Our First Lady has only been in my native land for 3 days and already she has committed a major indiscretion by touching Her Royal Highness Queen Elizabeth II.
Someone should have explained this time-honored tradition to Michelle prior to their meeting: no one touches the Queen.
It was an awkward moment when the normally touchy-feely Michelle put her arm around the Queen. Shocked, the Queen raised her arm, lightly patted Michelle on the back, then quickly dropped her arm in a clear sign to Michelle to remove her arm, which Michelle did.
Even British children know that it is forbidden under royal protocol to touch the Queen. The Queen is not to be mollycoddled like she’s some feeble, helpless being. It’s considered an impolite gesture to violate the Queen’s personal space without her permission.
I love Michelle, but she stepped over a line that has traditionally been honored for decades by visiting dignitaries.
Sigh, what else can possibly go wrong over there?
