President Donald Trump kicked off his re-election campaign with a MAGA rally in Orlando, Florida on Tuesday. Before he departed for Florida, he took questions from reporters.
One of the reporters, White House correspondent April Ryan, asked the president if he would apologize to the “Central Park five” for calling for their executions.
Trump was confused by Ryan’s question. “Why do you bring that question up now?” he asked her. He was apparently unaware that he appears in a new Netflix film “When They See Us” in which he called for the death penalty for the teenagers.
“You have people on both sides of that. They admitted their guilt,” Trump replied, referring to the forced confessions from the Black and Latino males, who were then ages 14-16.
The five boys from Harlem recanted their confessions at trial, but they were convicted of raping and assaulting the then-28-year-old female jogger in Central Park in 1989. Their convictions were later overturned after another man confessed to the rape and assault.
The five men – Raymond Santana, Kevin Richardson, Antron McCray, Yusef Salaam and Korey Wise – received a $40 million settlement for wrongful conviction in 2014.
Trump was outraged over the settlement. He took out full page ads in four NY newspapers, calling for the return of the death penalty, saying that “criminals of every age” who raped the woman in Central park should “be afraid.”
It isn’t clear if Trump knew that the four men were exonerated by DNA tests that proved they did not rape the jogger.
In an op-ed published in the New York Daily News in 2014, Trump called the settlement a “disgrace.”
“My opinion on the settlement of the Central Park Jogger case is that it’s a disgrace. A detective close to the case, and who has followed it since 1989, calls it “the heist of the century.”
Settling doesn’t mean innocence, but it indicates incompetence on several levels. This case has not been dormant, and many people have asked why it took so long to settle? It is politics at its lowest and worst form.”
Trump has not changed his opinion on the subject of the Central Park 5 in three decades. “These young men do not exactly have the pasts of angels,” Trump said in 2014.
Last year, TheGrio.com reported that Trump tweeted, then deleted, the question: “what were the men doing in the park, playing checkers?”
Trump refuses to apologize now even if it means his stance will continue to alienate the Black community.

Revisited why? The kids were later exonerated and compensated (though granted no amount of money can make up for lost freedom). Why not instead “revisit” the many other suspicious cases in which innocent suspects are still behind bars? I’m sure they’d love for people to spend energy on their cases instead.

The defendants could not have been sentenced to capital punishment since it was not an option at the time of the crime, and the U.S. Constitution bans ex post facto laws.
Additionally, when Trump was asked about the ad in May 1989 on Larry King Live, CNN claims he stated that he only supported the death penalty for adults — which would have excluded the Central Park Five because they were all between the ages of 14 and 16.

The prosecutor could have chosen to retry at that point, but the teens had already served out their sentences. This was one statement made by McCray (part of a 34 minute confession) who was identified the night of the attacks by a boy (not one of the five) as the one who committed the murder (at that point it wasn’t known who the actual victim was and that she was alive). To be clear, none of the 5 ever said they raped the woman, only that they were involved in the attack in some manner.

I saw the Ken Burn’s documentary and watched their confessions. They were being coerced, as they claim and its clear by quite a few things. Corey is asked who raped her first, at one point he says Raymond and at another point he says Steven. As he is being asked “how did she get from point A to B” ….he responded “they probably….” which makes it clear that he doesn’t know, he’s guessing…. and the D.A. strictly address his use of the word “probably” and asks him again, where he then says “he saw” what he had just finished saying “probably happened”.
Correct yourself on this “they got off” deal, because they all did their time. Corey was the last one to get out and got out after serving 13 years. He didn’t “get off” on anything. What the EVIDENCE did do in their favor was exonerate them of the crime. How dumb is it for you to claim they raped somebody that you yourself are saying had no DNA evidence of them on her. Not only that, the police confiscated the boy’s soiled clothes from that evening and the soil from the crime scene wasn’t on them, so stop telling people they were there, based purely on a confession that they have all said were the statement the police forced them to make.
Their confessions don’t even match each other. Who raped her first? Who drug her body? Who hit her in the head? What did you do? What did he do? …one confession was not consistent with the next, nor what was evident at the crime scene. However, what was consistent with the crime scene was the confession of the actual rapist who’s DNA was present at the scene.

