For 24 years, the metro PCS store at the corner of 7th Street and Florida Avenue in Washington D.C.’s Shaw neighborhood has played go-go music through outdoor speakers with no complaints.
But the area has slowly gentrified with wealthy investors pricing the low-income residents out of their homes. Now the area is an upscale neighborhood of high income hipsters, corporate executives and soccer moms.
In April, metro PCS’s parent company T-Mobile sent a memo to the store ordering them to shut off the outdoor speakers after someone moved into a new luxury apartment building across the street and threatened to sue.
The hashtag #DontMuteDC soon popped up on Twitter.com, and more than 50,000 people signed a petition asking T-Mobile to turn the music back on.
D.C. councilwoman Brianne Badeau sent a letter to T-Mobile explaining the history of go-go music and encouraging the company to change its decision.
“Go-go is a blend of funk, hip-hop, Latin, and other genres that emerged in the ’60s and ’70s. It is a unique product of D.C. and its black residents,” she wrote. “This corner is often where many hear go-go for the first time. The music that has played there since at least 1995 – and the CDs sold next door – have kept this cultural spirit alive.”
Since last month, thousands of protesters have assembled at the corner of 7th and Florida Avenues to protest the decision until the music is turned back on.
The rallies include go-go music with live bands and a DJ spinning popular go-go hits by Wale (“Pretty Girls”) and E.U. (“Da Butt”).
Councilman Robert White and other D.C activists hope to reach a compromise with T-Mobile.
“When you move to a neighborhood, you’ve got to appreciate the culture of that neighborhood, the sound of that neighborhood. It is not OK to jump into a neighborhood and then seek to change it,” said White.

They don’t want us in their neighborhoods because they think we are going to change it, but they have no problems coming into ours and trying to change it. https://media1.giphy.com/media/yycmDAaXmutMp5e2I5/giphy.gif
Good.
Sick of white folks, their privilege and their entitlement. When I saw the interview clip of the white man saying Howard University should relocate if it didn’t want non students and their animals walking through The Yard… chile… let me not get started.
Sorry, but I don’t agree. Things change. That’s how cities are. Happened to me and I moved and relocated. Now I see my new neighborhood changing. But it’s good for me, because, while it has changed, it has also improved. You simply cannot have the good changes without some of the bad. It don’t work like that.
That dude pissed me off!! That was a privileged ass comment
Lmao see you have to be careful when poking the bear. That white man/woman moved in and complained about the music from the speaker, now not only do they have to hear a live band playing on loud speaks, but thousands of protesters. Be careful what you ask for
THEY want to move into the neighborhoods for the “diversity”, then want to end/dismantle the diversity.
#DONTMUTEDC
It is about way more than the music at 7th and Florida Ave.
It is about erasure of DC culture and non inclusiveness, it is about DC being the most gentrified city in the entire U.S etc etc etc
The issue here is Go-Go is part of DC culture and people want to be able to keep their traditions. Moving into a neighborhood and changing some things like adding more stores is good. Beefing up security and fixing things up, good. But changing a deeply entrenched, positive, uplifting aspect of the culture, not good.
By the block and stop buying weave and Jordan shoes, stop getting into too much student loans because most job or career won’t pay it off in quick time ( businesses administration degree) with a student loan of $150-250k only making $10/14hrs. How you going to buy the block or buy old homes and restore them. Black people need to start ”Strategic”.
Just made a similar remark.
Tell that to the yt folks that are mad about the music.
I’m saying. It’s like moving to New Orleans and trying to do away with Mardi Gras!
Waaaay more! It’s about tradiition, culture, and a place people call home!
This is facts. There are so many white people on Florida Ave these days, you would forget Howard was a couple of blocks away.
Yeah I heard about this on The Read podcasts. They be having picnics and letting their dogs crap all over campus. Like it’s not a f*cking park. You don’t see us going to Vanderbilt, Yale, or Brown having Barbecues, and family reunions and sh!t.
It may not be good in the minds of those who like it, but if the residents that are moving in don’t want it no more, then it needs to go where it is wanted. The residents moving in and buying/renting are essentially paying taxes to the city and they city has laws and ordinances. Just because this particular corner was allowed to break those laws/ordinances for years because the residents then didn’t mind it and law enforcement turned a blind eye, don’t mean that it is going to be acceptable now that the new residents want them enforced.
As a Washingtonian we know this and folk are fed up.
Like someone said on IG….I support this message.
Miss you DMV!!!
What they SHOULD do is pick a day EVERY week to protest and cause traffic jams and make those people late for work, late picking up their kids from soccer practice, late for wine with the girls… unable to get down the street with their Jack Russell Terriers and force THEM to leave. I’d plan a bar b que in the park every weekend and make them so uncomfortable jogging and walking to Starbucks that they’ll be dying to get away from all those “colored” folk.
Who said the store was breaking laws and ordinances??
Noise ordinances area a real thing. I would put money down that this is breaking local noise ordinances. You have got to apply for a legal permit to do that and it is up to the local jurisdiction as to whether or not you are granted that.
Amen!
There’s a huge difference between being able to buy a pair of $150 shoes and having the ability to “buy up the block”… there’s absolutely no comparison. None at all.
THIS!
True but we still don’t know
Kerp the music on. It’s the culture of the neighborhood. I sure dont want to live in a whitewashed place. If you want that move somewhere else.
I get that point but when you move into a neighborhood you have to accept it AS IS versus assuming you can move in and change it. What if it doesn’t? It’s not the fault of the residents who were already there and created that environment, it’s the fault of the person who know it was going on and moved there anyway. If I don’t like loud music and am considering moving where that goes on, I would find somewhere else to move.
What a beautiful sight to see.
Don’t MOVE where you can’t deal with what has already been happening historically, for decades. Wypipo really getting out of control with the constant colonization of places that aren’t for them.
This is what white people do. Gentrification isn’t new it’s just what they call it now. Whites moved to America and told the Natives they should move and they own this land. Did the same with mexico(which was part of the u.s. before whites), South Africa, and every where else they have been.
I ain’t got nothing for this. So they named baby Sussex “Archie.” Ok then.
The way neighborhoods become gentrified is when the minority owners sell their property or lose it somehow. I cant be mad at someone who sells a $45,000 house for $200,000. Maybe they are tired of living in the bottoms?
And this is why folks you pay your property taxes. My friend’s mom stays in a gentrified area previously known as ” 3rd Ward.” They can’t get her to sell her home for nothing. White folks feel her home is an eyesore. Little do they know, the last offer on her home was for over a million. Mind you ten years ago her home was valued under 50k! Now the city wants her house to become a historically known landmark Love it!
There has always been money in land filled with “us”. If it were not so, why do they ALWAYS come in and try to colonize it in some shape, form or fashion.
