For 24 years, the metro PCS store at the corner of 7th Street and Florida Avenue in Washington D.C.’s Shaw neighborhood has played go-go music through outdoor speakers with no complaints.
But the area has slowly gentrified with wealthy investors pricing the low-income residents out of their homes. Now the area is an upscale neighborhood of high income hipsters, corporate executives and soccer moms.
In April, metro PCS’s parent company T-Mobile sent a memo to the store ordering them to shut off the outdoor speakers after someone moved into a new luxury apartment building across the street and threatened to sue.
The hashtag #DontMuteDC soon popped up on Twitter.com, and more than 50,000 people signed a petition asking T-Mobile to turn the music back on.
D.C. councilwoman Brianne Badeau sent a letter to T-Mobile explaining the history of go-go music and encouraging the company to change its decision.
“Go-go is a blend of funk, hip-hop, Latin, and other genres that emerged in the ’60s and ’70s. It is a unique product of D.C. and its black residents,” she wrote. “This corner is often where many hear go-go for the first time. The music that has played there since at least 1995 – and the CDs sold next door – have kept this cultural spirit alive.”
Since last month, thousands of protesters have assembled at the corner of 7th and Florida Avenues to protest the decision until the music is turned back on.
The rallies include go-go music with live bands and a DJ spinning popular go-go hits by Wale (“Pretty Girls”) and E.U. (“Da Butt”).
Councilman Robert White and other D.C activists hope to reach a compromise with T-Mobile.
“When you move to a neighborhood, you’ve got to appreciate the culture of that neighborhood, the sound of that neighborhood. It is not OK to jump into a neighborhood and then seek to change it,” said White.

The issue here is Go-Go is part of DC culture and people want to be able to keep their traditions. Moving into a neighborhood and changing some things like adding more stores is good. Beefing up security and fixing things up, good. But changing a deeply entrenched, positive, uplifting aspect of the culture, not good.
By the block and stop buying weave and Jordan shoes, stop getting into too much student loans because most job or career won’t pay it off in quick time ( businesses administration degree) with a student loan of $150-250k only making $10/14hrs. How you going to buy the block or buy old homes and restore them. Black people need to start ”Strategic”.

It may not be good in the minds of those who like it, but if the residents that are moving in don’t want it no more, then it needs to go where it is wanted. The residents moving in and buying/renting are essentially paying taxes to the city and they city has laws and ordinances. Just because this particular corner was allowed to break those laws/ordinances for years because the residents then didn’t mind it and law enforcement turned a blind eye, don’t mean that it is going to be acceptable now that the new residents want them enforced.
As a Washingtonian we know this and folk are fed up.

Noise ordinances area a real thing. I would put money down that this is breaking local noise ordinances. You have got to apply for a legal permit to do that and it is up to the local jurisdiction as to whether or not you are granted that.

I get that point but when you move into a neighborhood you have to accept it AS IS versus assuming you can move in and change it. What if it doesn’t? It’s not the fault of the residents who were already there and created that environment, it’s the fault of the person who know it was going on and moved there anyway. If I don’t like loud music and am considering moving where that goes on, I would find somewhere else to move.

I’m not disagreeing in theory with you, but in legal practical terms, it is not the responsibility of the new investors and residents to accept what I would bet you is law breaking. Just because this corner has been permitted to break local noise ordinances for 24 years doesn’t mean that it is entitled to do so going forward. It was allowed to break them for so long because the residents AT THAT TIME did not mind it and the police turned a blind eye. Now things are changing and, legally, the new residents are not in the wrong. They seem to want those legal ordinances enforced by the city that they pay taxes to.
I knew of a family that moved to what was an industrial part of town along with other new residents over about ten years. The local factories were breaking laws by continuing to work beyond what local ordinances allowed, making noise and all that. They’d been doing so for decades with no issue and they got used to that as if it were legal. But it wasn’t because people were moving into what was a technical residential area right next to where the factories were. The new residents had the noise ordinances enforced because they were legally zoned for and recognized as a residential community.
This is what has happened in cities for centuries.

To be clear, you suggest that black people stop attending colleges and incurring debt and instead take the money they would use to purchase sneakers and weave, to purchase homes and renovate them. This is your solution to the wealth gap? There are a few books, articles, studies you should read that may dispel these ideas. As an FYI, blacks save as much (and in many cases more) than their counterparts. Don’t believe everything you see on tv.