Again, the police didn’t know about the jogger yet. (It’s not surprising that the boys thought she was dead: Her doctors didn’t expect her to live through the night.)
Over the next few days, five teenaged boys gave detailed confessions about the attack on the woman, as well as the other attacks. All five made their confessions in the presence of their parents or guardians.

I just don’t think it should have ended there. Especially not for Corey who was stabbed in jail. Jails are corporately owned and should not be protected from inmates suffering injuries in their care. There is no evidence that police forced them to make any confessions. All of the minors who requested parents present had them present for their confessions. None of the individuals confessed to personally raping the woman, but all did confess to being present or participating in holding her down and beating her. They also all named each other as being present and having participated in some manner to her rape or beating.
I don’t see that the DNA evidence exonerated them of anything. Reyes semen was found on her sock and on the ground. That no semen from any of the boys was found is not exoneration of anything other than they didn’t ejaculate which none of them confessed to. Now, if one of them had confessed to raping the woman and ejaculating and no semen was found, then there would be a reasonable argument to be made for that statement being coerced. Again, none of the 5 confessed to raping the woman, but several of the 5 put the finger on one or more of the other guys as having raped her. Others just said they held her won or beat her and her injuries were consistent with those confessions.
I don’t know if one or more of them actually penetrated her, but I think you’d do yourself a favor by reading what the doctors who treated the victim said about her injuries. They said she had palm and finger print marks (consistent with being held down and restrained) on her thighs, calves, ankle and behind the knee. They stated that these injuries were consistent with multiple people attempting to hold her down which is what several of the teens confessed to doing. Reyes said he was by himself hit her with a blunt object (tree limb) knocking her out before he raped her. IE, she was unconscious. Reyes also told an inmate about the rape, but stated he was drawn to the area by a womans screams and yelling and that he found her already beaten and decided to rape her (ie, he’s given different versions of the story). This version of events would fit with what the teens confessed to.
As for the Burns documentary, I think this quote from those who put that documentary together is pertinent. Understand that the statute of limitations on the crime had expired and Reyes could not be prosecuted for anything he said about that event.
Reyes had claimed that he found religion while incarcerated, and that when he met Kharey Wise again in 2002, he could sense the other man’s pain. Sarah Burns and David McMahon, who co-wrote and directed “The Central Park Five” with Ken Burns, and who interviewed Reyes during filming, had several other theories. One was that Reyes was hoping get a
transfer and special privileges in prison. “He told us…that he wanted to help them,” says Burns. “I do think he’s a sociopath; a lot of what he said to us felt like he was telling us what we wanted to hear.” The most compelling reason, they found, was that Reyes just wanted to be noticed.

You’d do yourself a favor by watching Corey Wise’s full confession on YouTube. It’s 2 hours long. I watched it. His story contradicts itself many times and he’s visibly afraid to the point of wiping tears out his eyes at certain points. He’s clearly being persuaded to say he witnessed events he did not. You’ll hear him guessing. You’ll hear the D.A. leading him to rephrase his confession to say he actually heard and saw things that he initially says probably happened. Their confessions don’t match each other. They all say they didn’t rape her, and they all say that each other did. While they are all so seemingly cooperative to implicate the other (in an attempt to spare themselves), none of them are implicated Reyes, who is the only one the evidence proves was there, who as you noted did ejaculate on her at the scene. Now, why do you think that is? Could it be that they didn’t know he was there? Could it be they didn’t know he was there, because they weren’t there and the cops didn’t give them Reyes’ name as being at the scene as they had done with the other boys?
Corey also had a “he did it / I didn’t” type of confession and they made him go back to claim more responsibility for the rape. How do I know this?
They tried to cover their asses by asking him (with officers present in the room) if an officer asked him to make his 2nd confession, to which, of course, he replied no. At the end he starts rambling about the things that was going through his mind that made him ask for a second confessional. Though he tried to be convincing that it had nothing to do with cops putting him up to it and he said things like “he didn’t think it was fair for him to not take the blame” ….at the tail end of it all, he says “I thought about cops screaming in my face, cursing at me, hitting me…” That’s all I needed to hear. THERE’S YOUR EVIDENCE THAT HE WAS FORCED, which had been completely ignored that cops were verbally demeaning and physically assaulting a minor with no parent, guardian, or attorney in the room when he made his statement and video confession.
It’s ridiculous that you think 14-16 year old were sexually and violently aggressive enough to gang rape a woman and didn’t ejaculate at the scene, and then for the DNA evidence of the one who actually raped her not being mentioned in any of the 5 confessions, and of the 5 accused not only was none of their DNA at the scene. The scene wasn’t on any of them, but somehow in your mind none of this is enough to exonerate them of the crime, nor enough to give their claim that they were being coerced any credibility. SMH.

