Twitter users dragged MSNBC host Rachel Maddow unmercifully on Tuesday night, after she tweeted she had copies of President Donald Trump’s tax returns.
Maddow’s tweet turned out to be half true. She didn’t have any of Trump’s recent tax returns. Her guest, financial analyst and blogger David Cay Johnston, brought Trump’s 2005 tax returns with him.
BREAKING: We've got Trump tax returns. Tonight, 9pm ET. MSNBC.
(Seriously).

In a brilliant chess move, Trump beat Maddow to the punch by releasing his own tax returns ahead of Maddow’s show on Tuesday night. He also may have set up Maddow — and MSNBC — by mailing the tax returns to Johnston.
“Donald has a long history of leaking material about himself when he thinks it’s in his interest,” Johnston said. “With Donald, you never know.”
One of former presidential candidate Hillary Clinton’s key campaign lies was that Trump did not pay any taxes — an accusation that was gleefully repeated by the leftwing media.
But the tax returns revealed that Trump paid $38 million in federal income taxes on a reported income of $150 million in 2005.
That puts him in the 25 percent tax bracket — higher than former President Barack Obama (19%), MSNBC (24%) and Bernie Sanders (13%).
Maddow’s world exclusive turned out to be a spectacular failure and proved embarrassing for her bosses at MSNBC.
If Maddow had done her homework, she would have known that The Washington Post reported on the very same 2005 tax returns last year.
Even MSNBC rival CNN clowned Maddow.
Political contributor Van Jones said:
“If all we get tonight is that Donald Trump paid 38 million dollars to America’s government, that’s a good night for Donald Trump! I’m sorry. I was hoping and praying that it would show, not only that he paid no taxes, he actually charged the government and got money back! I wanted something I could get excited about.”
CNN host Anderson Cooper added, “What you wanted was that he was paid in (Russian) rubles. That’s what you were hoping for.”
Maddow’s Epic flop is being compared to Geraldo Rivera’s 2-hour live special on Al Capone’s empty vault in 1986.
Reaction from the White House was swift and accused Maddow of breaking the law.
“You know you are desperate for ratings when you are willing to violate the law to push a story about two pages of tax returns from over a decade ago,” a White House official gloated in a statement Tuesday night.
Trump’s son, Donald Trump, Jr., thanked Maddow for proving his father is not a tax cheat.
Thank you Rachel Maddow for proving to your #Trump hating followers how successful @realDonaldTrump is & that he paid $40mm in taxes! #Taxes

Maddow and Fox News host Shepard Smith, who are both openly gay, are among the snowflake journalists who use their significant platforms to bash Trump on a daily basis.