I agree. Sometimes the only reason why people are, “forced out” is because they don’t pay their property taxes on the home. Or take out additional mortgages and can’t pay the loan. I work in real estate. The mess is sad.
You fight with money, not protests. This is why Black people continue to lose at life.
While you’re busy organizing protests, the next buyer is closing on the building you’re protesting in front of…. lol….
A family friend owns beachfront property and the Hilton wanted to buy it for millions. She refused because the land had been in the family for generations. That was more important than money.
Man, they want what we have from the top of our head down to the “souls” of our feet, to our land and the food we eat. Resist, mama. Resist!
She will sell. Watch. When an area becomes valuable, everyone who’s in the way will be moved out. Skin color has nothing to do with this.
This is all about $$$$
Maybe this is off topic, but ultimately, I see that Black folk did not either own their homes, take care of their homes, or sold it to the highest bidder in the DC area. Gentrification is new to certain cities, but folks owing their shit is not new. Personal financial management, paying taxing, etc., is not NEW! Black folks keep your properties and this shyt will not happen as much when YT folks do pop up in your city/neighborhood. Its crazy living out in DC, I read an article stating that DC is setting Affordable homes aside for those that make up to $141,000. If that ain’t gentrification, than I don’t what is.
I’m not disagreeing in theory with you, but in legal practical terms, it is not the responsibility of the new investors and residents to accept what I would bet you is law breaking. Just because this corner has been permitted to break local noise ordinances for 24 years doesn’t mean that it is entitled to do so going forward. It was allowed to break them for so long because the residents AT THAT TIME did not mind it and the police turned a blind eye. Now things are changing and, legally, the new residents are not in the wrong. They seem to want those legal ordinances enforced by the city that they pay taxes to.
I knew of a family that moved to what was an industrial part of town along with other new residents over about ten years. The local factories were breaking laws by continuing to work beyond what local ordinances allowed, making noise and all that. They’d been doing so for decades with no issue and they got used to that as if it were legal. But it wasn’t because people were moving into what was a technical residential area right next to where the factories were. The new residents had the noise ordinances enforced because they were legally zoned for and recognized as a residential community.
This is what has happened in cities for centuries.
Commented on that below too!
Great points.
Sure there’s a difference. The difference is White folks will wear some $25 clearance shoes, and save that $125 so that they can pay cash for a house on that block. It’s called money management, and spending wisely.
You fight with money, not protests.
_______________________
THIS! THEY only “value” the loss of life and the loss of income. Protest? That only makes you tired and wears out your voice and shoes. Hit’em in the pockets!
That’s it.
I bet most of those homes were either sold at auction (because someone didn’t pay their property taxes), left without an heir so the district took over or sold because they couldn’t afford it anymore or wanted to relocate.
Take pride in your neighborhood and it won’t become someone else’s opportunity.
Race has nothing to do with this. Knowledge does.
A combination of both goes a long way. That’s how King did it.
#truth
True. And we’re STILL fighting for “equality”, in a sense. STILL! YEARS LATER! #howlong
If the neighbourhood is now gentrified and ppl moved then I can see why there would no longer be the appeal for go-go music in that location. The same ppl no longer live there, time to let it go. Should have held on to your property as hard as you trying to hold on to the music.
If it is the case that the law is being broken, then there’s no argument here. Rules are rules.
No, that’s a completely different scenario.
What are you protesting for? Because they won’t allow you to play music? Ok, well by now, if you don’t understand home ownership and how it relates to a strong, stable neighborhood, then you’re out of luck.
King was protesting racial inequality and economic injustice. These are note the same things.
When they make her house a landmark they will put her out! It’s not a compliment, they are just trying to get around her not selling.
I feel like there’s alot going on in this headline. I see gentrification, go-go and Metro. Lemme read this story slowly.
I really don’t believe it’s about the music but about maintaining a tradition that has defined the neighborhood. Certain things contribute to the culture of a community so I think they are just fighting to keep it feeling like home.
Hello, I’m going to overlook the poor grammar and glaring misspellings in your condescending bitter rant in an attempt to understand you.
To be clear, you suggest that black people stop attending colleges and incurring debt and instead take the money they would use to purchase sneakers and weave, to purchase homes and renovate them. This is your solution to the wealth gap? There are a few books, articles, studies you should read that may dispel these ideas. As an FYI, blacks save as much (and in many cases more) than their counterparts. Don’t believe everything you see on tv.
“What We Get Wrong About Closing the Racial Wealth Gap” is a good place to start.
Since this post is about the city of DC, race is a major factor. It was once called The Chocolate City, now it can no longer be called this. However, I do agree knowledge is universal, but I am always rooting for my Black people to not go through things like this.
That true. Alot of the areas that are being gentrified are full of rental properties anyway. If the landlord is a Chinese investor he doesn’t care about keeping the neighborhood culturally diverse. He may not have ever been to the neighborhood. He just purchased the building or property at an auction. The lots of land in my neighborhood are owned by Chinese nationals. They are just sitting on the empty land waiting for the value to increase.
Let me give you another scenario, say you owned your home, purchased your home for like 80’k in the 80’s. You kept up your home but since 2000 the value of your home has increased exponentially over the past almost two decades as well as the property taxes but your salary has not increased exponentially. You are not old enough to qualify for senior property tax assistance but you cannot afford the taxes at the current assessed value.
Then what?
A business administration degree is not $150-250k unless you a dummy and you got fooled.
Metro PCS has been around that long?!?!?
But was it a chocolate city full of property owners or renters? I agree with your posts above and reaffirm that we have done ourselves a disservice in the areas if personal financial management (regardless of how much you make) and paying taxes.
The wealth disparity in this country is split down racial lines so it is a race issue.
Exactly. Stop selling your homes to investors simply because they are offering CASH. That is how so many people are getting moved out of their homes. “Bob buys ugly houses for cash” they call the number, Bob gives you 50k to buy your property in an upcoming neighborhood, add 20k to renovate and sells for more than triple what he paid to someone who can afford to pay the price.
Gentrification will kick out all black folks out of DC. Once it hits Anacostia and NE, its a wrap. With neighouring counties in Virginia and Md being the most expensive in the country, dirty south is the only option. Dc has really changed and its changing with construction cranes in every corner.
It has started in Anacostia.
911 would be called pronto. Students have police called on them just for taking a nap in the common area, so the Average Tyrone is SOL.
Get a new job if your income hasn’t increased since 2000.
If the majority of the residents of the neighborhood have changed, then it is now their home and they have a right to make changes to their neighborhood.
Should be a doctor, lawyer or anesthesiologist with thag type of college bill
Refinance, take the equity out of that home, rent it out and move. You will still own the home, let someone else pay for the mortgage move somewhere you can now afford.
Exactly. overall let me make over 300k on my current house i’m selling and moving outta dodge.
