A yoga instructor is charged with second degree murder after she drove off a cliff to deliberately kill her twin sister, police allege.
Honolulu police say Alexandria Duval, also known as Alison Dadow, intentionally drove her car off a cliff to kill her identical twin sister, Anastasia Duval, also known as Ann Dadow.
The 37-year-old twins were in a Ford Explorer traveling south on Hana Highway when they crashed into a rock wall.
Witnesses saw the two women arguing in the idling car, and the passenger pulling the driver’s hair.
“Then they saw the vehicle “accelerate forward and then take a sharp left over the cliff,” said Maui Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Emlyn Higa.
The car plunged 200 feet to the jagged rocks below and landed in a crumpled heap on its side.
ABC13 News reports the car’s air-bag control module showed that the driver did not take her foot off the gas or tap the brake as the car hit a wall and careened over the cliff.
Anastasia was pronounced dead at the scene. Alexandria was transported to a hospital in critical condition.
She was released from the hospital on Friday, and arrested at the Seaside Hotel the same day.
The prosecutor was concerned that she might flee the island to avoid prosecution.
“We had information after she was discharged from the hospital she attempted to fly out of the jurisdiction Wednesday night,” Higa said, adding that she made flight arrangements for Friday.
“All we know is she was trying to leave the state,” Higa said. “We were afraid she would try to leave the country as well.”
Alexandria, aka Alison, appeared in a courtroom with her arm in a sling. A judge ordered her held without bail.
“Alison did not try to harm herself or the person she most loved and was closest to in the world,” said her defense attorney, Todd Eddins.
It isn’t clear why or when the sisters changed their names.

Poor thing, arguing in a small space without doors to slam would drive me nuts. After driving 5 states with my sister, I thought of doing the same thing- but I have kids that would miss me. I just got out and gave her the car, she drove next to me for 2 miles while I screamed that I would never get back in the car with her. I got tired and gave in only if she promised not to say another word for the duration of the trip. Sibling arguments are real.

of the Hudson River, Angelika Graswald, his fiancée, had a run-in with
police detectives that would prove pivotal in the case, an investigator
testified on Tuesday at a pretrial hearing here.
On April 29, 2015, Ms. Graswald went to Bannerman Island, where the couple had kayaked earlier that month, to lay a wreath in his memory.
Investigators were there to look for any clues in what was still being
treated as an accidental drowning. The body of Mr. Viafore, 46, would
not be found until late May last year.
In his testimony, Aniello Moscato, a senior investigator with the New York State Police, said Ms. Graswald had called him that April morning. The two had been in touch daily during the search for the body.
When investigators saw Ms. Graswald on the island, she seemed ill at ease. “She was pacing back and forth, holding her stomach, deep breathing,” he said. “She more or less volunteered that there were problems with the relationship.”
At that point, Mr. Moscato said, he suggested that Ms. Graswald might be ore comfortable talking privately with Donald DeQuarto, the
investigator with whom she had been working most closely.
Shortly afterward, Mr. DeQuarto told Mr. Moscato that Ms. Graswald had admitted removing a plug from her fiancé’s kayak, a detail that prosecutors have seized on as evidence in their murder case against her.
“I said, ‘You’ve got to be kidding me; she told you that?’” Mr. Moscato
testified. “I was in shock.” He added that after Mr. Viafore vanished,
“she was being treated like a widow, a grieving widow.” The couple
shared an apartment in Poughkeepsie and had planned to be married on the beach in Latvia, where Ms. Graswald was born.
The pretrial hearing, known as a Huntley hearing, is an opportunity for the defense to challenge the way in which the police obtained their
evidence. Ms. Graswald’s lawyer, Richard A. Portale, has said he does
not want jurors to have access to an 11-hour police interrogation video,
arguing that incriminating remarks by his client were coerced.

Investigators have said she not only removed the plug of Mr. Viafore’s kayak but also tampered with his paddle, which she moved out of his reach as he struggled in the water. She was motivated, they say, by two insurance policies totaling $250,000 of which she was the beneficiary.
Mr. Moscato also testified that on the Friday after Mr. Viafore vanished, Ms. Graswald invited him to a nightclub, along with other search-and-rescue workers. “She wanted all the people assisting with the search to join her at the party,” he said.
When Mr. Moscato saw Ms. Graswald on April 29 on Bannerman Island, he and another investigator asked her to walk them through the places she had gone with Mr. Viafore in the hours before his kayak capsized. Mr. Portale has said the reason Mr. Viafore drowned is that he was not wearing a life jacket during their paddle through rough water back to shore.
“They were there enjoying their day and some intimate time together,” Mr. Moscato testified. “They brought a change of clothes and took some pictures in sexy poses in lingerie or whatever.”
Mr.Moscato also testified that Ms. Graswald, who had arrived in the United States as an au pair, was cagey about where she and Mr. Viafore had beached their kayaks on their visit.
After he heard that she had told Mr. DeQuarto about removing the kayak plug, Mr. Moscato said, he suggested that Ms. Graswald return with them on the police boat. (Kayaking experts have said that the absence of the tiny drain plug, located on top of the kayak, should not have caused it to sink.)
On the ride across the water, Mr. Moscato said, Ms. Graswald threw out a flower in memory of Mr. Viafore. She then proceeded to act “happy-go-lucky.”
“We were joking about the boat breaking down and if I fell into the water,”Mr. Moscato said. “She would save me if I’m not a good swimmer or whatever.” The police had detected that type of behavior in the days following Mr. Viafore’s drowning, when Ms. Graswald posted lighthearted photographs and videos to Facebook.
In the 11-hour interrogation that soon followed, Ms. Graswald told the police about her frustration with Mr. Viafore’s interest in pornography and sexual threesomes. At the end of the questioning, visibly frustrated, she said, “I wanted him dead and now he’s gone and I’m O.K. with it.”
Ms.Graswald has been in the Orange County Jail since her arrest on April 30 of last year. The hearing, which began on Monday, is to continue on Thursday. No trial date is scheduled.

