The following email from loyal reader Jasmine D makes some very valid points about Beyonce being honored with the “Billboard Millenium Award” — an award that no one has ever heard of.
Is it any surprise that Billboard comes up with this dubious honor for Beyonce at a crucial time when both Kelly Rowland and Rihanna are eating her lunch?
Dear Sandra,
Let me start off by saying that I am a HUGE fan of your site. I visit it everyday and I absolutely adore you and your (hilarious) commenters =D.
But anyway, I don’t know if you heard or not, but apparently Beyawnce is going to be honored with the Billboard Millenium Award (whatever that is) at the 2011 Billboard Awards. I say, “whatever that is,” because (obviously, that is supposed to be a high honor to receive), however, prior to Beyonce’s nomination, you will find no other receiptients or even links to this award (Google it). It’s as if it never even existed. And, even if it did exist, out of all the living (and dead) legends we’ve witnessed in America (M.J., Prince, Tina Turner, Teena Marie, ect.), Billboard chooses an amatuer (compared to the decade long careers of the REAL legends) whose solo career hasn’t even spanned over a decade and who has created no classics or made any significant contributions to the music industry, as the recepient.
I put the link that I got the story from in the e-mail so you could read it for yourself, but after visiting numerous other websites and reading the comments, it seems like most of us (besides Bey’s delusional stans) are on the same page. It’s CLEAR that camel and his phony wife bought this award. RiRi is nominated for 18 Billboard awards this year, and being that Beyonce is the vindictive and jealous, talentless being that she is, it should come as no surprise why she would pay a pretty penny to get the attention back on her.
She hasn’t put out an album in two years, her recent single FLOPPED, plus she just isn’t iconic to begin with, so why now? Let me know what you think about it, but her motive is clear to me Sandra. Beyonce may have her stans and the other simple minded humans of the world fooled, but I’m not.

The award is mysterious no doubt. If it has something to do with her being the biggest or best artist of this millenium, its waaaaaaaay too early to be giving that out. It should come out at the end of the millenium. If they are talking about the last millenium B wouldn’t even be in the top 25. That being said, Kelly Roland is no match for B and she probably never will be. Rihanna is giving her a run for her money, but lets see how B’s next album sells. She will probably out sell RiRi as usual.

billboard awards are strictly sales and popularity its not like the other award shows where a board determines the winnner. having said that the only other front running women would have been gaga and britney which gaga is 2 new and britney has been off the wagon and got back on. beyonce is about the only female that consistently stayed relevant in last 10 yrs or so.

It’s standard in the industry for people to “pay” for certain awards and such. Movie studios pay millions of dollars each year campaigning for their movies to win Oscars, and I am sure money has switched hands in terms of Grammys, Golden Globes, etc. I am hardly a Bey stan but if she and Joe Camel bought the award, then good for them. Everything has a price these days.

People confuse “stealing” for being a smart business woman. Stealing would be taking full credit, and not including the writers name, and doing this WITHOUT their approval. EVERYONE wants to work with Beyonce. If you write a song and Bee uses it, you’re gonna catered it to fit her brand, and she’s gonna get credit. She is not the only one who does this. And she gives credit to all the writers and contributors.

On a BET interview given before the album even came out and before Irreplacable was even a single, she said he wrote it and all the dudes would be mad at him.
But Im talking about credits on the actually song listings. Like if you open the album and read who produced it, who wrote it, etc.

VERY TRUE..BLU! YES SHE DID GIVE NEYO CREDIT BEFORE THE ALBUM WAS RELEASED. @ Munchos……I’ve literally heard Neyo say the song was complete before she came on board. I already said she rearranged the vocals which would require some altering to the harmony and melody. Does not change the fact that she didn’t write shyt. She rearranged the song to suit her own singing patterns.

I googled it also. The reason why I googled it, was because when the information came out about the award, they were saying that Michael Jackson and Mariah Carey were also honored with this award. Really? Then how come I never heard of it. Then when you google it only Beyonce’s name came up. If you put Michael and Mariah’s name up with this award, nothing comes up. Now some newsites have retracted saying that Michael and Mariah received the award because they know it’s a bold face lie. The nominations for the billboard awards came out in late March early April, right around the same time she put out her new single. So if she were being honored for the award, why wasn’t that mentioned then as much as anything Beyonce does make news and that kind of news probably could of helped the sale of her single? The reason why is because the single is not doing well, Rihanna has been nominated for 18 billboard awards which is more than what Beyonce has ever been nominated for, and she wants the attention away from Rihanna and back on her. So they made up this award. Beyonce is very competitive. Billboard awards may not mean much to others but to a person that loves awards and trophies, it’s one more award to go after.
I don’t know why people spend sooo much energy hating on Beyonce. I don’t see half as much energy spent on other overhyped artists. Like, really, what is the deal?

When Beyonce was in concert she said “I wrote this song for all the women out there…” I don’t think she wanted people to think like “Yea I wrote this song all by myself…” She was just caught up in the moment, and she just said that…MEANWHILE in her album booklet, Neyo is credited as a songwriter. I hope people understand that when a song is written, it is sent to BMI, ASCAP and the copyright people in Washington to credit songwriters, and his name has been credited since day 1