Here in Toronto ppl are a lot luckier, their homes were purchased cheap and they get to sell sometimes 500k or more over the value. These investors are demolishing and putting million dollar properties on it but oh well. if i have a extra 500k to 800k i really don’t care. imma buy a property and be mortgage free. Simple.
Not everyone is willing to sell their soul like you
????
she needs to sell that shat. a million dollars, what is the issue here. do you know what you can do with a million dollars in the bank. and she can still buy a home fully paid off and still have over 500k in the bank.i see big ass home in texas for 300k. acres of land and all. you don’t even need to really work if you have a extra 600k just sitting in the bank. i’d sell possibly leave the state cause clearly it’s too expensive and start life somewhere cheaper and warmer.
All towns, cities, etc. have noise ordinances and if the music has been turned off due to impending legal action, then violation of the local noise ordinance is the legal standing the lawsuit is based on.
I didn’t know that. Our people are under siege.
Exactly the hood is still the hood not matter how they dress it up. i’m leaving.
It’s the expense that comes with its room and board on campus, meals. If you live away from home it adds ups
People are trying to simplify something that has happened by design………..Not because black folk are negligent.
Yes baby there is. You get your butt a $50 pair of Nikes at the Academy and put the other $100 in a savings account. After a while you will have enough for a down payment on a home or condo that will be yours.
Selling a house is not selling your soul. It’s an asset. I’ve bought and sold 4 houses, and my soul is still intact along with my banking and retirement accounts.
I didn’t say that, I said it has not increased exponentially like the value of your home has.
My people, my people.
We have got to stop regurgitating these same tropes that have been perpetuated by white people.
Fact 1: Thanks to government enforced segregation, housing discrimination, and redlining black people were forced to live in areas that were considered undesirable. This includes working and middle class families.
Fact 2: Despite paying taxes these areas are intentionally and systematically neglected by city and state governments. The roads are in poor conditions, waste is not picked up regularly, etc.
Fact 3: Black home ownership has a lower value than white ownership. On average black home ownership is 18% less than whites. This means that the same exact house can be built on the same street and the value of the house is determined solely by the RACE of the occupant. Thus, when a single white person moves into a neighborhood this could increase the property tax to an amount that the current blacks are not able to afford. How is this the black homeowners fault?
LOL Chocolate ? City got time today.
Have fun with that gentrifiers ?
Since you referenced being a senior citizen, I would sell it and live more comfortably off the proceeds, and rent somewhere nice where I’m not saddled with the maintenance that comes with property ownership.
They just opened a Bus Boys and Poets over there.
I see more and more yt folks getting on Metro at Congress Heights, Anacostia stations. more live in condo development in Ward 8 I own one in..Oh it is happening.
Some of these commenters are so defeated.
Please STOP ?? pointing out known and historical data ?
Don’t start to make no sense in here or break down the master plan.
Yassss Hunty Black people showing up and out!!!!!?????????
how is that selling your soul. that’s why some ppl stay broke.
property is the best investment anyone can ever have. Make what you can on it. Imagine selling and you even have the ability to buy for you and your children?? how nice would that be.
Girl I didn’t say to stop going to college however be strategic in getting an education ?. Please, high light where I say black should stop ? going to college. Yes, people need training requirements for some career doctor, teacher, nurse etc. Talk about tons of black women walking around with JD and law degree but won’t take the bar exam. They only want to run none profits. Then you are all mad at Chinese, East Indian and Arabs. They fool resources come to buy your block and sell you weaves etc.
I’m black and if I moved into the area I wouldn’t want to hear it. I actually live in Maryland and work in DC. All the noise and street performing near businesses and metro stations pluck my nerves. I need peace and quiet where I live and work.
“But the area has slowly gentrified with wealthy investors pricing the low-income residents out of their homes. Now the area is an upscale neighborhood of high income hipsters, corporate executives and soccer moms.”
When I tell you that this sh*t irks me to NO END!!!!!!!!!!!!
That’s one place i thought they won’t like to invade but i was wrong.
Howard University is very close to here They’ve been bumping music on that corner since I attended Howard ‘85-‘89
I’m sure that music was playing when they builders and current residents toured the area. They knew it was “a thing”. Why move into a situation and expect them to change it for you. It’s not really fair.
Drive through Good Hope Rd and up MLK.
You’re not alone. It’s happening bad in Chicago too.
LOL Right?
What’s the most insulting is how they don’t GAF about the neighborhood until some WYPIPO move in. There is an area here that JUST got a grocery store within walking distance for the first time in over 20 years…because the area is being gentrified.
Lol dayum
where I’m not saddled with the maintenance that comes with property ownership
_________________
THIS! I don’t want THAT responsibility. Nor do I want to keep paying for a house for 30, 40 and 50 years. The minute I miss a payment, the sheriffs are knocking at “MY” (because I’m a “homeOWNER”) house to put me out.
Yes, all thst noise and people hanging out stresses me out. I live in the South and I cant stand a muthafucka that sits on his porch or garage with the door open all day playing music and watching people.
Fact 4: When individual blacks decided to independently or collectively work together to purchase and renovate homes, guess what happened? Redlining. They were not given loans, mortgages or insurance. Guess who got them? That’s right…white corporations.
Fact 5: Despite what you see in the news or hear your local cooning azz black puppet say, blacks are not spending all of their money on Jordans and weave.
Fact 6: Blacks actually SAVE more of their income than whites. The problem is that, once again, thanks to white supremacy and generational debt, blacks have less to save. We make less and are often required to take care of our family members.
Then move and work in a remote area
They are the new owners and they want the music gone. It’s not a bad request. There’s really no legitimate reason to keep the music playing.
No, that’s not how any of this works. Owners set the rules.
I wasn’t going to do it. I’m just going to stop at Fact 7, but I feel like maybe some people really don’t know. And places like this blog are the only place they actually have these types of conversations or read this type of information.
Each one, teach one.
Correct one of my family friend who enlightened me she meets Africa American whose family willed house ? for inheritance they couldn’t pay the property taxes. Which is sad ? we need an aggressive lesson on money management, property values, entrepreneurs, taxes, stock market, credit debts etc. Other people come to America to get loans and set up shop in the said community will never donate a dime to local benefits.
I enjoy peace and quiet too which is why I chose a condo off the beaten path, off in the cut, hundreds of yards from the street. I can’t take loud music, bass, or loud folks. I wouldn’t choose to move to a loud area.
Special people like you who can’t respect other people space and culture irks me. People don’t have to change to accommodate you.My guesses are always right, you are one lonely woman.
People purchase these homes with great pride. Raise their families there. And many plan to leave the homes to their children. Then in their golden years there are all these attempts to bully them into moving because they don’t fit the new dynamic of the neighborhood. It’s sickening.
https://media3.giphy.com/media/x6sfBlcbXW7kc/giphy.gif
Lmao very true.
