The Georgia Senate approved a bill on Friday that allows adoption agencies to deny adoptions by gay or transgender people. Senate Bill 375 allows agencies to turn down gays if the adoption violated their religion.
The controversial “religious liberty” bill was approved by a 35-19 vote. The bill now goes to the Georgia House where it faces an uphill battle.
According to MyAJC.com, lawmakers are concerned that passing the measure in the Georgia House of Representatives might hurt the state’s chances to be the site of Amazon’s second headquarters.
If Amazon selects Georgia to build the new headquarters, it could mean a boost to the economy and provide jobs to thousands of people.
Discrimination based on sexual preference is not illegal in Georgia. Sexual preferences is also not considered a civil right in Georgia.
Two years ago, Gov. Nathan Deal vetoed a similar religious liberty legislation, saying it didn’t reflect Georgia’s image as a welcoming state with “warm, friendly and loving people.”
