French designer Christian Louboutin says he’s down to meet Bronx rapper Cardi B, who referenced his coveted red bottom pumps in her #1 rap song, “Bodak Yellow”.
Louboutin, 54, said he would be totally up for meeting the one-hit-wonder who journeyed from the strip club to Instagram to reality television and eventual success in the music industry.
In the opening line of “Bodak Yellow”, Cardi raps about her affinity for Louboutins:
- These expensive, these is red bottoms,
These is bloody shoes
Hit the store, I can get ’em both,
I don’t wanna choose
Christian was asked what he thought about Cardi’s red bottoms reference during a recent interview with the New York Times.
Asked if he knew Cardi B personally, Christian replied: “She has the hair like that? (describing her hair weave). She’s a rapper? This Yellow song?”
Christian said a friend played the song for him recently and he has also seen the music video. “I don’t know much more than that, to be honest,” he said.
“My job is creating beautiful shoes. The rest has become what it become.”
Christian said he would definitely be interested in meeting Cardi if she ever wanted to, replying “why not?”
He said Cardi’s reference to his shoes was symbolic of his roots: “in a way, it comes back to some of my origins”.
“The first shoes I ever designed were for showgirls, people on stage. Showgirls have a kind of attitude – they’re driving forces,” he smiled.
Cardi first received a pair of Louboutins on her 19th birthday, when an admirer at the strip club she worked in gave her some as a gift.
She has 90 pairs in her closet, and she tops off her growing collection every 2 weeks.
Some hip-hop fans note that “Bodak Yellow”‘s reference to red bottoms is a nod to the Bloods street gang.
But in an interview with Billboard.com, Cardi’s stylist Kollin Carter recently revealed the shoes are a symbol of status in Cardi’s Bronx neighborhood.
“Before ‘Bodak’ blew up, she wore red bottoms because that’s what it means to make it in the Bronx. It’s a status symbol that the masses can relate to; everyday girls work hard and save up their money to have that shoe. Cardi did the same.”