You allege they beat her and yet not one iota of DNA was found implicating any of them? That’s not at all believable.

DNA collection and testing was in its infancy in the late 80’s and wasn’t often used in criminal cases. In this particular case they did use semen samples from the crime scene. They also used hair fibers that were found on clothing of a couple of the boys and results were that it could be consistent with the victims hair. Later testing (in 2002) found that they hairs were not from the victim. The physical evidence used at trial was fairly scant. One of the 5 had scratches which he said initially that one of the arresting officers gave him, but on the the question being asked again he said, “the female jogger did it” . The main evidence used was partly their confessions of personal involvement and partly of their statements about what the others had done.
For those that believe these 5 were innocent of crimes that night, they would have to believe that the officers (both black and white), the detectives (both black and white) and the district attorney colluded to set them up and coerce their statements. I am not saying its impossible that this happened, but wouldn’t you think someone in the department would have spoken up about it? Or better yet, there were a dozen or more suspects (all black or hispanic) on the 7 different attacks (or attempted attacks) that occurred in central park that night that were interviewed and on 2 specific attacks (Loughlin and Meili) police narrowed their focus to 6 individuals. At the time, the jogger was in a coma and it wasn’t known what she saw or would remember about the events. No one had any idea whether attackers could be identified (including the attackers, some of whom thought the jogger was dead). So why would police focus on this specific group of 6 (charges in the jogger rape case were dropped against one in lieu of a guilty plea in the Loughlin assault case) and “coerce” statements from them of guilt if they didn’t have any idea who the jogger might identify?
As for a settlement, Bloomberg (mayor at the time) fought against the lawsuit for more than a decade and wanted the trial to proceed. De Blasio ran on a promise (to Sharpton for his support in the election) that he would settle the case and he won election and became mayor in 2014. The victims were seeking $250M and the case was settled by De Blasio (against the wishes of police and prosecutors involved in the case) for $40M.
They’re innocent. Move on. The serial rapist and murderer that actually perpetrated this crime and others similarly (of which there was little if any national media attention) admitted he acted alone, as he did in those other crimes. There was a rush to judgment that cost these men a significant portion of their lives.
If you’re interested in pursuing Murderers you can still pursue the last living perpetrator in the Emmitt Till case. Or you could join the FBI and help seek justice there!

What were they victims of? They all confessed to several assaults and being present or involved in raping the woman and named each other as being present. They confessed because they didn’t know at the time what the woman might testify to and thought they would get reduced sentences. When it was found that the woman was in a coma and eventually that she had no memory of what occurred, they recanted their statements.
the DA that vacated the verdicts didn’t say they didn’t commit crimes, only that the new evidence of a confession would have played a role in their trial and sentencing. He choose not to retry the cases because the sentences had already been carried out. He also stated that there was no evidence of wrong doing by police, investigators and attorneys that tried the case.
[korey] wise was a very troubled kid. He had a really crappy upbringing so its not all that surprising he was involved in the attacks that night in central park. There is little doubt he was involved in the attack on the woman. He offered to police that he held her down and grabbed her breasts. He told this to the sister of a friend who testified to that conversation at trial. He also told police that someone (not one of the 5) stole the joggers walkman. Interestingly enough, Reyes said in his confession 13 years later that he stole the walkman.

People with crappy upbringings aren’t automatically prone to mob styled violence. It just doesn’t seem real that a guilty kid would volunteer to take a trip to a police precinct with his friend. The idea that someone was allowed to testify “he told me…” who wasn’t a firsthand witness to the crime is ridiculous, as hearsay is generally inadmissible in court. One of those links sound like the videotaped confession. I heard the whole 2 hour taping and do not recall him mentioning a walkman. Only way I’m double-checking that tape is if you provide the exact marker (minute and seconds) that I’ll find what you’re talking about. The names he’s using in his confession, I believe are the names of the parties the police told him who were involved in the rape. He mentions a person by the name of Steven. I don’t know who he is, but they said “The Central Park” number was much bigger and it boiled down to “The Central Park 5”, so again the names he mentioned most likely belonged to one of them. For sure, it wasn’t Reyes he was referring to. They weren’t trying to pin this rape on him, so the boys had no way of knowing his name, as for the most part they didn’t even know each other by name and was only able to implicate each other because the police provided with the names, their pictures, and the narrative during their interrogation.
While hearsay testimony is not always accepted, its not accurate to say that the type of hearsay testimony that was entered in this case is not generally accepted. Here are the the first 2 conditions on federal rules allowing hearsay testimony:

