 years of setbacks, Ms. Lee reshaped Go Set a Watchman into Mockingbird, a novel worthy of publishing. But she didn’t have high hopes.
“I never expected any sort of success with Mockingbird. I was hoping for a quick and merciful death at the hands of the reviewers but, at the same time, I sort of hoped someone would like it enough to give me encouragement,” she told Roy Newquist in a rare interview in 1964.
To Kill a Mockingbird was an immediate bestseller, racking up awards and accolades including a Pulitzer prize.
Of the Oscar award-winning film adaptation of To Kill a Mockingbird, Horton Foote said: “I think it is one of the best translations of a book to film ever made.”
I hate rude azz people. I’m sitting in a room with alleged professional adults and I can’t even hear the speaker because of the side conversations. And these people are not even attempting to lower their voices. Smh.
She was ancient , 1060?
I had no clue this was her one and only book?
I would ask them to be quiet , I don’t care .

Did it EVER snow in Monroeville, Alabama? Imma gone head and call this a lie by ole reclusive ass Harper. A hurricane? Yes. SNOW? In damn near Mobile? WHEN? What year? I can fact check with the old folks.
bwaaahhhaaa
I’m Egyptian tomb weak. LMAO
Report’em.
????? Maybe it snows on the white side of Mobile.
Treat them like the grown children they are and SHUSH they behinds with all the wind in your body…
???
You forgot to say, “It’s 2016…” ?
I like the fact that Scout and Harper were friendly through the years. Did this actress play in anything else? I don’t recognize her name or face.?
I forgot to say…..ESPECIALLY if they are “other”.
Yes she did. Mostly in the 60’s.
GIRL. I was like SNOW? In Monroe, County Alabama? Bish WHUR?
All of us are BLACK…
She was in that episode of twilight zone where the little brother and sister escape from their parents via a pool that leads to an alternate universe…Sound familiar? Maybe not if you’re not a twi fan like me? I think she stopped acting after puberty…
Hush! You know white folks don’t lie. they sprankle . Sprankle a lie here , sprankle a lie there sprankle lies every where . There’s plenty of snow in her part of Bama, just not the kind that falls from the sky.
You guys crack me up ! Dissecting everything .
Nothing gets by the Roses!
I love how Sandra wrote she only wrote one book , to follow it up with she never wrote another. Well writing one book would be self explanatory, however you would be incorrect she wrote 2 books . Her last book was published last year. Do your homework it’s called ” Go set a Watchman”.
RIP. This is a neat story. I loved this move. I remember watching in it school.
Then give’em the “yo mama caught you playin in church” stare. Then shake your head. They DESERVE a second chance.
Lol could have…but not enough to pick up. Where I’m from my momma said it snowed ONE year before I was even thought about. Enough to make snowballs. Never snowed like that again…
LMAO!!!!!!!!!!!
Maybe the weather was segregated back then. Snow on the white folks side, while your people was sweating on the other side. LOL!
May she rest in peace. I loved reading the book then watching that movie as a child. Everytime the show it on TCM I still watch it.
She lived in New York in the 50s. In 1959, she worked as an assistant for the New Yorker. It definitely snows in New York. ?
My teacher had us read the books before we watched the film adaptations. I remember being so disappointed after watching The Great Gatsby ??. Didn’t do the book justice.
I just said that up top lol
No movie ever does…sadly…
IMO very few films do. Hard to beat the power behind written words.
*crying* I can’t even lurk in peace lmao
When we saw that tv on wheels in the classroom lol what joy it was
My daddy nem from Mobile. If it snowed there in 1963ish, and it NEVER hardly EVER snows there, Imma need him to verify this fuggery. Snow on the hot, swap, alligator filled Alabama bayou is ALWAYS memorable.
Those were the BEST days!
She was in something in 2005. A movie called Our Very Own.
Yesssss lol it meant less work
Hmmm. I’ll look it up??
It do. But sometime in the early-mid 1960’s, Harper Lee went to her mama nem house in Monroeville Alabama and hardly EVER came her ass back out
LOL
@Sandra Rose Please if you don’t mind can you do post on the lesser know black inventors and inventions before black history months over? Jenn did an excellent job in the comments with her posts about black greatness. So much so that I found and liked the Facebook page Joe Maddsion “the black Eagle” thanks to her. Thank you in advance Sandra.
????? guhl wake up. It’s not happening. I been wanting that for years here.
The weather is segregated there NOW. Sweater Jesus it will rain on one side of the street and not the other.
I think they did right by TKAM as far as the film goes but alot of the film adaptations fall short.
Maybe they thought it snowed due to all the lice and dandruff dropping from their hair.
Hey! It doesn’t hurt to ask ?
Truuuu ?
don’t hold your breath chile….we can’t even get her to research the truth about the Panthers
I cant eem get her to stop using that 1965 spelling of Koran
lmao……
Right like The Color Purple that movie was steller but the book was even better to me and many others.
Hell we can’t get respect for OUR President. It’s alright if it’s all white ?
My parents are from West Bama. My whole family. My parents said they saw snow ONE time when my dad was 11 and my mom woulda been 8…in 1958. After that? The next time they saw snow was when IBM sent they West Alabammy asses to Endicott, NY for a decade lmao
Even Stephen King books better than the movies. Sometimes. Only exception is The Shining. Few others. I still aint fuggin with The Shining tho.
Nah, not a Twilight fan. Not really my genre.
And a way to take a nap on the low. I wore a uniform to school , so I’d use my cardigan as a cover for my face while I slept. My excuse , I was cold very cold ??.
Go set a Watchman was the original title of To Kill a Mockingbird. That so-called second novel is merely a rough draft of Lee’s one and only book.