Since this post is about the city of DC, race is a major factor. It was once called The Chocolate City, now it can no longer be called this. However, I do agree knowledge is universal, but I am always rooting for my Black people to not go through things like this.
That true. Alot of the areas that are being gentrified are full of rental properties anyway. If the landlord is a Chinese investor he doesn’t care about keeping the neighborhood culturally diverse. He may not have ever been to the neighborhood. He just purchased the building or property at an auction. The lots of land in my neighborhood are owned by Chinese nationals. They are just sitting on the empty land waiting for the value to increase.
Let me give you another scenario, say you owned your home, purchased your home for like 80’k in the 80’s. You kept up your home but since 2000 the value of your home has increased exponentially over the past almost two decades as well as the property taxes but your salary has not increased exponentially. You are not old enough to qualify for senior property tax assistance but you cannot afford the taxes at the current assessed value.
Then what?
A business administration degree is not $150-250k unless you a dummy and you got fooled.

All towns, cities, etc. have noise ordinances and if the music has been turned off due to impending legal action, then violation of the local noise ordinance is the legal standing the lawsuit is based on.

Fact 1: Thanks to government enforced segregation, housing discrimination, and redlining black people were forced to live in areas that were considered undesirable. This includes working and middle class families.
Fact 2: Despite paying taxes these areas are intentionally and systematically neglected by city and state governments. The roads are in poor conditions, waste is not picked up regularly, etc.
Fact 3: Black home ownership has a lower value than white ownership. On average black home ownership is 18% less than whites. This means that the same exact house can be built on the same street and the value of the house is determined solely by the RACE of the occupant. Thus, when a single white person moves into a neighborhood this could increase the property tax to an amount that the current blacks are not able to afford. How is this the black homeowners fault?

Buts it not just black communities.
They rural areas are disapearing too. Land has always been valuable. Just look at the Greater Atlanta metro. Small rural areas in NC are being transformed like Apex and Knightdale. Population booms change things.
They bought those homes, in that neighborhood, with full knowledge that the music played during the day. They made an informed decision to move there anyway.
That is privileged entitlement at it’s finest. What makes the new home owners more important than the people who have lived in that neighborhood for years, who don’t mind and may even enjoy that music?
Would I, personally, want to have to hear that music on my day off? No. But if you want to live in a quiet neighborhood you need to move to a quiet neighborhood.

How do you build wealth? Wealth has been handed to white folks for generations which in turn allows them to pass said wealth down to their families. The opposite is true for blacks. We have been stripped of wealth and have been forced to pass ob debt.
History is how you build wealth. It doesn’t happen in 2019. It happened in the 1930’s (The New Deal) when whites were given land, housing, and grants to purchase land and housing. When they were given loans to start businesses. When they were given money to attend colleges. When their high schools and colleges were funded. When black farm workers and maids were excluded from receiving benefits.
Wealth is HISTORICAL. We are forced to operate within a system of white supremacy. In order to get a job, you have to be hired. You have to be qualified. Qualifications usually require education. Education requires access and opportunity. In order to purchase a home you have to get a loan. The location of your home is dependent on access.
Yes, you may be able to be successful (to some extent) on an individual basis, but collectively the system is set up in 2019 to exclude us. Period.

Yea I was forced out. Courts agreed to let me stay until I find another place. Half of my old bldg was forced out. White people moved all up and through Harlem. We also was notified late when it came to town halls etc. NY went from #39 on the most expensive list to number 7 this year. I know that house is being assessed at every bit of 700k now because it had already been gutted and remodeled when she bought it. God bless my mom’s soul.
I can see that happening. I’m less than 10minutes by train to downtown. I really enjoy the short commute. Thanks to gentrification, I have everything I need within a mile radius. I also don’t have children though. The public school system sucks so I would probably make a mad dash for the burbs if I had kids.

Where I live in SW Atlanta, wealthy Blacks have lived in the neighborhoods since the early 70s but have not maintained the properties over the years. Overgrown landscaping, little or no interior and exterior upgrades and/or maintenance yet there’s plenty of luxury vehicles in the driveways, large churches and folks sharp as a tack at the Kroger and Publix.
Several of the homes still have the original 1950s kitchens and bathrooms (including the old stained, rusted fixtures). I don’t understand why more of us don’t invest in the maintenance and updating of our homes.