You sell and move to where you can afford the taxes.
There is no reasonable reason to move into a neighborhood with current set ups KNOWING it will bother you with the intent of making them change for you. It’s selfish. Now if the music was a new thing we would be talking about something different.
“Blacks actually SAVE more of their income than whites.”
Where are you getting this from?
I cant stand a muthafucka thst sits on his porch or garage with the door open all day playing music and watching people.
********************************************
This just made me belly laugh!
I feel like gentrification is the new redlining.
And Harlem and Brooklyn.
Maybe not, but they do have to obey the law. If local noise ordinances say that this is breaking the law, then it is. Period. It don’t matter if police turned a blind eye to it for years. The law should be enforced everywhere according to local ordinances and if it ain’t, well, then that is a rightful lawsuit.
There is no reasonable reason to move into a neighborhood with current set ups KNOWING it will bother you with the intent of making them change for you. It’s selfish. Now if the music was a new thing we would be talking about something different.
It’s like people who move into homes that they know aren’t pet friendly, they get mad they can’t have a pet.
Of course, theirs a huge difference the person who plans for the future always have the upper hand. Boyz in Hood teaches about gentrification but we are still sleeping. Nike stock that pays dividends is less than $150.00. However, I am not here to tell people what to do with their coins. Pool resources together just like Chinese, East Indians, Arabs and whites they do that so easily
But you don’t mind when that nosy white couple who don’t play music want to know everything about you and who visits you. Peeping throw the blinds to check on you.
Race can only be a factor if it’s hindering you from doing something. What’s hindering people in 2019? Nothing.
If they don’t want to go through it, then they need to stop protesting and start building wealth.
This gentrification thing is becoming a major issue in so many parts of the country. The New York Times had a great article on this very recently. I’d advise anybody who has a few minutes to spare to check out their article dealing with this phenomenon: https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2019/04/27/upshot/diversity-housing-maps-raleigh-gentrification.html
Right. They see what the neighborhood could be with a little TLC and big money and they want back in. I feel for those people stuck in bad neighborhoods. Gotta live with bars on their windows like their in prison. Pit bulls running thru your yard. Trash all over the place. Especially when you get old. Nobody wants to live like that.
Gentrification is sad and its really disheartening. They are trying to eradicate a whole CULTURE. Go-Go music is DC. DC is go-go music (and a whole LOT of other stuff pertaining to US. It wasnt known as Chocolate City for eons for naught).
Thank you. Some common sense!
I get it but that ship has sailed.
The new owners are redefining the neighborhood and its culture.
I live in a black neighborhood, and we take care of our community. So Idk what white people your talking about.
Well…neighborhood culture is cyclic so we’ll see in maybe ten to twenty years what this will become.
True. But it’s about entitlement though… based on race, and money. Money brings this sense of entitlement where people feel they have the power & clout to have people change things to how they want it. And many times, they do end up getting things their way, unfortunately.
I think Black people need to stop thinking like victims and start making moves like victors.
All of your facts are historical and have nothing to do with 2019.
Knowledge trumps race any day and this is why Black people are losing. Busy being “woke” about things that don’t matter.
Again, this has nothing to do with race and everything to do with money. Either build wealth, invest or keep watching “your” neighborhoods disappear.
Hamilton, Darrick, and Ngina Chiteji. “Wealth” in Patrick Mason (ed.), International
Encyclopedia of Race and Racism, Second Edition, Macmillan Reference 2013.

I mean there are plenty of studies, books and articles available, but this is a starting point for you.
For you. For me it’s about community. But hey
For you it’s about investment. For others me it’s about community.
These people are not renters.
They don’t have to accommodate anything.
They bought the homes and want to protect their investment. Again, there’s no legitimate reason to keep the music playing. Things have changed and those who refuse to change can either buy up the neighborhood or leave.
I know. And no doubt they will get their way on this as well. My comment is geared toward those saying that it’s their right to complain as the homeowner, etc. It’s selfish and DEFINITELY ENTITLED. I toured the area of the home I was purchasing several times. Weekdays, weekends, nights, etc. Wanted to see what the area was like under all circumstances. Didn’t want to move in and be the new mean lady complaining about stuff.
Exactly my point, you cannot hold on to the home/keep the property in DC if you’re being taxed out of it.
Which is one reason so many black folk have had to move, some with their homes already paid off.
Thanks! Checking it out now!
Buts it not just black communities.
They rural areas are disapearing too. Land has always been valuable. Just look at the Greater Atlanta metro. Small rural areas in NC are being transformed like Apex and Knightdale. Population booms change things.
They bought those homes, in that neighborhood, with full knowledge that the music played during the day. They made an informed decision to move there anyway.
That is privileged entitlement at it’s finest. What makes the new home owners more important than the people who have lived in that neighborhood for years, who don’t mind and may even enjoy that music?
Would I, personally, want to have to hear that music on my day off? No. But if you want to live in a quiet neighborhood you need to move to a quiet neighborhood.
That’s right y’all! Show up and show out! Don’t allow these yuppy puppies to take away your symbol of cultural pride. They want to infiltrate your neighborhood because they want to feel your blackness. But, not emerse in it. It’s true. They want juuuuuuust enough of us to be cool to all their silicone valley, Wall Street uptight buddies. But don’t want Tyrell playing that “jungle music” within earshot of the house G ma used to live in before he bought it. FOH!
I appreciate it because I am not always in the enlightening mood. Kudos to you!
This is ignorant and utter bs.
How do you build wealth? Wealth has been handed to white folks for generations which in turn allows them to pass said wealth down to their families. The opposite is true for blacks. We have been stripped of wealth and have been forced to pass ob debt.
History is how you build wealth. It doesn’t happen in 2019. It happened in the 1930’s (The New Deal) when whites were given land, housing, and grants to purchase land and housing. When they were given loans to start businesses. When they were given money to attend colleges. When their high schools and colleges were funded. When black farm workers and maids were excluded from receiving benefits.
Wealth is HISTORICAL. We are forced to operate within a system of white supremacy. In order to get a job, you have to be hired. You have to be qualified. Qualifications usually require education. Education requires access and opportunity. In order to purchase a home you have to get a loan. The location of your home is dependent on access.
Yes, you may be able to be successful (to some extent) on an individual basis, but collectively the system is set up in 2019 to exclude us. Period.
Thinking like victor won’t do shyt for you.
I had a neighbor that used to do that. LOL Him gone on to…well I ain’t gone say Glory cause he wasn’t a good man.
So I think “Him downstairs”.
We need to do this for every city. I literally had to move twice due to gentrification.
Uh oh! LMBO@Him downstairs.