(1) Present Sense Impression. A statement describing or explaining an event or condition, made while or immediately after the declarant perceived it.
(2) Excited Utterance. A statement relating to a startling event or condition, made while the declarant was under the stress of excitement that it caused.
I apologize for the incorrect citation on Wise’s recorded statement about the walkman. In one of the recordings ( I think it may have been Lopez’s), he mentions a walkman being taken from the male jogger, but it was tossed because it was broken. My attribution of Wise mentioning the walkman being taken from the woman comes from Reynolds (arresting officer of a couple of teens that night):
Reynolds counters that Wise told an NYPD detective named August Jonza soon after the arrests that he was groping the victim’s breasts when a teen known as “Rudy” stole the Walkman.
“Steven” was Steven Lopez. Lopez plead guilty to the attack on Loughlin in a plea to avoid prosecution in the Meili case (same with Michael Briscoe). Lopez gave extensive testimony with his father present and was adamant that he wasn’t part of the attack or present for an attack on the woman. Others admitted to being part of the attack on the female and of those that admitted to being part of that attack, most put “Steven” with them as an active participant.
No one mentioned the name Reyes in any of the interviews I listened to, but he was a teenager from the same area at that time. Most of the kids mentioned that they knew some of the teens in the pack and didn’t know others. They also mentioned that after the first few attacks, the groups split up. A smaller pack was involved in the attack on Loughlin (last attack before the female). A couple of inmates with Reyes have said that when he told them of the events, he said that he heard the screams of the jogger (all the boys said the woman was screaming and they shut her up) and thats what drew him to that area and that he found her alone and beaten which is when he did his thing. The fact that Reyes said what he did was by himself fits with none of the others mentioning seeing him in the attack on the woman. Also, Reyes mentioned hitting the woman with a stick and a rock which is consistent with some of her injuries (and some of the statements made by the other teens). But the woman also had several sharp object injuries which is something Reyes doesn’t mention. In the teens statements, several of them mention one of the boys who brought a knife with him (I think Santana). According to Wise, the metal pipe was his, but Yousef was the one that took it from his house.
After reading reports from officers, doctors, prosecutors and listening to most of the statements from the teens, I have a fairly high confidence that a group of 30 teens went into central park to commit violent crimes. At some point the group split up and 4-5 teens were the ones that encountered and attacked the female and that Reyes came along after they were done.
Another point about Reyes and his later confession. When Reyes was caught after a rape a couple of months after the central park event, he admitted to other rapes (5 total ) and a murder, but never mentioned the central park event. It seems odd that a man that has been described as an attention whore would be willing to admit to all these other crimes, but didn’t mention the crime that had received by far the most publicity. There doesn’t seem to be any doubt that he had raped the woman since his DNA was present, so why not mention it?
You can block it all you like, it doesn’t change the truth. Listen to the transcripts yourself. Read what black police officers said about the evidence they collected and interviews they conducted. The pack of teens all admit to taking part in various assaults that night and admitted to bringing weapons including a steel pipe and knife. They only backed out of their statements once it was known that the woman had no recollection of the events and their DNA didn’t match the semen found. Before that point, they all minimized their own role while spilling the beans on what others had done and their descriptions of the area and injuries matches what occurred. Two of the teens took cops to the scene in the day or 2 after the event. How would they know where it occurred if they weren’t involved? Several of the teens were arrested just outside the park, but in the general area of where the woman was assaulted (same latitude, but on the main road just west of the park).
One last thing, its been mentioned by more than a few in this thread that the teens were coerced and interviewed and gave statements without parents. This is completely unfounded. No one has ever provided a shred of evidence of coercion and all of the interviews I listened to were with a parent present with the exception of Wise who was 16 which mean a guardian didn’t need to be present. One of the 5 (Salaam) was interviewed without a parent, but he told cops he was 16 and provided an ID that showed he was 16 so they interviewed him. When his mother showed up, she said he was 15 and she wouldn’t allow him to be interviewed any longer.
The only thing the DNA results did was show that Reyes was involved in raping the woman. It does not mean that none of the others were involved in an assault and rape. Listen to the interviews of the boys. They all downplay their own role, but there were 6 or 7 names that continuously came up in the assault on the woman in the interviews of more than a dozen kids. A couple of boys mentioned a boy named “Tony” being part of the group as well but no one knew his last name or where he lived. Once Matias Reyes later admitted to taking part in the rape, some have suggested that the “Tony” being referred to was in fact Matias Reyes as “Tony” was one of the nicknames he went by. When Reyes was picked up for another rape later that same year (18 at the time), he told police he was living in a van in Harlem which is where the “gang” of 30-33 originated from. Reyes admitted to 5 rapes or attempted rapes and a murder in 1989, but he was never connected with the central park assault/rape until he made his admission 13 years later.
