A Beverly Hills surgeon urged customers (and other women) not to panic after the FDA recalled textured breast implants.
Textured breast implants are popular with athletes, cross-fit trainers and yoga instructors because they grip the chest wall to avoid movement.
The Food and Drug Administration announced the nationwide voluntary recall of textured breast implants after multiple women were diagnosed with breast implant-associated cancer.
Allergen, the manufacturer of the Biocell textured breast implants recalled the products from suppliers due to the breast implant-associated anapestic large cell lymphoma (BIA-ALCL), a type of cancer that spreads to the lymph nodes in the armpits and around the body.
The FDA took action after a spike in new cancer cases and 24 deaths since earlier this year.
The recall caused panic among millions of women who don’t know whether their breast implants are part of the nationwide recall.
Beverly Hills and Los Angeles-based plastic surgeons tell The Hollywood Reporter there’s no need to panic, since textured breast implants are uncommon in the U.S. But if women aren’t sure, they should contact their plastic surgeons.
Plastic surgeon Dr. Robert Cohen, of Emerage Medical in West Hollywood, tells THR that ALCL is “extremely rare” and has a greater than 90 percent cure rate with a surgery to entirely remove the implant and scar tissue.
Women who flew to the Dominican Republican (or other countries in Europe or South America) for cheap breast implants have reason to worry.
