MGM’s Creed II, the much-hyped sequel to Creed (2015), came in second to animated film Ralph Breaks the Internet, which grossed $3.8 million in Thanksgiving preview showings on Tuesday.
‘Ralph’, the critically acclaimed sequel to 2012’s animated film ‘Wreck-It Ralph’, is expected to gross up to $75 million over the Tuesday-to-Sunday Thanksgiving corridor.
Creed II, starring Michael B. Jordan, Tessa Thompson and Sylvester Stallone, took in an impressive $3.7 million in Tuesday previews — more than double the $1.5 million that Creed rang up at the box office in 2015 Thanksgiving previews.
MGM poured millions of dollars into marketing Creed II, which is expected to outperform Creed‘s box office sales.
In Creed II, Adonis Creed (Jordan) takes on Viktor Drago in a big money match. Adonis never met his dad, former boxing champ Apollo Creed. Adonis was born after Apollo was beaten to death in Rocky IV (1985) by Viktor’s dad, Russian boxer Ivan Drago (Dolph Lundgren).
Stallone reprises his role as former heavyweight champ Rocky Balboa, who trains Adonis and helps him overcome his inadequacies that stem from the lack of a father-son bond in his childhood.