Witnesses testified to attacks carried out by a mob of boys that night in the park. The “five” were easily identified as being part of that group and admit freely to being part of it.
There were 6 other attacks (in addition to the woman) and none of them had any DNA tying anyone to the attacks (again, DNA forensics was in its infancy in the late 80’s and not the science it is today), but its clear the pack of teens was involved in all of them. The attack on the woman was mentioned by nearly a dozen witnesses. Five of the witnesses stated their own involvement though each down played their own role. That the same 7 names out of the 30+ were the ones mentioned over and over in the attack on the woman seems to be a pretty good indication of who was involved. There were 3 separate trials for these 7 broken up by age and involvement. Two of those 7 got lucky to get plea deals involving only other attacks because their trials were later and the female jogger as well as 2 other witnesses decided they didn’t want to testify before the third trial began. These boys did bad things that night and while I am willing to offer forgiveness for bad deeds done in ones youth, there is no way in hell these 5 should have gotten a dime out of this case. The city fought their lawsuit for nearly 12 years, but ultra liberal De Blasio cut a deal with Sharpton to help get him elected and he ordered the settlement to be paid instead of going to trial.
As far as Reyes’ actions go; trying to make sense of his final testimony verses what inmates are saying he said, and why he didn’t confess earlier to something we know he did is pointless. At this point, saying he was “apart” of something that he committed alone (according to the scientific evidence) is an incorrect representation of the event. Not because he said he did it alone, but because the scientific data solidified his confession. It wasn’t the other way around. They didn’t just take his word for it.
Dissecting any of the boys’ confessions and hearsay at the time of the assault, when we know they did not do all they said they and the others did and were (in fact) lying in their confessions, is redundant. Trying to figure out who played what roles in any of the attacks that occurred that evening, based on any of their confessions is pointless, even as it pertains to whether or not they were apart of any of the other violent attacks. What they said then can only be accepted as completely invalid, due to the element of coercion.
Just as the boys have said they don’t know each other, we don’t know which of them really knew Steve or what they really saw Steve do that night. The fact that you don’t believe Steve was innocent of the rape (he denies being apart of), because they all said he was there is mind blowing!!!! It shows me that you really don’t comprehend what REALLY happened at the precinct. Kevin said Raymond did it. Raymond say Kevin did it. Kevin and Raymond don’t even know each other. Corey says Raymond raped the woman first. Corey later says Steve raped the woman first. Corey really doesn’t know who raped her first. All Corey knows is the cops told him Steve and Raymond raped the lady and said he was there, and Corey’s not going home until he gives them a convincing statement implicating Steve and Raymond.
This thing you’re saying about a pole and her sharp injuries, I haven’t heard. The Ken Burns documentary states one of the boys confessed to stabbing the woman in her leg, but states she didn’t have a stab wound. As far as a pole, that again you’re saying you’ve heard about in a “confession” that we have to throw away completely, it must not have had anything to do with the crime scene of the rape, because again, the scientific data (which exceeds just semen) does show any evidence of the boys in the markings at the scene and their DNA isn’t on the scene, and nothing from the environment was on their clothing, so eliminate the entire image from your mind of them ever being in that specific spot where the rape attack occurred, because they weren’t there and they didn’t see what happened. The city settled the case, not because they were in a good mood and wanted to give away money that day, but because they agree that not only did they NOT rape the woman, they weren’t accomplices to the rape, either. This “belief” that you have about Steve and what others believe about the boys that they persist to believe the boys were somehow apart of it due to their confessions and hearsay, doesn’t make what you and others believe a fact.
The first part is where you and others have made a mistake. The DNA evidence does not prove Reyes alone attacked and raped the woman. The scientific evidence proves that Reyes raped the woman, not that no one else did. Rape can and often does occur with no identifiable DNA evidence. According to a 2018 article in the National Institute of Justice, “Based on NIJ’s SAK-related projects (see exhibit 1), DNA profiles that were of sufficient quality for CODIS upload were obtained in only 38 percent of more than 7,000 SAKs submitted for DNA testing”. Yes, you are reading that correctly, in 2018, only 38% of collected samples from sexual assault claims were considered viable enough to be put in the national DNA database. Also understand that while the teens admitted to various activities during her attack, none individually admitted to penetrating her and no witness stated anyone ejaculated (some admitted to feeling her up and said others had gotten on top of her). If they didn’t ejaculate, there likely wouldn’t have been detectable DNA evidence with 1980’s technology.