Hope I’m not late ????? text you later
Which owners though? What about the other people who populate that area? What makes them less important than the new people? We both know the answer to that…SMH
Oh so you are here. Garner too. However it is impacting blacks here in rural areas as well. Black farmers were disenfranchised in all of the local communities way prior to any recent event. Take a field trip to the Farmers Market out on Lake Wheeler and see how many black farms represented vs white ones.
*Garner and Cary both have huge historically BLACK comm’s. as does Morrisville. So it IS impacting us more still even in rural areas.
Chile…he prolly bust hell wide open! lmao
777-9311.
I was going to cite info but nah do the damn research. The nerve with going with the narrative that oppresses us. Thanks because I canna
No more than pulling yourself up by the bootstraps.
Don’t get me wrong we should have hope/optimism, a persevering spirit but you also need to know how this system works.
I’m done for the day. Completely over it..
Holly Springs ,Apex, and Morrisville are full of Indians/Asians. Its not even white people doing the gentrification its foreigners. But you know I cant be mad at them they gotta live somewhere too.
If you have lived in this city all your life which I have, you expect to hear that music when you are in that area. It has been silenced recently, unfortunately. ANYONE that have looked to purchase property in that area has heard it. Why complain about it after the fact, after you purchase the property. This is who we are. That is apart of DC culture and us Washingtonians know this. If it bothers you, buy somewhere else. Don’t come and rain on our parade!!! I occasionally stop just to GROOVE with it!
We ALL gonna text you now…giggles
Last night at 14& U (The Reeves Center) was Lit! BYB performed and when I say the area was FLOODED with black folk.. IT SURE WAS! You could feel the smug coming from The gentrifiers as they trickled through to get to their “homes”… Now if we can stay active and become as assertive in other inequalities!! THAT’LL TEACH ‘EM!!
Wow. really? I’m sorry to hear that. I moved once not knowing the gentrification was coming and I’m so glad I left when I did. I’m disgusted. They act like they built the damn place and like they were there from the start.
Evans Road in Cary/Morrisville was founded by the black Evans family. Now a major MAJOR road. Morrisville Carpenter Road and N.C. 54? Blacks. So much stuff in Apex. I was out there Monday. The Indian/Asians arent really trying to gentrify. Its the IBMs, Lenovo’s, and pharma companies at fault for that bc well they are here to work.
Thanks. I just got back from reading it. More than informative.
FACT: When Da Butt, Candy and The Electric Slide come on everybody gets up dances at the cookout…except the elders who are judging quietly…LOL…
Its going on in my city too…I think its having an adverse effect tho cause robberies are going up in Philly…”they” can move in if they want but they still gonna get stuckup and have their house broken into…
I’m sorry but your outlook sucks. Maybe that’s why you cannot understand what I’m saying.
You’d be surprised to know that most of these neighborhoods are being bought up by Koreans, Vietnamese, Indians, African Americans, Whites, Chinese, Lebanese you name it.
Most of these people have been steadily building wealth for only the past decade or so. A little thing called the Internet has revolutionized the way people make their money nowadays.
Many of these people are recent immigrants to this country who are miraculously thriving and working within the same “white system” you claim is holding only Black people down.
No one cares what happened only in the 1930s honey. As you’re here recounting history, people in 2019 are closing a deal worth hundreds of thousands or millions. And guess what? Some of them are Black! Does that make you feel better or would you rather believe your victim narrative?
By the way, your historical account ignores African Americans who were building wealth during that time as well. Google Jeremiah Hamilton.
History is nothing but sentiment at this point. Yes, things happened that weren’t fair. So what? Life isn’t fair and no one owes you anything. Either learn something that will help you win or keep losing. The choice is yours.
Liberalism has Black folks thinking Symbolism and Imagery is a victory. smmfh
You’ve lost your community and you’re protesting music at a T-Mobile store? Your councilman is sending letters because of music but is SILENT ON BLACK FOLKS BEING MOVED OUT? I’m done…..
Atlanta, Memphis, New Orleans, Chicago, Harlem, Brooklin, LA, St. Louis, Detroit…..
Generational Treason –Why We Have No “Elders”
youtu . be/AFGWeZOPDnM
Yea I was forced out. Courts agreed to let me stay until I find another place. Half of my old bldg was forced out. White people moved all up and through Harlem. We also was notified late when it came to town halls etc. NY went from #39 on the most expensive list to number 7 this year. Thankfully I’m on an exit strategy because no growth to obtain wealth because it goes into keeping afloat.
It’s sad but at this point, Black people don’t want to succeed. They’d rather point back to history instead of looking to build for the future.
Oh wow. I like peace and quiet where I live and work so I’m lonely. You must have very long arms for that reach. You must have a large azzhole from having your head up it.
They are taking our neighborhoods right underneath us slowly but surely. Luckily my parents still own our home in SE D.C
They being trying to buy it since the put up the new stadium, we not SELLING!
Funny how they flooded our neighborhoods with drugs and guns, cause the property value to decrease, just to buy at low price and push us out ???????????????
I agree and I live in the burbs. I did the city thing loved it but grew out of it.
???
I mentioned my mom lived on 15th and D SE for 13 years but was concerned she wouldn’t be able to afford taxes on a house that had tripled in value ,11 years ago. I know that house is being assessed at every bit of 700k now because it had already been gutted and remodeled when she bought it. God bless my mom’s soul.
I can see that happening. I’m less than 10minutes by train to downtown. I really enjoy the short commute. Thanks to gentrification, I have everything I need within a mile radius. I also don’t have children though. The public school system sucks so I would probably make a mad dash for the burbs if I had kids.
Miami and Fort Lauderdale
I will read it when I get home. I did print out two copies for my co-workers to read also. It looks very interesting. Thanks for sharing
I do live in the suburbs but since I’m not a McWorker I get to dress up every day and go to my lovely office where I should not have to be subjected to folks with no job who want to sing and dance on the streets while I’m trying to get to work or concentrate while I’m at work.
I did cite research. It’s one article. Meanwhile, there are plenty of articles citing plenty of other studies saying the opposite. I posted that response with those articles but it hasn’t been approved yet. My point is that it does nobody any good to dispel faulty “truths” and I cannot stand it when I see it.
It don’t even make sense.
Sorry but I could care less of the origins pf the music, after a long day of making my millions I want peace and quiet in my house
Yeah, some of these landlords will say its pet friendly just to get you to move in and once you’re in there, they change their whole stance. Get EVERYTHING in writing before moving in, is my point because landlords are people too, meaning they will lie.
FACTS!
Can’t even blame these uncultured swines that colonize our communities. Its our own fault. Successful black folks stop abandoning your neighborhoods and then cry “gentrification!!!” when that neighborhood becomes white washed.
Gloria, what you’re saying is so serious. But, I couldn’t help but chuckle at “uncultured swine.” Heehee.
“making”…stealing, expoliting, all the same for some these days.