Austria’s far-right Freedom party (FPÖ) will contest the outcome of last month’s presidential elections, it has announced.
In a knife-edge contest that divided the country and captured the
attention of the entire continent, the FPÖ candidate, Norbert Hofer,
lost to Green-endorsed Alexander Van der Bellen by 30,863 votes.
In the immediate aftermath of the election, Hofer had appealed to his
supporters to accept Van der Bellen as president. “We should all pull
together,” Hofer said at the time. “There are no signs of electoral
fraud.”
But at a press conference on Wednesday, the FPÖ leader, Heinz-Christian Strache, claimed that reports of irregularities in 94 voting districts “obliged” his party to contest the result.
“We are not bad losers, but this is about securing the foundations of
democracy,” Strache said. “You don’t have to be a conspiracy theorist
for these irregularities to give you a funny feeling.” The FPÖ has
handed in a 150-page complaint to Austria’s constitutional court that
details the alleged irregularities.
If the court investigates the alleged irregularities, it could lead to a
repeat of the vote in the affected regions. A ruling is expected before 8
July, the date that Van der Bellen is due to be sworn in as president.
The FPÖ leadership appears to have felt emboldened by the interior
ministry’s decision to investigate allegations of malpractice on behalf
of electoral commissions in six districts in Carinthia, Styria and Lower
Austria.
In some cases the interior ministry established that counting centres had begun to process postal votes on the eve of the election, rather than on the day after the election, as Austrian electoral law requires.
While postal votes did prove crucial in winning the election for Van der
Bellen, commentators point out that the economist would have edged ahead of his rightwing competitor even without the votes in the six voting
districts where irregularities are being investigated.
In order to proceed with the FPÖ’s complaint, the constitutional court
would first have to establish whether the alleged irregularities could
have proved crucial in determining the overall outcome.
The FPÖ has repeatedly called for the abolition of the postal vote in its
current form. “The postal vote we have is an error in the system, it
should have been abolished,” Strache said on Wednesday.

Wearable artificial kidney offers hope for dialysis patients
An experimental wearable artificial kidney shows promise as a substitute for dialysis machines, researchers report.
More than 2 million people worldwide with kidney failure require chronic dialysis. They must follow strict limitations as to what they eat and drink.
Longer, more frequent dialysis would offer better outcomes, but current dialysis machines aren’t portable. They limit patients’ freedom of movement and ability to engage in the normal activities of daily living.
“As a physician who cares for patients with kidney disease, it is my hope that in the future we have something better to offer than we do today for dialysis therapy,” Dr. Jonathan Himmelfarb from the University of Washington in Seattle told Reuters Health.
He would like to see “a treatment that can enhance quality of life,
allow for more autonomy and opportunity for full rehabilitation, and
possibly to extend life as well, compared to today’s available
therapeutic options.”
“We owe it to our patients to do everything we can to make this a reality,” Himmelfarb said by email.
He and his colleagues created a continuously operating wearable artificial kidney that was effective in earlier pilot studies where treatment was limited to 8 hours.
Now they report the results of a 24-hour test of the wearable artificial kidney in 11 patients with end-stage kidney disease who had been on dialysis for an average of 15 months.
Five patients completed the planned 24-hour treatment period, during which the device performed as expected.
There were challenges along the way, though. One patient had to stop treatment because of clotting of the blood circuit. In two patients, the machines needed new batteries before the end of the 24 hours. Three patients had to interrupt treatment to have gas bubbles removed from the blood circuit.
Because of a variety of device-related technical problems, the trial was stopped early, the authors reported in JCI Insight.
There were no serious complications, and all subjects were able to walk around freely while receiving artificial kidney treatment. The patients reported satisfaction with the few side effects,the convenience and flexibility of treatment, the discomfort associated with treatment, and the freedom allowed by the wearable artificial kidney.
The researchers say the technical problems will need to be addressed through device redesign and refinement before further long-term studies can be done.
“We would hope to be able to conduct a follow-up trial beginning sometime in the next several years,” Dr. Himmelfarb said. “It will be a number of years before such a treatment can be proven safe and effective, and be readily available to patients living with kidney disease.”
Dr. Karin Gerritsen and Dr. Jaap Joles from University Medical Center Utrecht in The Netherlands, who recently reviewed the current status of wearable kidney development, told Reuters Health by email, “Wearable and portable artificial kidneys are certainly on the horizon, but it will still take a few years before they become widely available.”
“The device may be a very good alternative for daily (nighttime) hemodialysis while operating in a bedside mode,” they said. “This would already be a great step forward compared to conventional in-(clinic) hemodialysis three times a week.”
