While most moms were preparing to celebrate Mother’s Day with loved ones, racial justice groups around the country were busy bonding Black mothers out of jails so they could spend the holiday weekend with their families.
Black Mama’s Bail Out has bailed out more than 300 Black moms. The organization is part of a national movement to end mass incarceration in America
The group relies on public donations of over $1 million to pay bail for women who can’t afford their bail.
One of those women, Shalice Johnson, was locked up two years ago for the crime of bringing her three children with her to the probation office.
“Children are not allowed in the office because of everybody’s charges and situation is different,” Johnson told theGrio. “There’s some pedophiles in there and they don’t want kids there for the safety of your children and the safety of other people.”
Johnson had a tough choice to make: “I didn’t have a babysitter. I was stuck between a rock and a hard place not reporting to my probation officer or have my kids in the system because I done left them to go report in,” she told theGrio.
Johnson took her children with her but she was not allowed inside the probation office with the children, which meant she technically missed her appointment.
As a result, she was jailed in lieu of $2,000 bail – an exorbitant amount for a struggling mother of three.
To complicate her situation, jailers gave Johnson a pregnancy test during the booking process, and she learned that she was pregnant with her fourth child.
Sitting in jail pregnant and preparing for Mother’s Day without her three children took its toll on her.
“I was empty,” Johnson remembers. “I was depressed. I was crying. So many things going through my mind. I felt lost without them,” she said.
When her public defender told her an organization was bonding her out of jail for Mother’s Day, she was skeptical.
“My public defender came to [my] cell and was like, ‘There’s this organization that’s gonna bail you out for Mother’s Day. Now, I don’t know how real it is, but they are just saying that they got your name off a list,” Johnson told theGrio.
“Is this really happening? Is this for real? Why are they willing to risk their money to have me on the streets with my kids? And they didn’t know me from anybody.”
Johnson was bonded out the next day and she was home with her children before noon.
Today, NBO groups are bailing out EIGHT Black mamas and caregivers in #Maryland. And they're hoping to free a total of 20 before the end of week!

Black Mama’s Bail Out say they have bonded out 70 mothers in time for Mother’s Day this year.
“Black women are some of the fastest growing populations of incarcerated people in this country,” says Samantha Master, an organizer with Black Mama’s Bail Out. Master spoke to theGrio from a jail in the Washington D.C. area where she was busy bailing out yet another mother.
“Moms are the glue that holds communities together,” says Master. “We see women arrested for everything from protecting themselves from their abusers, to sex work and survival ‘crime.’ Our record has shown that the majority of women we bail out their cases are dropped. Some people are held for weeks, sometimes months. We just got out a woman on Monday who was in jail for a year for $100.”
Johnson is grateful for organizations like Black Mama’s Bail Out, which brought her and her children closer together.
“I couldn’t walk to the bathroom without them being attached to me. They hadn’t slept in days until mommy came home. I wasn’t sleeping without my children. Once I reunited with them it was just the best feeling ever.”
80% of women in jail are mothers. Last year, we bailed out 150+ mamas to reunite them with their families for #MothersDay. Here is one of their stories.

Smh that a mother would be locked up for simply bringing her children with her! The probation pardon and prison systems in this country needs a complete overhaul!!
ANd putting ppl on probation because a person can’t pay a traffic ticket or courts fines instead of setting up a reasonable payment plan It’s all ridiculous.
She was damn if she didn’t and damn if she did…wdf
There are payment plans for traffic infractions
Sounds like a great organization
Happy Mother’s Day roses. Be a little selfish today and do something FOR YOURSELF. Do something that makes YOU happy. You deserve it. Love you auntie. You’re like a mother to many.
Happy Mother’s Day Ladies. I hope you are treated very special today and everyday!
Happy Mother’s Day to all my beautiful roses ???
Not in Georgia they put you on probation and yes you pay monthly but you still report to a probation officer and you are told if you miss one payment you are going to jail and the payment plan is NOT based on income it’s you will have to pay this amount monthly period.
Awh man, that’s really cool to read/hear about. Happy Mother’s Day, Ladies. Now, fix me a plate. No back talk.
Lmaooooooo!!
Awesome organization… Happy Mother’s Day!
Johnson had a tough choice to make: “I didn’t have a babysitter. I was
stuck between a rock and a hard place not reporting to my probation
officer or have my kids in the system because I done left them to go
report in,” she told
^^ Has the probation office heard of “skype”????
But on the other hand, some of these archaic laws are meant to discipline and keep people on the straight.
.
Yep, that was a nice move.
OT:
Michael Jackson’s son Prince graduates from college(with a BA). congratulations Prince!
Happy Mother’s Day!
Congratulations Prince! Sweet kid.
