Teena Marie’s autopsy was completed yesterday, but Los Angeles County Coroner Ed Winter says her cause of death remains unclear.
According to the Atlanta Journal, investigators say the 54-year-old R&B singer’s autopsy results revealed no signs of trauma. This conflicts with rumors that Marie suffered several fractured ribs from a fall during a seizure she had weeks before she died.
Marie’s daughter, Alia Rose, found her mother’s body in their Pasadena home one day after they celebrated Rose’s 19th birthday.
There were reports that Marie died in her sleep after suffering a grand mal seizure. But there are people who experience seizures every day and they don’t die.
Also unclear is why Marie had seizures in the first place. Did she have epilepsy or were the seizures drug induced?
Winter said no illegal drugs were found in the family’s home where Marie died on December 26. But police removed a bottle of Valium from the scene. Valium is often prescribed for people with anxiety, panic attacks and to control seizures.
Marie reportedly stopped taking the drug due to its serious side effects, which include drowsiness, fatigue and constipation.
Teena Marie’s planned concert appearance on New Year’s Day at the Fox Theater in Atlanta will instead be a tribute to honor her career. Scheduled performers include MAZE and Frankie Beverly, along with Johnny Gill and Stephanie Mills.
Tickets can be purchased online or at the Fox Theater box office. Refunds are available at the point of purchase.
Wow – May her soul rest in peace and may her daughter’s will remain strong!
My co workers mother randomly started having seziures in her 40s so it can happen.
I
for her daughters strength during this trying time. I feel extra sad when only childrens parents die young/early. She is a pretty girl.
Anybody see Teena Maries Unsung?
RIP Lady T. I hope that the family can find peace during this trying time.
The uncertainty must be extremely difficult. My thoughts and prayers are with her family. One of my constant prayers is that I am able to see my babies make it to adulthood. The absence of a mother has to be great. Everyone call your mom today and tell her you love her!
I love her voice. This is horrible.
RIP
When they said there was no trauma they meant no trauma that lead to her death. Last month’s broken ribs didn’t lead to her death so that is not what they were talking about. They are not going to tell you every broken bone the women ever got in her life when trying to determine the cause of death.
Alia Rose sure is a beauty. God bless her…losing her mom at such a young age. And I don’t think it has ever been revealed publicly (not that it is anyone’s biz) who this young lady’s father is…but whoever he is I hope he steps up cause she is gonna need him now.
SOOOOOOOOO SAD!!! I COULDN’T IMAGINE MY MAMA NOT BEING HERE
So sad….Teena will truly be missed!
Candi you betta werk that new pic girl!!!

I have and its sad. She pawned her prized guitars for money at bad/low points in her life.
I am a HUGE fan of this woman’s music…HUGE.
Sandra! Cut it out. They didn’t find Valium in her home, they found seizure medication and herbal remedies that she had started taking as a substitute for the seizure meds that had serious side effects. What are you trying to get at with this story? There are plenty of facts out there. Why are you making things up?
Why does it seem as if some people (not necessarily Sandra) want Teena’s death to be something other than natural causes? Some of the comments on other blogs were making me sick to my stomach.
Not every celebrity death calls for this kind of speculation.
i’m tryin yvonne
This is post is too sad, im leaving
RIP TM
I hate to tell yall this…and I am gonna piss some folks off…but it was kinda a known fact that this lady had fallen off the wagon so to speak more than once…and waaaay prior to her passing there was rumors about how whatever label she was with at any given time had to clean her up so she could tour and record every few years (kinda like how I told yall about Sade and her suspected heroin habit but nobody listened…)
So for once I can see why the media and blogs are suspecting drugs off the top.
I still can’t believe she’s gone. She is a legend with a beautiful voice that will be missed. RIP Lady T.
I pray that her close friends and family, especially her baby girl, remain strong.
@Kwall
I didn’t know any of that. I just thought people were throwing dirt just for the sake of it or to make the story juicier.
I don’t think her cause of death should even matter the WOMAN, MOTHER, ENTERTAINER, LEGEND LIVED FOR SO MUCH MORE!

Nah I think Sandra’s trying to say it too. Whatever she did in the past, there were no drugs in her house when she passed away. Her past drug use may have been a factor in her death, but I still don’t know why people are smearing her now because of things she did in the past.
@Kwall Yeah i’ve heard a few stories about her and drugs. My mom was telling me a horrible story about her and Rick James the other day so I can see where the speculation is coming from.

No matter what they find, she’s not coming back. RIP Mrs. Teena!!!

It don’t matter what the cause of death was, speculation should not be made, especially if no facts have been given out.
I was looking at an red carpet interview that she did in the mid-2000’s and the first thing that came to my mind was, “She is stoned out of her mind.” You could easily witness the slurring and she seemed very off balance. Also, if you are on siezure medication, you never stop it cold turkey. It will throw you into a siezure that could be potentially dangerous. I put my ownself in a bad situation once because I did not like how the siezure meds made me feel. I will not do it again.
RIP, Miss Teena. Your music will live on!
Sandra, You can pass away from a seizure. I have 2 family members who did so. One was 17, who had a seizure in our high school cafeteria during lunch and passed away. The other had one is his sleep and when his wife woke up he was laying beside her cold. he had recently had the surgery the year before to remove the portion of the brain that caused the seizure. It can happen, but most of all just pray for her daughter cause she is just a child, and to lose your mother so soon in life is devastating. She tweeted that she make her mom proud just last night. Sad!!
I hope her daughter has a great support system. She is only 19 years old, an only child and she has lost her mother. I lost my Mother at 20 but I had two kids, and my four siblings to lean on. It was still hard nevertheless. This is so sad. Sending prayers up prayers for her to get through this.
Rest in Peace
God Bless
This is so sad. I still cant believe it. I cant stop listening to Out on a Limb and Square Biz!!
My step-mother passed away from a seizure while she was sleeping this past April and a close friend of my mothers also passed away after having a seizure. It can and does happen.