@yoni7
Especially in my golden years. I do not want the stress of home maintenance (replacement or repairs that can run into thousands of dollars). I’d rather spend that money living more comfortably.
Hallelujah for our mothers! I love my black mother and her beautiful struggle. She made good decisions in spite of every setback.
@MoneyMillz
But that doesn’t equate to people who differ from you selling our souls or not caring abt community. Why do we always have to take a difference of opinion and turn it into disparaging one another?
@Yall…key word in your post is “landlords”. When you own where you lay your head, then you have the legal right to decide what is and is not acceptable/wanted in your home, neighborhood, etc. Ownership has its privileges.
Well to be honest, things can’t always stay the same. Shit has to evolve…just like that NEIGHBORHOOD is evolving. If I moved into an “upscale” area, I probably wouldn’t want loud ass music blaring either…don’t care WHAT kind of music it is. When you PAY for upscale, you EXPECT upscale. I like it quiet, unless it’s a weekend and it’s an event going on or something.
Thank you.
I think gentrification is a good thing. It makes an area better. I don’t believe in pushing good people out, but some of these ghetto mothafuckas gotta GO!
Not to far from where I grew up . Yea the property is worth way much then what my parents paid for it. I remember before we relocated to Atlanta , they were promoting to move out to PG. Now they can afford to make back to DC cause it’s to expensive.
I’m gonna read right now. Thanks for sharing.
Aww that’s the jam!! Not sure how old I was when this song came out but you could tell nothing. My fast ass would jump right on the dance floor doing Da butt!! ????
Anyhoo phawk these cave demons!!?????? Had to get at one in my building again yesterday.? Bish running almost knocking folks over and when she got to the door her app on the phone wouldn’t work to let her in. ????? I bumped the bish out my way and used my fob to get into the lobby. When I go to the second door we have to use the fob or app to get into as well, I let the door close in her face and look at her as it did.??? Doing all that extra sh*t for no reason at all!!
Where I live in SW Atlanta, wealthy Blacks have lived in the neighborhoods since the early 70s but have not maintained the properties over the years. Overgrown landscaping, little or no interior and exterior upgrades and/or maintenance yet there’s plenty of luxury vehicles in the driveways, large churches and folks sharp as a tack at the Kroger and Publix.
Several of the homes still have the original 1950s kitchens and bathrooms (including the old stained, rusted fixtures). I don’t understand why more of us don’t invest in the maintenance and updating of our homes.
Thanks LeBrick!
They’re trying to increase the rent on affordable housing and rent stabilize apartment again in October? it’s becoming too much and eventually these cave demons aren’t going to be able to afford to live here either without 50 million roommates under one roof. ?
????
You’re making too much sense; therefore, this will fall on deaf ears.
I didn’t even see that person’s comment but see what I said up top. Falling on deaf ears. Now I’m selling my soul because I’m focused on building wealth.
God help Black people because poor mentality is a deficit amongst Black people from Africa to the United Status…. smh
You usually find that where people haven’t developed critical thinking skills. Everything is based on emotion, not logic.
Again, more of the same why Black people are losing their neighborhoods!
I had someone tell me that if a BLACK person offered me $100-$150K less for my Brookland home than a WHITE person I should sell to the Black person. Are you suggesting that should be my mindset?
I have mixed feelings about this. I remember walking by that store and hearing music blasting for years, but it wasn’t really a residential area at that time. I have recently visited to see that the surrounding area has completely changed. With that said… Who really would want music blasting loud all the time where you live… what ever the music is??? People should have seen this coming when they started fixing up U street YEARS ago.
I want to be free to move around when I feel like it. Not the stress of wanting to move but having to wait to sell the house first. OR paying two mortgages until the other gets off the market. Or sh!t, I want somebody else to fix it…….because I don’t want/need the added stress. I’m stress free NOW and I want to keep it that way. LOL
The store should have to comply with noise ordinances if local residents complain. The fact that no one has complained for 20+ years is irrelevant.
Of course I know that but the person who I responded to, spoke on renters being upset about dog policies.
Tis the way of the white man.
The overhead shot looks like J’ouvert morning in Carnival. Lol.
Anyway, when I went to college in NC we had a GO-GO band with students from DC. The block was always hot with dem drums ya’ll. We would sweat out a hairstyle dancing.
?”Hold up! Wait ah minute! “??
Post Katrina New Orleans is very similar. Areas that were once very black are a gold mine for yuppies/gentrifiers.
They enjoy our culture, food, fashions, but want to eradicate the actual people. That’s some twisted chit. They do it us. Mexicans. Natives. Everybody.
Me too!!! LOL
Right, cuz it is of paramount importance to be able to play “Da Butt” loudly outside of a place of business all day everyday. I sware sometimes black people…..nevermind.
Loll
Can you expound on “had to move”? You were legally forced to vacate your premises?
Uhmm, I think you are missing the point. I love gospel music, I’m black but I don’t want to hear it blasting all day, periodt. Don’t think this has anything to do with uncultured cave demon swine in this case.
I’m talking about gentrification, periodt. Not this particular phone store episode but in general. I didn’t even mention music….
If you truly want to prevent/resolve gentrification, the short answer is yes (assuming that the black person’s offering is within market value).
But when the white folks move in, take over the neighborhood for some reason the property values increase. Streets with portholes miraculously get fixed, nicer stores/restaurants open up. I’ve seen it happen.
Remember that woman (BBQ Bettie) who called the police on the black family who was BBQ’g at Lake Merritt in Oakland, Cali. That very lake use to have a Juneteenth Festival, no more. They use to have other ethnic festivals, no more. That area became gentrified and all you see now are volleyball nets and white boys on skateboards. They venture to the East side of Oakland to buy their drugs though. In that area now, some are paying $2,000 for a 1 bedroom and if you are in a high rise with a view of the San Francisco Bay it can go much higher.
Oh, ok I see. I just gathered because it was on this post that is what you were referring too….??
I get mad at Black (and brown) people who don’t have the foresight to buy the land and homes and form a coalition against developers and the wealthy moving into their neighborhood.
So you are saying I should leave my heirs $100,0000 to $150,000 less so I can sell to a Black person?
Oh boy, I didn’t say that at all. I’m not sure why you ask me hypothetical questions only to reply again with rhetorical ones. As I previously mentioned, the short answer is yes, you should sell your house to a black person if you want to prevent gentrification. I think that is obvious. Now this is getting more personal as I don’t know your assets/ total finances. How can I advise you on what to leave your descendants? That’s on you to decide based on your own personal financial status, morals, and values.
Don’t forget about the West Side of Oakland, it’s being gentrified like crazy. Historically African American for decades. Oh and it’s BBQ Becky. LOL.
Then don’t move there in the first place.
Shut da fuq! up and pay our ancestors thier dam reparations #ADOS !!!! Can’t wait until THE MOST HIGH destroy this evil muthafukka!! I’ll be in Africa laughing my azz off!