I’m sure the mothers feel blessed to spend mothers day with their babies. On that note:HAPPY MOTHERS DAY TO THE WONDERFUL MOTHERS OF THE ROSE GARDEN!!!!
Wonderful!!
Those rules are wild… You can be in Walmart and be in their presence and not know it too
OT: Steve Harvey lost another show!!!
‘Little Big Shots’: Melissa McCarthy to Take Over for Steve Harvey as Host
Oh no, I love LBS, and I love Steve in that show. WTH?
Uh oh he done made somebody mad
Happy Mother’s Day, Renee.
Or maybe he tired of working so much so he cutting back in the gigs which maybe why he sold his homes since he cutting back on work maybe he down sizing.
My thought exactly! ??
I just discovered a new organization to give my support. To say the media or a mega church has access to much information, WHY, haven’t I heard of situations like this. I am hurt, stunned and a little angry.
Happy Mother’s Day enjoy your day ladies!!!
A mess! LOL
Ask for community service. By law they have to give it to you.
Ut Oh…..if zoot suit Steve loose another show, Lady Herion is gontZ
Yeah…but its not really probation probation…they dont drug test you or anything like that..they just want you to pay….i use it all the time LOL because i always come to court with alligator arms LOL
I’m sure this is a rare case. Most of these women likely committed a violent crime, theft, or drug dealing.
Marjorie probably cussed out the wrong folks. Like Kevin Hunter a bad spouse can’t ruin your career.
She has three children she can’t take care of, she’s pregnant with a 4th child, and she’s on probation. She sounds like a real winner. There are so many people out here that deserve a helping hand, but some people keep throwing good money after bad.
She sho iz!
“We just got out a woman on Monday who was in jail for a year for $100.”
———
Sad, and also dumb. On average it costs over $30,000 in taxpayer dollars to keep someone in jail. And over what… over not having $100 in bail money? And this happens all over America every day. It’s a national disgrace.
They could easily send them home on a monitor.
^^ I’ll wait for his interview. There’s got to be a backstory.
Sorry …..I have to totally agree with you ….maybe it’s a Chicago real as fuk mindset….. ?
I’m in Florida….therefore every state is different
How much yew wanna bet that their are folks seated in jail for minor infractions only because they cannot make bail
Meanwhile:
Amanda Knorr was sentenced to 30 months in prison for scamming people out of $54M over a 4 year period of time.
Anna Sorokin aka Anna Delvey received 4-12 years for unapologetically scamming folks for millions.
Everyday Pookie & New are sentenced for life for a $500 crime. If you must crime white collar level is really the route to take.
Does he still host Family Fued?
Stay outta jail.
Humph prolly that seems to be the trend now a days the leeching spouse is causing the bread winner to lose gigs
IDk she starting to strike me as the type that will stay until every last pennT is spenT
Sure is I’ve said going forward before I move to a new state and city I will research their laws and be sure they are in line with what I believe because there are a lot of ppl on probation in Georgia for traffic violations because they couldn’t pay the fine and everyday they face going to jail if they miss a payment this is why ppl are there fighting now for that to Be changed even non violent offenders who can’t afford bail who are low income sitting in jail missing out on working and being productive. They are working on changing those laws too
Well to me it felt like probation probation and like a criminal I had to report to the office every month to see the officer and make my payment I couldn’t call and Pay over the phone or mail a money order in the event I had to work I had to leave work early to go there and pay sit amongst real criminals all the POs carried guns and I was constantly told I would be thrown in jail if I didn’t have the money to pay. To me that’s probation probation minus the drug test. At the time I was new to GA I didn’t know they handed out 1200 and 1500 dollar traffic tickets nor did I know I would be treated like a felon if I couldn’t Pay the ticket the day of court.
I wish I knew that. That was years and years ago when I got that ticket and boy I couldn’t wait to pay that mess off I had to go off on the lady one day I went there and couldn’t make the payment the lady was like if you come here again without the money I’m locking you up I told her ma’am at this point you are causing me anxiety and I’m having panic attacks every month about this money you telling me I’m going to go to jail ain’t gone make the money magically appear from that day on her attitude was different when I went there to pay.
Exactly. Allow the person to get out, work, and make some money, and they’d just have to keep the ankle monitor on until they come in and pay the bail money. That would make way more sense.
It’s not white collar crime that spared them, it’s white skin.
For now
Nathan, I came to say this!??
No sympathy. When you’re a mom your decisions are no longer just about you.
I agree….. those sentiments should go for Dads as well
Didnt he say we are poor bcas we slept toooo much we dont need 8 hours of sleep. I guess he took a long azz nap since all of his shyt is getting cancelled.
Like wanda smith stand your ground broke azz husband going up against katt williams.
