Reality TV star Keke Wyatt changes musical directions with her new single “Jodeci”, off her new CD, Rated Love Deluxe, on iTunes today (Oct. 21).
The R&B singer rocks a gold grill and urban streetwear in her new music video — a noticeable departure from her usual ultra femme lipstick glam look.
The 34-year-old Atlanta resident says she got the inspiration for her new musical sound from her husband of 6 years, Michael Ford.
“Everything on this album that I wrote is literally what I go through with my husband, Michael Jamar Ford,” Keke says. “All the things I want and expect from him. Musically, people want to keep me in a box with [R&B singer] Avant. I love him like a brother and we do have a great sound together; but that’s not my sound, that’s just how people first heard me. My sound is like a big ol’ pot of gumbo.”
Wyatt said being biracial exposed her to a wider variety of music genres growing up.
“I’m biracial so I grew up around all kinds of music. With my mother’s family, one part was gospel country and another part was hillbilly country. On my daddy’s side, it was down home gospel. All of that is in me, but I’m taking baby steps. I know I can’t go from being one thing people have been hearing then turn around with something completely different. ‘Lie Under You’ from the EP is more what I love to do.”
One of the songs off her new project, “No Peace” touches on the quarrels between spouses that usually ends in divorce for less mature couples.
“A relationship can be a roller coaster,” Keke explains.
“At home, sometimes it feels like war, but it’s a war of peace. I’d rather be in a war with you than to not have you. That’s how I love my spouse… It’s so stupid when you love a person so much that you take stuff off of them you wouldn’t take from anyone else. When I get mad and tell you to leave, that doesn’t mean leave! That means, ‘Come and hold me closer. Even if I push you away, don’t let me go.’ That’s just how females are.”

I was exposed to country music growing up. That has nothing to do with race, but rather a person’s roots. My grandparents were both born and raised in the South. They picked me up from school after my grandfather retired. They listened to a country station that is now defunct out here.
I just saw Randy Travis on Inside Edition two days ago. It was heartbreaking to see his decline after a stroke. He was one of the, if not the first country artist whose music enabled me to appreciate country music.
Despite my mom listening to soul and R&B, I listened to rock, metal, new wave – everything but what she listened to. I didn’t start liking R&B until the 90’s.

Very small portions. EVERYDAY. I boil 10 eggs. I bake 5 chicken breast, topped with the peppers onions mushrooms in their own foil packets. Depending on the veggies, those are boiling while the other stuff is baking. Then I make a pan of the shrimp zucchini (it only takes 8 minutes in the oven). I clean as I go. Eazy peazy.

I’ve seen Mick Jagger cite blues musician Solomon Burke as being one of Jagger’s greatest influences. That same Jagger was referred to as “n*gger lips” growing up. Look at Amy Winehouse’s influences. Sarah Vaughn was one of her favorites.