Thanks for the Article!
LMAO?! Plain English, huh? You won’t get an argument from me.. I totally know what you mean and agree.
Black folks should’ve gotten a clue pulled their money together when these properties were 5$ each lol.. now we bitchin ???
I’m sorry and I know in my heart how stressful that was! Oh babe I’m from the BK so you DO NOT have to tell me about Harlem. Didn’t Bill and Hillary start that white ‘block party’ up there? If you don’t mind my asking, where are you residing now?
*insert face palm*
First, let me say Kudos to you for doing some actual research. I just wished you actually comprehended what you read.
Nothing you posted contradicts any of the links I posted or anything I have said in this post. Yes, there is a wealth gap. Yes, blacks are poorer, have less income, and have less savings (actual amount of money). However, blacks save more (% not $) than whites. Our savings income ratio is higher. This means, that although we make less we put more of our income in our savings. However, we still have less money put away in savings because we make less. As an example, if I make $30K a year and I put 20% of my income in my savings annually, that’s $6,000. If you make $90K and you only put 10% in your savings ($9,000), you will still have MORE savings than me, but you’re savings ratio (savings to income) is LESS than mine. Does that make sense? More to the point, you are more likely to have a diversified portfolio (stocks, etc.). Which means that your $9K is actually going to end up being $20K a year. Get it?
Yes I been eyeing that like a hawk. 1010 wins was even shocked at the jump NY had with most expensive. I still can’t get over being 39 to 7 that’s a huge fckn jump. Fares increasing as well so even going to work is a budget
We didn’t have to take the drugs or sell them
They love living like that in NYC though. 2 beds and 7 roommates skipping daily showers and whatnot..lol.
Usual redlining gentrification ish. Financially impossible which is by design. Same blueprint
Back in 1453 we was striving. Smh. We haven’t built a damn thing sense that MLk guy
All we talk about is yesteryear. ???
Some of the articles that I referenced definitely state that we do NOT save more and that we NOT saving ENOUGH. Do you want me to find MORE articles to that point. You are citing ONE article. One.
I’m sorry, but when I look around in my personal experience I do not see black people saving more than others.
We did the same thing when we bought our house. Went at night, during the day and the weekend! I love my neighbors. When we moved in, one neighbor brought us flowers and another spices! :o)
Well I am sorry to DISAPPOINT so many of you but I have been an URBAN PIONEER in DC and the BENIFICARY of GENTRIFICATION.
I bought a house in Columbia Heights in the early 80’s when the Mayor and DC had a serious relationship with CRACK. In the beginning ALL of my neighbors were BLACK. But, LIFE HAPPENS and suddenly they were almost all WHITE. Mayor Barry designated large swatches of the community as an enterprise zone so decades later the housing values SKYROCKETED. After fighting over the house for months with my ex-husband I let go when my son didn’t want to live there anymore.
I now live in Brookland another desirable neighborhood with increasing enterprise zones, walking communities and SKYROCKETING values where the neighborhood is going from BLACK to WHITE. I receive constant OFFERS. Is it FAIR to my CHILDREN to sell my HOUSE at a LESSER VALUE because someone is BLACK? Why should I become a MARTYR because most BLACK people chose the RED PILL when the REALITY of long commutes and gas prices has dimmed the mirage of large suburban houses and big box stores.
True indeed…. the government planning was right on time. Are you from the Northeast?
??
U sound dumb as hell
Ur right about buying up shit. College loans are killing folks
A defeated black man
1. I posted a book and an article. Again, the articles you posted are referencing the dollar amount of savings, not the income savings ratio. Literally, not one single article you posted addresses savings/income ratio. They all talk about the dollar amount of savings.
2. I’m not sure how you would know how much money someone is saving. But, that is definitely anecdotal and does not mean that that is the reality for blacks as a whole.
3. I’m not going to continue to debate this. I have studied this. Actually read books, articles, journals and spoken to black economists about this very issue. If you want to continue to believe that black people don’t save and that we spend all of our money on frivolous things, go for it.
Yea. If white folks dropped off heroine laced sugar cookies would we just eat them and complain later. We are fully aware of their games and we refuse to play.
“AFRICA” America is your land silly nigga. That’s our problem. Those clowns sold us stop with the fetishisian..
It has been my observation that Black people that can ACTUALLY afford to live in DC, DO NOT want to live here.
They’re having a FUNK CONCERT on Saturday.
Are you familiar with the African drummers in Malcom X Park – cough, Meridien Hill Park?
#MoeChella ?
(If yu know, yu know ?) has
Correct all they do is run behind politicians asses lol ?
Exactly that person reply strongly ? like it’s not the truth.
When Gentrification rears it’s racist head.
try telling that to Trump and 300 million white people. All those Africians didn’t participate either.
“Aww that’s the jam!! Not sure how old I was when this song came out but you could tell nothing. My fast ass would jump right on the dance floor doing Da butt!!”
*high fives U. turn the music up*
Wasn’t the music playing when he looked at & bought a home in that neighborh00d?
All the white americans didn’t participate neither.. u think America is bad.. move to Brazil and any other mixed race nation. Don’t get no better than the US buddy. Africans haven’t built a utopia for black folks yet. They waiting on us to do it..backwards shit
Exactly !
The outer boroughs aren’t any better
Thanks
We dont have to buy the drugs or kill each other with guns. Once you know the game change the rules in your favor. Gentrification is pure and simple: black folks not taking care of their property to the point of blight and white folks doing what eva the hell they normally do!
It doesnt matter what the goba=ment plans you know drugs are killers for our community so why they hell do you take them…go to church! I dont fault the goba-ment its your desicion to take drugs!
for how long will it teach? I have seen this before we put up a rucus they nod their heads time goes on, business as usual..thank ya very much.
YES, it is, but do you remember when West Oakland was raggedy as he11??? Remember when downtown Oakland was raggedy? I hadn’t been to downtown Oakland in years, but my husband and I were visiting someone at Kaiser and we drove downtown via Broadway and I couldn’t believe how nice it was, all the outdoor sit down restaurants, a Whole Foods and there was a mixture of races, I WAS SHOCKED!!!!.
West was so Raggedy that homes were being sold in the eighties for $1, but you had to fix it up. And all the change downtown happened fast, like a three year time frame, it’s ongoing but it will be San Francisco east once all the new high rise resenditials open up.
My mom lives near Eastmont. My sister is hoping they gentrify the area.I don’t see it happening. That’s A LOT of cleanup, Lol, Lol.
No I didn’t know this..and I still call it Malcom X Park…I’ma be sure to.come through.. THANKS FOR THE INFO!!!
