President Trump thinks A$AP Rocky is ungrateful after the rapper refused to thank him for getting him released from a Swedish jail. The rapper was detained for over a month after a street fight with an Afghan migrant in June. He was released and allowed to return to the U.S. after President Trump made subtle threats to the Swedish government.
According to Vice.com, the U.S. president thought A$AP would personally thank him for intervening on his behalf after he arrived back on U.S. soil.
The White House claims Rocky’s team exchanged texts with the president’s people, then ceased all contact and refused to thank to Trump publicly or in private.
Trump intervened on Rocky’s behalf after American socialite Kim Kardashian-West and rapper Kanye West asked him to step in.
“Just spoke to @KanyeWest about his friend A$AP Rocky’s incarceration,” Trump tweeted in July. “I will be calling the very talented Prime Minister of Sweden to see what we can do about helping A$AP Rocky. So many people would like to see this quickly resolved!”
According to Vice.com, hours after Rocky got out of jail, the White House was expecting a public thank you from the rapper, or some sort of acknowledgment that Trump’s involvement was responsible for his release.
His manager started making excuses, according to Vice. He said the rapper was tired, and needed time to travel and rest. Within two days after he was freed, Rocky’s team stopped responding to text messages from Trump’s people altogether.
Rocky refused to even thank the president in private. That didn’t sit well with Trump supporters.
“All he had to do was do a two-minute call to say thank you,” said Cleveland Pastor Darrell Scott. “Rocky hasn’t even called us and said, ‘Hey, man, thank you guys. I appreciate it,’ in private. Just in private.”
