Jatwan Craig Cuffie, 16, has been charged with first-degree murder in the fatal shooting of a ninth grader at Butler High School in North Carolina.
Cuffie, a ninth grader at the school, shot and killed Bobby McKeithen, 16, in a hallway after 7 a.m. on Monday.
McKeithen was pronounced dead at the Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte.
Clayton Wilcox, the Charlotte-Mecklenberg Schools superintendent, said a fight preceded the shooting.
“We have literally dozens if not hundreds of kids who were in the hallway when this fight took place who witnesses one of their own be shot and fall to the floor before they ran away in panic, Wilcox

I’m not with home-schooling because I feel children should learn to socialize with their peers in the learning environment but is it time to start home-schoooling? Things that make you go ‘hmmmmm????’
Sad when bullying leads to death…. either through suicide or through murder. Joking each other is a part of growing up, but it should NEVER be just one sided and relentless.
I will work 16 jobs if I have too to keep my kids out of Public School especially in the city of Philadelphia.
With all of the racist and rapist teachers I would consider homeschooling if I had children and could afford it.
It’s the Amerikkkan way.
Adults don’t find bullying a problem as long as it’s their child doing the bullying. Then it ends like this and they want all the sympathy and support, that the bullied child should have received. I’m starting not to give AF about bullies dying. Cold truth.

Private school is not the absolute solution to bullying. In fact, some states dont even require private schools to even report bullying. So it happens, but nobody even has an idea on what scale, bc its not reported. But to each.
In 15 degrees of sep., comes to find out one of my own HS classmates is staff at that school. Praying for him and his students. Touched me deeply.
Sad
16 and in the 9th grade? anybody see something wrong with that or is it just me. This is sad and just I dont even know what to say to things like this anymore
I agree with you!
I feel for everyone involved. The 14 year old that felt this was his only option and has thrown his entire life away, and his family that will mourn the loss of his potential. The 16 year old that lost his life, and his family that probably never thought in a million years that when he left home this morning to go to school that would be the last time they would see him alive. I feel for the kids who witnessed this so up close and personal and the long term effects. As parents, you want to protect your child from any of that. The sad reality is that so very little of what happens is within our control. Wow. Just. Wow.
People are people anywhere.
first thing i noticed
True! But, there’s no record of a shooting or mass shootings in private schools (I don’t know of any). My son is in private school and yes there is bullying, but when you pay tuition, you have a lot more control on school policy. Also, when a situation arises, bullying, etc… The school is all over it from my experience.
I pulled my 12 year old out of school because of bullying and bare minimum job the teachers were doing. Also what worried me was the school shooting drills they would have every few months…It didn’t sit right with me. I homeschooled for a year and it was great. I pay for online private school now and she loves it and is waaaay ahead of our states 7th grade curriculum.
the 14yr old is the one that died…..the 16yr old is the shooter……tragic either way
There is close to 400 million firearms owned by civilians in America.
I’m scratching my head… like that doesn’t make sense
Thank you. People don’t realize that one single act of violence just resonates beyond the shooter and the victim. This world right now is breaking my heart.
Bullying at my kids school is automatic grounds for expulsion. And they take a class on personal space every semester from kindergarten to 12th grade.
He could have started school at 7 if he missed the cutoff date which would make him the correct age (if his birthday was between August and yesterday).
These kids today don’t know how to control their emotions. I am wondering what the fight was about (probably something trivial). I am also curious to know what his home life was like (was the father there? was he raised by his mom and several aunties/sisters?) I’m starting to think Sandra is right about these overly emotional boys/men, who were raised primarily by women.
who starts school at 7?? Kindergarten starts at age 5. Me thinks he was held back once or twice.
i agree private school kids are cut from the same, if not worse (seemingly no home training), cloth but they can and will be dealt with waaayyy more expediently. my child’s school has already tightened up their procedures this year so that there is an orderly and systematic paper trail from acting up to suspension to expulsion…and this is at the elementary level.
Fix it. ?
Yes, especially, due to social media, where a lot of bullying occurs and escalates, then physical contact often lead to fights and fatalities!
They were both 16.
My goodness what are they drinking out
there to make them so nutty!!
It sue is a sad thing.
Love, love love this post.
I remember when fist fighting in the hall was a big thing. Now kids are bringing guns.
