R&B singer Monica’s fans are in an uproar this morning after ‘American Idol’ host Randy Jackson seemed to diss the legend with his over-the-top praise for the off-key performance of ‘American Idol’ hopeful, Ashton Jones.
I didn’t catch the episode last night, but loyal reader Trevino Allen did, and he caught me up to speed with what happened:

Monica is a very talented vocalist but it is true she has yet to find her footing even after being in the record business for so long. She has a Good given voice and is careful not to let people manufacture her image so she will always be around. I do hope she gets a good record deal and puts out a project true to her instead of letting peope paint her in a box.

I dont doubt that Randy is a talented individual. However, as I’ve observed his judging over the years, he seems to be a person that doesnt really think before he speaks. His comments are often just off the dome with a lot of west-coast-wanna-be-cool jargin. Monica’s voice is for more powerful than this young lady. But not to take anything away from her, she still did a good job with the song.
umm… *looks down at belly* I want her body. I think all the judges were right, including Randy. He did not diss Monica, he said the truth. This chick could easily do crossover ‘pop’y records with her voice. Monica has a mature definitely R&B voice. I don’t see Monice’s voice/image going well with the cotton candy music that comes out these days, but I see this chick’s voice blending with that easily.

Have you ever heard someone who can really sing try to do someone else song and was disappointed because you’ve expected so much better from them. Because when that person sings their own songs, they can blow, but now that they’re trying to do someone else song, who don’t hear their whole potential in that song and that’s because they are doing a song that wasn’t meant for their particular voice. And that’s all Randy was saying. He was talking about that particular track, and that particular kind of style of music. He was just saying, that is not your field of expertise for your type of voice.

Im probably the biggest Monica fan on this site and I will be the first to tell you that I personally dont think Monica is a legend. Yes, Monica has had lots of success. Im not going to waste my time explaining it to some of you because you dont follow music (beyond listening to radio or what u see on tv) so its pointless. Although Monica may not be of legend status YET, she is a VETERAN. You dont remain apart of this business for 16 years by not delivering hits. Im sorry, u dont. Men lie, women lie, but numbers dont. Before you try and down play Monica’s success, check her resume. Ask Clive Davis why she has been signed to the SAME record lable family since she was 13 years old! The same lable your fav artist like Whitney Houston, Alicia Keys and Jennifer Hudson are signed to.
If you dont think her voice is nothing special, cool thats your opinion. However the millions of people who have bought her records and heard her songs on the radio do. Perhaps thats why Everything To Me stayed number 1 for soo many weeks. Or perhaps thats why Billboard named her the 24th most influential R&B artist over the past 25 years. I personally love the song, but do I think it was Monica’s best vocal or an indication of what she can and has done? No. More often than not, allot of Monica’s music is stuck in a box. Which is okay if your tryin to appeal to a certain demographic, i.e. black people who love r&b music. I do think going forward the goal is to broaden Monica’s appeal and hopefully Polow Da Don can assist with giving her records that reach a broader audience.

Monica is a very talented singer having seen her sing in person many times the girl can really blow!!!! It’s just said that today’s music industry is so caught up in sex appeal the actual talent. “Love All Over Me” was a BIG record for Monica and so was “Still Standing” I’m so happy that she is about to drop a new album this summer “New Life” so all you Monica haters fall in line..lmao….and yes I’m Monica’s biggest FAN!!!!
For me as a trained vocalist, I loved American Idol..I always thought Simon = the A&R coaching (spotting a star), Paula = boost their confidence & performance, & Randy = For his “ear” & overall artistry…now I find myself agitated b/c Jennifer Lopez is not known for her singing..she has the audacity to tell others they can’t sing or their voice isn’t big enough..that truly bothers me..in which Paula NEVER told someone that…I think Ms. Abdul knew she wasn’t known for her vocal chops aswell…I was hoping Mariah Carey would be a judge…sadly, JLO who has a “name”….the industry bothers me…& this is one that truly does…
I didn’t watch the show last night, but Randy was more then likely saying her range may be bigger then the song she chose… IE: if Monica was to sing a JLO or Ashanti song…get it? Some songs are mde for that one singer…look at Jodeci…Jojo vocals were crazy and the twin Dino from H-town “knocking the boots”…who can sing that song lol?

I seen it last night and he was referring to her voice being too big for the song. He also said he like it better when Monica sang it.
Were we watching the same show? Monica CAN sing. This chick butchered that song.
I love that song by Monica, however Monica is like one of those acts you might see on Unsung. She’s known, but not large. And I think he was saying she’s bigger than selecting a song from an artist that’s just known but not large. NOW, how’s she’s bigger than that, I don’t know. Because I’m still baffled over how this chick got put into the top 12 because just about every song she’s sung so far she’s been flat on. I don’t know what they hear that we don’t.

As for Idol itself I predict that Jacob Lusk will take the crown. His rendition of God Bless the Child gave me chills (its on youtube)