I disagree that we know they did not do all they said they did. Cite for me one statement they made that you believe can show to be false. Again, the DNA evidence of the semen positively identifies 1 person who was involved, not that it exonerates anyone else. We know without a doubt that 30-33 teens entered the park as a mob to terrorize that night. There were 7 guys who were either identified as ring leaders or leaders on specific attacks by more than a dozen witnesses total. OF those 7, 5 (along with others outside the 7) gave statements implicating the other 7 in the attack and rape on the woman. One of the 7 refused to give any statements and another, Lopez who was called the ring leader by most of the others, said he had nothing to do with the woman. Several of the witnesses mentioned a rape even before police knew there was a woman who had been raped. Two of the 5 positively identified where the assault/rape occurred and all positively identified where the other 6 assaults/attempted assaults occurred that night. Given the path they took in committing the other 6 attacks and where several of the teens were picked up by police, the location of the attack of the woman fits very well in implicating these 7.
I would argue that most of the statements of the 7 identified as attackers on the woman are self serving and given their pledge to “not snitch” on the deeds of the evening, I believe they told of much less than they actually did and saw. I think the only reason they gave anything up was because of the “coercive” tactic of police to promise them leniency if they told the truth. Speaking of coercion, I have yet to see someone claim coercion then identify a single instance of coercion by police or prosecutors in the interviews and statements. And why were their statements made by teens about a rape and a murder before police even knew a female jogger had been attacked and left for dead?
The boys did not say they didn’t know each other. They said they didn’t know all of the 33 and may have only known some of them fairly well. But, in each of the interviews, they mentioned who they knew and recognized and how they knew them and in statements either identified individuals by first name or by clothing they were wearing. My guess is, when the groups split up, they split up with who they knew and a smaller group of 8-10 assaulted the jogger Loughlin and the female.
I don’t know why you are stuck on DNA evidence. Again, DNA evidence wasn’t even allowed in court rooms until 1987 and many precincts just didn’t collect evidence like hair, skin, etc from crime scenes. They collected semen that ended up matching Reyes. That they didn’t have DNA from the teens matching any of the 7 crimes that took place that night has no bearing on what crimes they actually committed. Tell me about all these markings at the scene that exonerate the teens. How many sets of footprints were there? Several of the boys had mud on their clothing. There was only one attack that occurred that night where the victim ended up in mud. One of the boys had scratches on his neck/face. When asked, he initially said it was from his arrest. When confronted with the lie, he offered that the scratches came from the lady. Again, this was before he was even a suspect in any rape/assault.
All of the police, prosecutors and doctors are quite certain that Meili was assaulted by multiple individuals. You can continue to believe that several dozen police officers (black and white) decided to target and frame 7 teenagers (not all 33) because of race, or you can believe that teens who entered the park to terrorize people and who knocked out and assaulted several others that night also were involved in the rape/assault of the woman. You believe their statements were coerced and completely made up (not sure if you believe that about all the attacks, or just the one on the woman) where I tend to think their statements were self serving and they tried to implicate others in what they saw while downplaying their own role (not just the attack on the woman, but the “self serving nature” was consistent in the other attacks as well).
What each of us believes is based on what facts we think we know. I feel I have a pretty good grasp on what occurred that night based on witness statements and interviews of police officers. Let me ask you this. What role do you think the teens played in the other 6 attacks (or attempted attacks) that evening? Do you believe they did anything illegal? Do you believe them when they said they attacked Loughlin and beat him unconscious with one person using a steel pipe that Yousef brought from Wise’s house? If you don’t believe they did it, who do you think committed those crimes? If you do believe they viciously beat a random guy, what makes you think they wouldnt’ do the same to a woman? IT seems you are stuck on the DNA evidence, but again, there was no DNA evidence of their involvement in any of the attacks that night. IF this attack had occurred in 2019, I’d be more skeptical of the lack of DNA evidence, but again, the attack occurred when DNA evidence didn’t play the role in investigations in 1989 that it does today. Heck, the DNA analysis done on hair samples were found to be consistent with the womans hair in 1989, but in 2002, the tests were inconclusive. DNA collection and testing just wasn’t as reliable or at the forefront of investigations back then.