16 in the ninth grade?
I agree. There is a lot of sensitivity and over emotional reactions to perceived slights. But that’s grown folk too. People in general are high on reacting and low on turning the other cheek. I tell my daughter all the time – what others think about you is not your business. Maya Angelou was a wise wise woman.
I agree!
I question the age too. Perhaps a late bd?
It can be a viable option! I did it for a few years, but not because of bullying.
You just add-on extra-curricular activities like art, music, boys or girls scouts, sports, 5k runs, volunteerism, etc. for socialization.
Join Home School Associations and support groups, online communities. You’re right, it’s not for every family!
Mr. Jones (FRIDAY Movie):
OH NO, son. That’s not the way it is. You kids have been nothin’ but punks. Sissified. So quick to pick up a gun. Too scared to take an ass-whipping.
[holds up his fists]
THIS is what makes you a man. When I was growing up, THIS was all the protection we needed. You win some, you lose some, but you live. You live to fight another day. Now you think you’re a man with that gun in your hand, don’t you?!?
After teaching high school for seven years, I feel that repeat ninth graders should go to a different school to get support. There were lots of kids that were a grade or two behind but they could blend in with everyone else, so they were never motivated to get their act together until everyone in their original class was about to graduate. By then it was as too late.
They also would corrupt the younger kids because they were 16 in class with True Freshmen. AND if they were behind, they usually didn’t represent the best students.
My point In saying this is…it is more common than you think. Anddddd it is very easy for no one else to even realize they are that far behind so they have no shame.
There are many situations where the children see an Adult Bully in their family/circle and think it’s ok to terrorize others
Nobody puts that adult bully in check..
Not everybody can or should homeschool. Yet I’ve been in high school classrooms where it was like a ZOO! Straight outta the movies/tv. I couldn’t believe the kids were wilding out like that!
The kids who were there to learn really couldn’t.
Agreed! Homeschooling does not mean you lock your kids away from society. Like you said, there are several ways for kids to grow and socialize without attending traditional schools.
These teachers are looking at school like it’s an opportunity to find a date!!
Lololol this is sad and true.
Kids killing kids. Now he’ll spend at least twenty years in jail and won’t even remember what they were beefing about…
“People in general are high on reacting and low on turning the other cheek. ”
Believe That! Everybody seems tight & ready to fight.
RIP….maannnnn….this is too much……why man?? why???
10th grade Principal: “Boys & girls, raise your hand if you haven’t had a date with the teacher.”
BEstfriend’s brother went to private school and was having orgies in the tenth grade. Worked at a Private school and they did REAL drugs, not just weed. Not saying private is bad but I am saying, don’t think everything is sweet in private. It’s just a different set of problems that other kids parents can buy their way out of and different type of bullying.
I read earlier that it had something to do with bullying – “The conflict began with bullying and escalated out of control,” Wilcox said. “As fear took over, the young person brought a gun to solve the problems.”
I read it twice to make sure I wasn’t reading it wrong.
Perhaps he has some learning problems too and should be in a specialized program. Not everyone works well in a mainstreamed environment. Teachers are supposed to give them what they need, but with 30+ in a classroom, it’s tough.
He will NEVER forget.
I think this is a game changer…
he will be in prison with hardened criminals!
Unfortunately he will likely be acquired as someone’s girlfriend.
The original bully situation will be SMALL in comparison.
Kids act on their feelings. I wish he had played this different.
Never any starting school at 7. I have heard 5 turning 6 but never 7 def agree Klove
A 16 year old in the 9th grade is not so unusual, unfortunately. My sister is an AP in a public school and there are some students in elementary school that should be in high school…
Your are so right.
So sad and unnecessary.
THIS. Our elite, pricey, private schools are a HOT MESS still to this day. Back when, at my HS job at Chick Fil A, this mayo girl. She was hunchin the shift lead (a teen as well, but he was in college) each and every shift, in the office and the stock room. Fast forward to today…one of my old colleagues at the paper, lost her son, a private school educated lad to the “opioid epidemic that is sweeping America and ruining SO MANY LIVES” <<< sarcastic. She used to leave work at LEAST 2-3 times a week when he was younger at the SAME private school (its K-12) to go up to the school bc he WAS the bully. Fighting. Stealing. or my personal fave, had attacked a teacher. All that glitter isnt always gold.
