Bishop Eddie Long, the embattled pastor of New Birth Missionary Church, wasted no time responding to two of his accusers yesterday. Jamal Parris, 24, and Spencer Legrande, 23, are speaking out about their experiences with Long, despite signing a confidentiality agreement.
Apparently, they aren’t happy with the terms of the structured settlement they agreed upon earlier this year. They thought their $2 million settlements spread out over 20 years was a generous amount — until they started spending the cash and discovered that $100,000 doesn’t go a long way when you’re greedy and have extravagant tastes.
In a message to his congregation posted on the church’s website, Long wrote:

We have a long history of dutifully serving those in need in the local and global communities and we will continue to do so. We are committed to the calling of a strong, viable and relevant ministry of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
Unfortunately, we are in the media again and people are wondering what I am going to say. All I have to say is what we stated earlier. All parties involved decided to resolve the civil cases out of court. The decision was made to bring closure to this matter and allow us to move forward with the plans God has for this ministry.
I will continue to honor and abide by my commitment of confidentiality and restraint as it relates to the resolution of the civil litigation and will not be diverted from the important work of the ministry.

I attend church. However the members I fellowship with are all displaying that they follow the word of God. I’m not with them 24/7, but we are all on one accord spiritually. First and foremost we follow the sabbath on the 7th day. Most Christian churches refuse to go against the tide and hold worship services on the true holy day. That tells me all I need to know there. I am no Jehovah’s witness or Seventh Day Adventist or any of that, but if we can’t follow ten commandments I know it’s not the place for me.

I saw those 2 young men on TV and what I saw were 2 angry, broken men. Obviously they have been offered a lot more money than what New Birth paid out because they have no fear of losing what they won in the negotiations. Understood. And for the record I definitely believe in Good, Jesus, the Holy Spirit…the whole shebang. I’m a Christian (non-denomination) but I’ve been turned off of church for the moment. I think it happens to us all at some point but many are too afraid to admit it but for me it is what it is. I’m not an atheist or devil worshipper. God knows my heart and knows what’s up and he knows why I’m not in church at the moment. I just felt the need to express the way I felt with the SR fam.

For the average person just confessing to God should be enough, but he is a man of the cloth, which means he is held MORE accountable for his actions…this is stated in the bible. Thus, if he is maintaining an image as though nothing went on with these boys, when indeed it did, his congregation has a right to know who is leading them. @lovezoe I think as Christians you need to make right what you did wrong or make an attempt to if at all possible. I know I am a sinner saved by grace and I have fallen short and will again but I try my best daily to pick up my cross n live for him!!
@Jazzy I didn’t think you were athesit or a devil worshipper although if u were I wldnt have judged you. People are free to worship not worship whomever they like or don’t like. I haven’t ever been turned off from “church” per se BUT I did stop going for a short brief period a few yrs back because I felt I was only going out of habit and not to give honor and glory to God. As much at the congregation is trying to “Stand By Him” I promise if tomorrow he announced that he is planning a youth group trip… The bus for that trip would be empty….

lots of people have left the New Birth congregation since the scandal broke and word is that he’s relocating to Birmingham. if i were him, i wouldn’t have responded at all since he said nothing new or different from his first statement.
this situation isn’t dying down anytime soon and one person’s indiscretions (no matter how great they are judged by man – all sin is the same in the eyes of God) isn’t going to keep me from fellowshipping with like Christians from time to time in church. that’s the true purpose of church – to fellowship with like believers aka Christians; that can be two or more gathered in His name in a kitchen, elevator, etc. Labeling all churchgoers as sheeple, gullible, etc. is hypocritic because if you shun and disown every person who violates one of the Ten Commandments, you may as well hole yourself up and never speak to another living soul.
some of us go to church because we love the praise and worship which usually happens prior to the minister giving his sermon; there’s also the choir and supportive ministries within the church (marriage, singles, children’s, etc.) which have strengthened and supported the surrounding community for at least the past 20 years. Long is just the figurehead, not the end all be all for New Birth. the CHURCH (not Eddie Long individually) as a whole has done great things for the entire community and it’s sad all their hard work and good deeds will be forever tarnished by the actions of one man.

and NO, i am not a member but i did grow up in the South DeKalb community where he started and can attest firsthand to the hard work and sacrifice of New Birth members in supporting (financially and spiritually) the entire community. New Birth is the sole reason Stonecrest Mall was built; which also resulted in new housing developments, strip malls, etc. and those developments generated jobs and sorely needed income for the area surrounding the mall.
there’s a lot more that those on the outside wouldn’t know but as a longtime ATL resident, i can see past what one man did and not damn to hell all the members of the church for his misdeeds.

If you included Sunday worship or any other day of the week along with the Sabbath, then I could reasonably understand your statement. However, just your ability to display how you can get with someone’s father (Zoe’s I believe) in another blog and state (in your gravatar) that you love Jesus is also beyond me. I think you confused posts or bloggers. I know you said you won’t respond and that’s fine. I will clear something up for you. First…I am practicing celibacy. Have been for quite sometime now. If you lurk on the regular when people are going on and on about sexing this and that you don’t see me in the middle. Until God sends my husband I am content to raise my daughters.
As far as being a hypocrite, I think you were referring to my Colombian ex boyfriend I mentioned in the Zoe post. When I dated him I was not working on my walk with God. Not even close.
Also, that doesn’t take away from the fact that we are to worship with like minded people. The things I did previously I no longer do. Do I fall short still? Of course, but the CORRECT thing to do is what Daisy said. You admit your faults and make it right. That doesn’t mean constantly doing it over and over under the guise that we are all sinners and live under grace. When Mary was saved by Christ she was told to go and SIN NO MORE! She served him faithfully from then on out.
People kill me trying to only use a scripture here or there to justify serving half-way. I am far from perfect but I will admit to my shortcomings. I fellowship with people who understand the role of a bishop, observe the sabbath, and try to live as close to Christ as possible, etc. We go ever the entire bible, not just the standard verses I heard in the churches I’ve belonged to over the years. Church isn’t just about dressing up, swaying to music and hearing Jesus loves you. Our God is a God of love, but He also expects us to serve Him fully, no matter what. we are to live in the world but not be of the world.
I assure you my life has changed drastically since I decided to serve Him. That is the way it’s supposed to be and my life is nothing like it was before.