But it sure stings to know she gonna nignore you!! LOL
Lol I used to love to watch The Electric Company and Sesame Street so I was wide awake and ready. I saved my sleep for Severance Hall trips with the orchestra playing lol.
The book was published in 1960. So, whatever happened “in the early-mid 1960s,” is irrelevant.
Go set a Watchman was set 20 years after To Kill a Mockingbird. Although it was written before To Kill a Mockingbird, it was published as a sequel.
We watched a lot of old Hollywood movies. My teacher was obsessed with Judy garland and Barbara Streisand. She had a picture of her “kid” aka cat on her desk too. I’ll never forget the day she bought her cat to work, for bring your child to work day. The damn cat spent the whole day in her arms as her taught the class. She had it in a carrier but it kept meowing so she took him out.
There is a whole TRIBE of folks, gaggles, that do not believe she wrote that book.

School is where I saw Dirty Dancing at in music class, The making of Thriller in Spanish class lol I guess that was a treat because it had nothing to do with Espanol.
I live in mobile…. We get flurries…..maybe….. Sometimes….. Not often ????? lol
Go set a watchman was released in 2015. So technically she wrote 2 even though it was the first rough draft of Mockingbird. Its still its own separate book.?
“Go Set A Watchman” by ________________________
Everybody knows she didn’t write the 2015 book.
Rip to Mrs. Lee. I have a signed paperback of “To Kill A Mockingbird” from her when she came to Notre Dame for a book reading a few years ago.
She released her second novel last year, Go Set a Watchman.
She did not write that book. She was described as “frail, hearing- and sight-impaired stroke victim living in a nursing home” last year. Someone else wrote the book. Let Google be your friend.
They’re saying she didn’t write To Kill a Mockingbird either. Which probably explains why she never wrote another book.
It wasn’t. Last year Harper Collins published Lee’s second novel: “Go Set a Watchman.” There was a lot of controversy surrounding it since it was a manuscript she started before Mockingbird, with some of the same characters. Many industry insiders questioned whether she actually wanted it published or whether she was being manipulated into publishing it (I think she was living in a nursing home at the time). But the fact remains that there have been TWO novels published by Lee, not one.
“She never wrote another.”
Sandra, you can’t possibly have written this line. I’m sure you know about all the hubbub last year when her SECOND novel was published. It’s title: “Go Set A Watchman”, published last year by Harper Collins. Lots of controversy about whether she actually wanted the ancient manuscript published or was instead being manipulated by those around her. But that aside, she still has had TWO novels published.
TKAM was published in 1060? Oh. ??
I initially read this as though the segregation consisted of “Sweater Jesus,” who lives on the colder parts of Mobile versus, say, “T-Shirt Jesus,” who lives in the warmer parts of the city.
It’s all because of you… ????
What do you know about “Living Doll” aka Talky Tina?
She wrote 2 books. Do your research Sandra geez…
One of my favs. In fact, one year on here…When I was wishing that everyone got what they asked for that holiday season,,,I wished for Sandra to get exactly what she deserved…a talking Tina doll? I don’t think she caught the shade tho?
Visual arts. Loved it. That projector came down, they wheeled in that projector…with the film in a huge, flat, tin can. Yep, reel to reel. We prayed that thing had sound that matched the lips or someone knew how to set it up properly so the film didn’t snap.
Scout looks a lot like Harper Lee did when she was younger.
Yes that too.
Next time it happens, just walk over and say ‘Excuse me guys, can I tell you something? Shhhhhhhhhhhhhh?!”
I will never read that book because of the controversy. I don’t think she wanted it published at all. If she had she would have published it in the 50+ years after Mockingbird.
I heard they just put together what she wrote in the 1950s, from the original manual script her lawyer discovered in a safety deposit box and published it.
Wow. Keep in a pristine, sealed, dust free box.
I did so as soon as she signed it. I love antiques so I knew what I had when she signed it.
Wrong. They edited the original manuscript and added a lot of information that she didn’t write. It’s interesting that they waited until she was old and feeble to put out this book. Don’t be surprised if they “find” other manuscripts and put out books that she allegedly wrote.
Oh okay thanks.?
Probably worth a lot of money today.
I pray SR doesn’t have any staircases. ??
You ain’t worth a damn, Bren. Smh
One of my social media pals told me about her fave TZ ep. “To Serve Mankind.” I saw it and I haven’t been right since. ?
I couldn’t sell it. It’s history.
Another classic?? To serve Man…It…Its a cookbook?????? Classic tv man??
White folks were just itching to go to outer space. ???? It reminded me so much of the Titanic.
I wish we could have several more Titanics and cookbooks in history. Let them inform Black folks once every ticket is sold out. Lol
???
Her late sister protected her from the vultures. After her sister’s death is when someone befriended Lee and published that book. I read where she had dementia before that so you know that was a fraud! She never intended for book 1 to be published.
From what I studied in my graduate creative writing program, she was traumatized by the intense writing and editing of her first novel and then overwhelmed by its success. Parts of her second book was written decades ago but it’s believed she feared releasing it. You’re correct that it was heavily edited together. I believe she was talented and they will discover new work amongst her things. A good writer is constantly writing…poems…short stories …anything. Much of it is never published.
Exactly. Officially, she has two novels published and she is a Pulitzer Prize winner.
I felt the same way. Did you watch gatsby with leo and if so, did you like it? I thought it did the job visually. It was a beautiful movie as far as the clothing, cars and the way it was shot. In that way, it was one of the most visually beautiful movies I’ve yet seen. Just how I’d imagined it would look when reading the book as a child.
I had a teacher who also brought he cat to school.
Actually, no. Lee only submitted one book to be published. The second manuscript “Go Set a Watchman” was submitted to be published by her handlers.
You’re right, she didn’t want it published. But I plan to read it, due to that fact.
Well I hope you have it insured.
It’s taken care of.