No, their parents are so supposed to give them what they need.
16 years old and in the 9th grade? I wonder where his parents are. They should be brought up on charges for child neglect.
Guns make me uncomfortable
RIP
Exactly he was scared to fight him so just think about it he is going to have to fight a whole lot of guys in prison
I agree with you!! I know a couple who debated homeschooling and I was scratching m head and praying for their daughter at the samn damn time. Really nice good people and great parents but ummm scholastics???? Mmph.
It is so sad a tragic loss for both young men when my son was younger when someone hit him I said you better hit him back thank God they settled their differences with their fist because now it is so different kids are so quick to pick up a gun
say what nah? no way should they combine elementary and high school kids, for any reason, due to a variety of mental and physical developmental factors. but, for instance, everybody in my child’s class is a year older because the parents either started them later on purpose or their school wouldn’t let them in because of the random cut off of september 1. so it’s usually 14- (early birthday) or 15-year old (late birthday) freshman but it only takes getting kept back once to be a 16 year old freshman.

You would think these kids think this sh*t is a damn video game! If you shoot somebody dead they will not regenerate! They are just gone, and your life is over too! This sh*t is absolutely sickening.
yes, the difference is the access to the weapon. he could have used a knife though and we’ve seen that also. i ask my child every day, what happened today? i hear all kind of ish about lil elementary classroom shenanigans lol but i provide counsel to my child. also, let us not forget our own fights–on the play yard, in the class, in somebody back yard, on the street, etc. so we know that kids WILL fight but these kids today cannot handle a loss like we had to do back in the day.
they also don’t seem to be aware that they are throwing their own lives away. it’s virtually suicide.
How did he get pass the metal detectors? The HS in Chicago on the south side have metal detectors.
He’s probably “slow” or reluctant to do the hard work to get ahead.
All schools do not have them. I live in Maryland and the high school here do NOT have them. Guns are not a big issue but knives are. Don’t know why they don’t. It’s to protect our babies.
Okkkk…I just made the scooby doo sound reading that. Stuff like that put older kids with the younger ones and bullying becomes a problem.
Right…the most you have to worry about was being jumped. SMH…
“supposed” being the key word. the school system is the teacher, psychologist, counselor, mentor, chef, and now has to be TSA/police? some kids are better off at school than home. many people are now saying this was some ongoing beef and not a bullying situation.
But both of them are 16 in the 9th grade
but hopefully, in the hood, there was that one adult around “supervising” who was like “one at a time, one at a time lolol”
with a name like that “Jatwan” what else could he possibly be…joking…rip to bobby…now his young as will be trial as an adult and spen 25 years in prison ole pawssy azz lil boy
lol
Most teens act off emotions not realizing that once it’s done it can’t be taken back. Guns are too available to them. Growing up I NEVER had access to a gun. There wasn’t one in my home (that I knew of) and my friends didn’t have them. Brass knuckles were about the worst it gets. Times have really changed.
they’re bringing knives too. the worse we had was nickle bags, padlocks and nunchucks if it was a planned fight. everybody survived.
I was thinking this, but I didnt want to say anything. Im starting to think that certain names may predispose you for a life of crime, even though there are no studies that prove this LOL
smh … R.I.P young man.. we have enough to deal with, with yt folk killing us.
CANNOT HANDLE A LOSS!!!! feelings are super fragile these days
16 years old, life over !!! smh
lol yep either i life of crime or a wannbe rapper that never made it
even as an adult would you like being beat up in front of hundreds of people or even a few people for that matter ? especially in front of children that have no chill or maturity … I think not … no one at any age likes that … we don’t know the back story of this fight or if someone was being bullied ( and at no point am I trying to say anyone deserves to die for being a bully ) … both of these young men lost their lives and what I’m pretty sure of is its because of foolishness …and also there is nothing good about fighting either …whats good about punching scratching and pulling hair or biting … its ALL savage behavior … just because someone may win a fight its doesn’t make them right in a disagreement … if you don’t like someone stay out of their way and leave them alone
“N&&as busting shots like they lost they minds like 25 to life never crossed they minds” Tupac — Troublesome
Two more “black” boys lost to the system. RIP Bobby
we have to stop this children will be children mentality and begin to demand to know what is going on with them … be involved in your child … some parents know they have demon children and send them out in the world to terrorize other kids … not sure of this back story but children can be evil and at 16 they are not exactly kids they are young adults … they are having sex drinking taking drugs and doing all kinds of things at this age and we have to tell ourselves the TRUTH about whats going on with them … this is a very unfortunate trajedy one boy is dead and another has lost his life in other ways and I do NOT want to hear any crying parent saying Oh my boy was a good boy … we have to start telling the truth so these things can be addressed and handled before others are killed … I am convinced that sick adults come from dysfunctional childhoods mostly and others are simply born that way but studies have shown that more are created than natural …its also not taken seriously until something tragic happens and then THEY are blamed but not HOW they grew up …
I respectfully disagree. In terms of sheer murder volume, “yt folk killing us” ain’t the major problem. Good friend recently buried his son. Wasn’t killed by a yt man.