I have mixed feelings about this. I remember walking by that store and hearing music blasting for years, but it wasn’t really a residential area at that time. I have recently visited to see that the surrounding area has completely changed. With that said… Who really would want music blasting loud all the time where you live… what ever the music is??? If you truly want to prevent/resolve gentrification, the short answer is yes (assuming that the black person’s offering is within market value).
But when the white folks move in, take over the neighborhood for some reason the property values increase. Streets with portholes miraculously get fixed, nicer stores/restaurants open up. I’ve seen it happen.
Remember that woman (BBQ Bettie) who called the police on the black family who was BBQ’g at Lake Merritt in Oakland, Cali. That very lake use to have a Juneteenth Festival, no more. They use to have other ethnic festivals, no more. That area became gentrified and all you see now are volleyball nets and white boys on skateboards. They venture to the East side of Oakland to buy their drugs though. In that area now, some are paying $2,000 for a 1 bedroom and if you are in a high rise with a view of the San Francisco Bay it can go much higher.

Yes, blacks are poorer, have less income, and have less savings (actual amount of money). However, blacks save more (% not $) than whites. Our savings income ratio is higher. This means, that although we make less we put more of our income in our savings. However, we still have less money put away in savings because we make less. As an example, if I make $30K a year and I put 20% of my income in my savings annually, that’s $6,000. If you make $90K and you only put 10% in your savings ($9,000), you will still have MORE savings than me, but you’re savings ratio (savings to income) is LESS than mine. Does that make sense? More to the point, you are more likely to have a diversified portfolio (stocks, etc.). Which means that your $9K is actually going to end up being $20K a year. Get it?

Well I am sorry to DISAPPOINT so many of you but I have been an URBAN PIONEER in DC and the BENIFICARY of GENTRIFICATION.
I bought a house in Columbia Heights in the early 80’s when the Mayor and DC had a serious relationship with CRACK. In the beginning ALL of my neighbors were BLACK. But, LIFE HAPPENS and suddenly they were almost all WHITE. Mayor Barry designated large swatches of the community as an enterprise zone so decades later the housing values SKYROCKETED. After fighting over the house for months with my ex-husband I let go when my son didn’t want to live there anymore.
I now live in Brookland another desirable neighborhood with increasing enterprise zones, walking communities and SKYROCKETING values where the neighborhood is going from BLACK to WHITE. I receive constant OFFERS. Is it FAIR to my CHILDREN to sell my HOUSE at a LESSER VALUE because someone is BLACK? Why should I become a MARTYR because most BLACK people chose the RED PILL when the REALITY of long commutes and gas prices has dimmed the mirage of large suburban houses and big box stores.

West was so Raggedy that homes were being sold in the eighties for $1, but you had to fix it up. And all the change downtown happened fast, like a three year time frame, it’s ongoing but it will be San Francisco east once all the new high rise resenditials open up.

Who wants loud music blaring through their windows after a long day?? Seriously. This tradition has long passed and really it’s time for the Howard University campus area to upgrade anyway. That store has always been tacky and although I’m sympathetic to the symbolism it holds among the D.C. natives, they have had decades to gentrify their own neighborhoods and keep up with the demand. It’s time for them to let go. They won’t win this fight. They didn’t value the gold mine they sat on for decades, they treated their downtown and uptown neighborhoods like trash and didn’t invest in its real estate, or business, so it’s only a matter of time before someone else does. It’s the name of the game baby.
Black D.C. natives have had DECADES to upgrade the city! They live in the nations capitol for goodness sakes and have occupied even the most affluent parts of town like Georgetown since slavery. Capitol Hill, Navy Yard, Eastern Market, Adams Morgan, Anacostia, Howard University, Georgetown were all predominantly black areas since the early 1900’s. They should’ve been smarter and gentrified their own neighborhoods! They had ample time. They were sitting on diamonds and gold and did nothing with it. The whole go-go scene takes place in PG county anyway— where all the black D.C. natives will have no choice but to relocate too. For those who have missed the message.

This store was there playing music long before they even build the new apartments . by you saying D.C. NATIVES I’m guessing that you’re not from D.C. and this has NOTHING to do with Howard University .For the record, there are plenty of blacks that still live in the area and there are WHITES that even stop by and listen to the Music Who live in the area Too .and lastly Why move into the Area if you saw that it was custom for GO GO Music to be playing if you want a peace and quiet after a long day of work? You also forgot to mention that there are also plenty of white clubs in the same area also Blaring their music as well way after the GO GO music has been turned off and the store has closed.