Good lawd it’s not the kids fault. Let them have their mommas back at least temporarily and hope that they appreciate the second chance, and if it makes you feel feel any better they have to go back to court anyway cause bailing out does not equal free. Most of these folks are locked up for minor bvllshit anyway while rich drunk white sociopaths get off after running over and killing people or raping chicks. Talk about can’t see the forest for the trees.
HAPPY MOTHERS DAY TO ALL OF YOU INTELLIGENT BEAUTIFUL BLACK WOMEN!
My mother passed away a few years ago, so since then every year I take out a few mothers I consider Mother Figures in my life. I take them all to brunch and dinner and try to spoil them a little. Im just getting in and thought Id pop in to show a little appreciation to the Roses. May God continue to Bless you all.Hope your day was a wonderful day to be remembered.
I wish I could take the pain away.
If you can make it through the night there’s a brighter day
Everything will be alright if ya hold on
It’s a struggle everyday, gotta roll on
And there’s no way I can pay you back
But my plan is to show you that I understand
You are appreciated -Tupac Shakur.
Proverbs 31:28 Her children rise up and call her blessed; her husband praises her as well.
The huge Prison/Jail Industrial Complex is a multi billion dollar venture. It constantly needs warm bodies to survive, hence the BS reasons people are arrested and the ridiculous sentences that are meted out. Unfortunately the kids end up being collateral damage.
?????? Thanks ?. I got you on Father’s Day.
Happy mother’s day to everyone! ??
I hope all of you and your Moms had a wonderful Mother’s Day! I miss my Mother so much.
Likewise ???
??
Thank God!So grateful for organizations like this.
God Bless & Happy Mothers Day!
One of those women sat in jail for a whole year because she couldn’t come up with $100 bail money. Nobody should have to go thorough that. If you don’t have sympathy for somebody in that situation, you’re not human.
Oooooop I forgot about him ????? Lord have mercy!
I agree 100 .I can’t stand living in Amerikkka but blk women need to stop having kids from these dead beat ray-rays and pookies. They know they’re not going to be around to help out.The father should have babysat the kids.
This is great !!!
Happy Mother’s Day to all the Mothers here! ???
Prevents them from voting too, which is another plus for the overlords.
Since this has been deemed the single mammy blog, happy belated to all the single mammies with log ins and bastard kids atchall house. Keep raising them to the best of your ability, but know if they do one misstep it will be blamed on your single mama ass household.
According to this blog of course.
*goes to see how many folks downed on the arrested for being…a single mama
I didnt have to scroll far.
Yeah, I feel you. The experience can be daunting if youve never been in trouble with the law before. However, some, if not, most counties in GA outsource their traffic ticket “probation” to private companies. So the “officers” there can arrest you, but only if they have filed a warrant, which usually takes a good 4-5 months of not paying or showing up.
I messed around and didnt pay fast enough one time, and they dragged me back to court….Im so glad i had the money at that time, because the dude in front of me didnt, and the judge put his ass right in jail too.
Good Morning Roses and Happy Mother’s Day.
Hope you all had a wonderful day.
God bless you sis.
I’m very much human. My sympathies are limited to those that don’t put themselves in bad situations.
A crime is a crime no matter how small. You can stay out of jail by not committing them with a few exceptions.
Say it loud!
Lol, that’s not what he said.
?????
I agree with you partially.
It would be ideal if people who needed to change their lives and behavior had that epiphany that the are making poor life choices, but let’s hope she’s one of the few who changes because someone helped her.
For sure! If you can’t be motivated to be an upstanding productive member of society for yourself then do it for your children.
Whom did Steve slip up and insult?
Don’t tell me someone in Monique’s corner put the hoo doo on Steve.
I understand where you are coming from. My mom left her 4 children. 3 were by 2 different men and I was the only one from my father. But he loved my mom and accepted her and my brothers and sister. I was 5 years old and she dropped me off to my kindergarten class. I remember it like it was yesterday. My father raised us as she left to pursue her singing career. Long story short. We all turned out great. When our father died my sister who had to raised us asked the question, “Why momma couldn’t died?” I busted out laughing and hugged my big sister…..And I told her that we are going to be okay. My mom have lived a rough life and it shows today…..We all love our mother but we just feed her with a long wooden spoon….She really damage our brothers…..they married controlling women….I can go on for days….But our Mom made up her MIND TO DECIDED to leave us…..She is reaping for what she did…..
I’m glad you turned out well. I’m glad you all had your father to love and raise you all.
??????
??Thank you. You also. ??
I love this.
We can hope, but I see a pattern of poor decisions. If having 3 children she can’t afford wasn’t enough to stop her from having a 4th, l doubt bailing her out of jail will help her see the light.
True. The only way to change some people would be to start all over again and that can’t be done.
Sadly another generation has to suffer because someone was probably victimized as a child and no one helped her obtain the therapy that she needed.