Korey is an invalid and honestly was probably near the threshold of being incompetent for standing trial. He identified 2 people as having taken part in the assault and rape that other witnesses also identified in taking part. Yes its clear that only 1 of the 2 could have gone first, but that he confuses which one went first is not evidence of coercion of a false statement.

Furthermore, it’s not credible. …and when the kid explains in his reasoning for requesting a 2nd interview that of all the things he thought about, that led him to ask for the 2nd confession, he said he thought about cops screaming in his face, cursing at him, and hitting him. If you had to think about somebody bullying you …screaming, cursing , and hitting you as a reason to confess ..that’s coercion, not confession. The whole session of questioning was VIDEO Taped. I think we can all agree they did not rape the woman. They (along with many other misguided youth) did however participate in many crimes of assault and robbery on that same night. The ONLY reason the judge dismissed those charges is because they had already served their sentence, another person acknowledged he did the rape and the original charge of rape prejudiced the jury. At NO TIME have they stated they were innocent of the robberies and assaults. Just the rape.

This is a ridiculous outtake. Prosecutors must know exactly what a witness saw, not what they think probably happened because in court a witness cannot testify to what they think “probably” happened. she is very clear to direct him to state exactly what he saw or did. she didn’t say tell me you saw someone do something, she says tell me exactly what you saw. lawyers do this with every witness in any case they work, criminal or civil. I was party to a civil case and had a deposition from an opposing lawyer, meetings with my lawyer and testimony at trial. In every case, they didn’t want to know what I thought about something, they only wanted to know exactly what I did or what I saw someone else do. Otherwise the opposing attorney objects with “speculation” and the questioning is worthless. Its not called coercion, its called nailing down exactly what facts a witness is aware of.

