Drivers in Atlanta couldn’t believe their luck when an armored vehicle door flew open, spilling thousands of dollars onto the roadway.

The incident occurred on Tuesday evening on I-285 near Ashford Dunwoody Road in Atlanta. A motorist recorded the wild scene as motorists pulled over on the Interstate and grabbed handfuls of cash.

A video uploaded to Reddit.com shows at least 14 cars and trucks parked along the shoulder. Dozens of people are seen picking up the cash littering the roadway and along the shoulder. The armored truck was not seen in the video.

“I saw a bunch of paper floating around in the road and everybody pulling over on the shoulder, and as I got closer I noticed it was all just cash,” one the driver told WSB Radio.

The AJC reports the armored vehicle was heading westbound on I-285 near the Ashford Dunwoody Road exit when a side door flew open and cash spilled everywhere.

Drivers scrambled to collect the loot that littered the roadway in what was described as an “isolated cash storm.”

The drivers were long gone – as was most of the cash – by the time Dunwoody police arrived to secure the scene around 8 p.m. Police recovered only $200 of the lost cash.

But, as the saying goes, “Nothing in life is free.”

They’re going to have to give the cash back, according to Sgt. Robert Parsons, who said his department took down the license plate numbers on the vehicles seen in the video. The drivers will face criminal charges if they don’t return the money.

“When you come into control of property that you know is lost or mislaid and you appropriate that to your own use, without returning it to the owner, certainly it is a crime,” he said.