Dam Demons!
sorry for your loss .. i’m talking about black on black crime tho.
Understood. Thx.
Alla this stems from bullying. R.I.P young man
I hate this happened. I was bullied in school, and bullying is never ok. Teach your kids to LEAVE PEOPLE ALONE.
Look at his angry lil face
Why are yall little bastrds so dam angry? Why arent their fathers teaching them that violence isnt the answer? What a shame.
So true… At one point I worked for a tutoring company and had to go into different schools to talk up their program. I was shocked at the grown men still in high school — beards, mustaches, muscles, wife beaters… Maybe they were from other countries and got a late start but damn!
Nuthing you can tell teenagers until they learn to control that anger and that doesn’t seem to happen until they reach adulthood. Such a shame…
One thing kids need to do is stop bullying others until they snap. This isn’t the first story we’ve heard where death is the end result…
I’m still trying to understand how you 16 in the ninth grade. I was 13. Either way this is crazy. R.I.P
Exactly!!!!!!!!!!! It’s “mental illness” for “others”.
And all these parents need to figure out IF THEIR CHILD IS A BULLY. smh. All these kids getting picked on, hell SOMEBODY’S kid is doing the picking smh.
You’re assuming they have present fathers. A lot of kids are raising themselves! You’d be horrified at the way some of these kids live and the stuff they’ve had to endure.
Exactly! And not just to leave people alone, but to STAND UP for other kids who get bullied. “Evil flouishes when good men do nothing.”
My brother…genius, but can’t Teach to save his life. Too impatient!
You were 13 in 9th grade? I was 15.
I need more details because if this young man was being threatened, beat or tortured, this could be self-defense. I bet they drop this story and he’s charged as a juvenile. Something that kid was doing made this boy fear for his life.
Ikr!
LOL
I agree. In high school, I had more guts to stand up for others than myself. I guess it’s because I knew how it felt to be constantly humiliated. Glad my story didn’t end like this…came close, but a teacher intervened moments before action. Forever grateful for him.
Maybe if he had help it wouldn’t have come to this. People love to ignore until stuff hits the fan.
Shut up.
Good for you!
Perhaps the story of what happened will come out!
We don’t know if the parents knew anything.
I agree about if this young man received help…before he pulled the gun out.
So sad….
I can’t believe that they let school resume, after the incident happened. I guess they are used to violence and crime in that specific area of the state.
SAME exact thing I said. I was too. But remember, they made it so you have to be 5 to enter Kindergarten now so that makes this about right. I was in kindergarten at 3.
I heard it was a bully situation. Victim got fed up, and this is the end result. I try to tell these “leaders” and kids around here that bully will take you to your grave or the unemployment line. If someone tells me that they are being bullied or I witness bullying, I leave no policy or stone unturned. No one will be harmed on my watch due to my inactivity.
How did he get the gun….
Kids and guns don’t mix. Also….you failed twice….wait…you failed 3 times…..now go do the time.
This kids looks weird!
they did not want to say it but its clear who was bullied… smh tell a kid theses days to defend themselves and they use a gun
Yes! “start telling the truth” which most parents will not do.
Kids that are bullied are starting to retaliate. smh. This will continue to happen as parents and schools continue to turn a blind eye.
That is SOOOOOO true. Adults think it’s funny and pretend they don’t know where the child got that ignorant behavior from.
While all the time, they know where it comes from. Grandmomma is a bully. Uncle Charles is a bully. The man down the street is a bully.
Children copy what they See!