The only second interview I’ve listened to was one from Wise where he said he wanted to change his story because it wasn’t the truth before, that he wanted to own up to some of the things he did and was scared earlier because he had never been through anything like this before. He was asked specifically if anything detectives did or said had anything to do with changing his story and he said no that he just wanted to tell the truth. Maybe you are referring to an interview I am unaware of.
Korey has a mental deficiency. there is no question about that. But again, whether he is confused about who went first, or who went second isn’t terribly relevant and not a statement he was asked to lie about (ie, coerced). Who he saw attacking and raping the woman is. I’ve not seen any evidence that any of the witness statements were coerced in any manner. The district attorney and his team who chose to vacate the convictions of the five have said they found no evidence of coercion in the investigation and prosecution. The only people claiming coercion were the five, but they have failed to provide any evidence of it. again, nearly a dozen witnesses gave statements on the involvement of the assault and rape by the 5. Not all statements were in perfect agreement, but they were mostly consistent on which individuals were involved. Two of the 5 led police to the location of where the attack occurred. Others described in detail injuries she sustained to her head. another told police the scratches on his neck were from the woman (before police even knew there was a female victim). then of course are the medical records of her bruising on her thighs, calves, ankle, back of knee which doctors said were consistent with multiple attackers. There are just too many statements and too much evidence of these guys being involved and even their own statements, where they were clearly trying to minimize there involvement, had them witnessing or taking part in the attack.
We (universal) are left to believe 1 of two things. police and prosecutors selected and railroaded 7 of 33 individuals that went into the park that night, or the evidence pointed to these specific individuals. I think the latter is much more likely and believable based on the statements and evidence.
not sure why my post was deleted, but I said myself that the 7 (7 were charged in the assault and rape on the woman) had lied plenty of times in their statements. One clear example is most of the 7 say lopez was a main aggressor in the attack and rape, yet lopez says that while he was a witness/participant to the other 6 attacks, he had nothing to do with the woman. either all witnesses are lying or lopez is lying with the latter being the most likely.
again, my concern is about coerce statements that were false as in they were forced to say something they knew wasn’t true, not something that was a faulty recollection or confusion because witnesses are not going to remember things exactly.
so which of these statements do you think are true or false
1) 33 kids (including the cp5) went into the park as a “gang” to cause trouble.
2) the cp5 were involved in most or all of the other reported attacks that evening, including assaults that left 2 people unconscious.
3) None of the cp5 had anything to do with an attack on the female jogger
4) all the witnesses who made statements about members of the 5 who made statements about seeing them assault and/or rape the woman were lying because they were coerced into lying.
5) all of the unsolicited statements made by teens about who the murderers or rapists were before it was even known there was a female victim were lies or made up by cops.
6) None of the cp5 took part in any assaults that evening
You’re not thinking objectively. I could entertain this for as long as I believed that maybe you were (to some small degree). You, for whatever reason, choose to stick by a side that says he’s guilty and you’re reaching for pieces of confessions, hearsay, and testimonies to float your argument that they were apart of a rape, ignoring everything that is in favor of their innocence, and everything that also supports their claim of being coerced. That much is clear. I don’t know what you have invested in those who profit from their guilt, but I can’t and won’t help you that. It actually comes off as wicked to insist what you’re insisting at this point.
While nothing you’ve said is proof of what you say it proves …that “you think really happened,” they have science on their side. Me, I believe they’re all innocent. I believe the cops coerced their statements, their confessions, including Corey’s second confession interview. I accept Reyes’ confession as being the truth of what happened to her that night and I have no interests in a belief that he left out any details of other parties to the crime. I accept the scientific evidence that validates his statement, and I accept the city exonerating them of the crime and settling with them. Period.
My investment is only in the truth.
Here is what you don’t understand. You are more than willing to accept Reyes version of events from 13 years after the crime, when there were no repercussions (statute of limitations expired) and only something to be gained from providing this information (he received a transfer that he was seeking possibly to get away from Wise whom he had a fight with previously), yet you ignore the dozen or so witnesses that gave statements contemporaneously with the crime. For what its worth, I think much of what Reyes and the witnesses implicating the 7 could both be true. Again, as Reyes told at least 2 other individuals, the woman could have been beaten up when he found her (heard screams and headed that direction) and decided to have his own fun with her and that explanation fits just fine with all the other witness statements.
None of us knows with certainty what happened and like in many criminal cases, witness statements are used to help piece that together. Again, anyone can believe one of two things in these dozen witness statements. Either police/prosecutors took place in a deliberate scheme and within hours coached a dozen plus witnesses on details of crimes that occurred that night targeting only 7 of 33 teens that entered the park in gang like fashion that night, or you believe the witnesses actually saw things that occurred and on their own were able to identify 7 individuals that took part in those crimes.
Again I ask which statements you believe to be true:
– 33 teens entered the park as a group that night looking to create some havoc
– 6 other assaults/attempted assaults were carried out by various individuals in that group.
– members of the central park 5 (and others Lopez and Briscoe) assaulted a bum, knocking him out cold
– members of the central park 5 (and 2 others Lopez and Briscoe) assaulted a jogger, leaving him unconscious and bleeding profusely.
– none of the central park 5 took part in any assaults that night
– none of the other 33 in the gang of teens committed any assaults that night.
Yes, I believe with very little doubt that the central park 5 (and others) assaulted various individuals that night. I think there is some doubt as to exactly what each individual did, but that they were involved in some manner in each of the described assaults. I believe most of the statements from the dozen or so witnesses were of the self serving nature, attempting to minimize their involvement, not embellishment at the coercion of police. All the statements were prefaced with Miranda rights read and with parents present for the minors involved. I believe all of the hesitancy in their statements was indicative of fear over being labeled a snitch and getting themselves in trouble. In short, I believe the police that worked the case, the prosecutors that tried the case, the attorneys that discarded the verdict and the attorneys and police that fought the civil suit for a dozen years prior to De Blasio’s capitulation over the unverified claims of criminals looking to make a buck. I believe there are cases where police have planted evidence or coerced witnesses, but I no reason to believe this is one of those cases.
