Indianapolis Colts linebacker Edwin Jackson was one of 2 men killed by a drunk driver on Sunday morning on the shoulder of an Indianapolis highway. Jackson reportedly asked Monroe to pull over onto the shoulder on Interstate 70 because he was getting sick. Both men were hit and killed when Monroe got out of the car to assist Jackson.
Deadspin.com reports that Jackson, 26, and his driver Jeffrey Monroe were killed when Manuel Orrego-Savala lost control of his car and veered off the road, killing Jackson who was standing on the shoulder.
Orrego-Savala, a 37-year-old illegal immigrant from Guatemala, attempted to flee the scene on foot. He was arrested and charged with suspicion of driving under the influence and operating a vehicle without a valid driver’s license.
The Colts issued a statement on Monday, which reads in part:
“We were heartbroken to hear the news of Edwin Jackson’s passing. Edwin was loved by all in the Colts organization. We admired his outgoing personality, competitive spirit and hard-working mentality… We are shocked and saddened by this tragedy, and our thoughts and prayers are with the families of both men during this difficult time.”