Well they shadily ousted Council member Brooks, she was holding them back, the developers and the City. I think it will see some change, but probably not like the West. They already redesigning International Blvd, with the tram service. I think East will
be more cosmetically redevolped starting and then pockets of gentrifiers here and there on the wider streets up on High St and so on.
Look tomorrow is NOT PROMISE…SO IF ITS ONLY FOR A DAY THEN THAT DAY MATTERED. NOW NOD YOUR AZZ ON. THANK YOU VERY MUCH!! Scram!!
WOW, didn’t know about the Tram. I can see them gentrifying the area by the ‘Coliseum’ just so it will look more cosmetically appealing to the basketball/baseball fans coming from Burbs.
Oh and yes there’s s a major market rate housing development being constructed on the land where the old naval hospital once stood, and the mayor basically all but said don’t even think about moving in if you’re not making six figures.
I cant believe i missed it. I live roght dont the street from there, smh. I signed the petition, shated it on facebook and even tweeted Wale. I was not going to let the vultures win. I grew up on backyard band and walk past that store all the time. Then whiteys better go back to Maryland because we don’t play.
Own elsewhere if you dont like it. It wont change for you.
Whites were there too lol.
Wrong. They still live there and own their homes. Its the white renters in the shay apartments that have a problem. Nice try though, i wonder if you’re as stupid as you seem.
Thats a lie. They still live there and own. Those homes have been passed down since generations. Its the businesses and white renters that have a problem and want to stomp and get their way.
Lmao seems butt hurt. Now common sense (which you clearly lack) tells you they don’t still live there. If they still lived there, what space are the white renters occupying? I mean someone had to move out for them to move in. Even if they own their home and are renting it out, they still don’t live there.
Sad but true.
Nope, she not selling. She setting her family up for generations to come. I myself have inherited land. The land has been in my family since the 1800s. That is almost unheard of with blacks.
600k, hmmm ok. Short term wealth- look it hp
I so agree.
It dont have to be..600k can more than help u open a business or even buy a franchise. Overall a house is the biggest expense.. when it’s off the table life is much easier
Right. I don’t care for it, but I grew up on it.
they should have notice the go go music playing before they decided to move into the community, I mean after all the music was there first!
I got the answer for ya! DON’T MOVE INTO THE NEIGHBORHOOD. are we supposed to sell out our culture too because the white man don’t like it? after all we were they when it was nothing but drugs and addicts all up and down 7th n t st they knew when they decided to move into the area that there was go go music playing.
we could care less about you and your million. take your millions and move to the burbs, because if you know anything about DC you would know that the area isn’t quiet anyway right off florida ave and georgia ave right down the street from HOWARD U and around the corner from the howard theater.
I love it!!!
got the answer for ya! dont move into the area then and you wouldn’t have to listen to it .i’m so glad you live in Maryland so you don’t have to listen to the music anyway
@DUMBWOOP. IT WAS MORE PEOPLE THAT MOVED INTO THE SHAY BUILDING THAT DIDN’T HAVE A PROBLEM WITH THE MUSIC, IT WAS ONE NEW PERSON WHO DECIDED HE DIDN’T WANT TO HEAR THE MUSIC. YOU DON’T EVEN KNOW SH3T ABOUT DC!!!
you speaking for all blacks now? and you’re wrong protesting is what launch the civil rights movement. protesting is what got the go go music turned back on.
your way of thinking is the same way that the man comes in and take the houses in the first place . its called selling out NOT selling up!
Next thing you know they are walking their dogs on Howard’s campus.
Then move to a quiet neighborhood. And its not all day.
That is beautiful. I would have loved to have seen the look on the person’s face that threaten to sue????
Wrong thread.
Her house been paid for since the 80s
Who wants loud music blaring through their windows after a long day?? Seriously. This tradition has long passed and really it’s time for the Howard University campus area to upgrade anyway. That store has always been tacky and although I’m sympathetic to the symbolism it holds among the D.C. natives, they have had decades to gentrify their own neighborhoods and keep up with the demand. It’s time for them to let go. They won’t win this fight. They didn’t value the gold mine they sat on for decades, they treated their downtown and uptown neighborhoods like trash and didn’t invest in its real estate, or business, so it’s only a matter of time before someone else does. It’s the name of the game baby.
Black D.C. natives have had DECADES to upgrade the city! They live in the nations capitol for goodness sakes and have occupied even the most affluent parts of town like Georgetown since slavery. Capitol Hill, Navy Yard, Eastern Market, Adams Morgan, Anacostia, Howard University, Georgetown were all predominantly black areas since the early 1900’s. They should’ve been smarter and gentrified their own neighborhoods! They had ample time. They were sitting on diamonds and gold and did nothing with it. The whole go-go scene takes place in PG county anyway— where all the black D.C. natives will have no choice but to relocate too. For those who have missed the message.
That doesn’t make sense because “white folks” DID buy the block.
This store was there playing music long before they even build the new apartments . by you saying D.C. NATIVES I’m guessing that you’re not from D.C. and this has NOTHING to do with Howard University .For the record, there are plenty of blacks that still live in the area and there are WHITES that even stop by and listen to the Music Who live in the area Too .and lastly Why move into the Area if you saw that it was custom for GO GO Music to be playing if you want a peace and quiet after a long day of work? You also forgot to mention that there are also plenty of white clubs in the same area also Blaring their music as well way after the GO GO music has been turned off and the store has closed. And FOR YOU TO SAY THAT THE TRADITION HAS LONG PASSED SAY’S WHO YOU? JUST CLICK ON THE VIDEO ABOVE AND TAKE A LOOK AT THE FIFTY THOUSAND GETTING THEIR GROOVE ON!
@CocoBabe88 you also said that ……They didn’t value the gold mine they sat on for decades, they treated their downtown and uptown neighborhoods like trash and didn’t invest in its real estate or businesses, girl bye! do you see all of the BLACK OWNED BUSINESS ALL UP AND DOWN THE UST CORRIDOR ?
Could you go into “their” neighborhoods and make demands?
If you own it, yes actually, you could.
Those “black businesses” are owned by immigrant ethiopian people. NOT african americans classified as “black.”
Couldn’t the music just be played in the store at a decent volume?
Yeah that would be nice. Too bad that it’s not and has never been the case.
not ALL of them!
why are you a self hating black woman? what do you own? how are you helping your people? you are seem like the type that marry WHITE and then think you better than the rest of us black folks
A message to the oreo cookie
Find a mirror and take a look, G
Do you like what you see?
But you’re quick to point the finger at me
You wanna be the big fish, you little guppy
Black man can’t be no yuppie
You put on your suit and tie and your big clothes
You don’t associate with the Negroes
You wanna be just like Jack
But Jack is calling you a nigger behind your back
So back off genius
I don’t need you to correct my broken English
You know that’s right
You ain’t white
So stop holding your ass tight
Cause you can’t pass
So why you keep trying to pass?
With your black ass
