The girlfriend of Cleveland Browns defensive end Chris Smith was hit by a car on the side of a highway after Smith pulled over to fix a flat tire on his Lamborghini.
Petara Cordero, 26, died on Wednesday – just two weeks after giving birth to the couple’s first child, a baby girl.
Smith and Cordero were involved in a minor car crash after a flat tire caused the Lambo to spin out of control early Wednesday morning.
Smith pulled over to fix the flat tire, and Cordero stepped out of the vehicle on the side of the road.
She was struck and killed by another car after she walked into the opposite lane from the median and into oncoming traffic on the I-90 West in Cleveland, according to the Daily Mail UK.
Police say the driver, a 47-year-old woman driving a Mazda in oncoming traffic, admitted she had been drinking before she hit Cordero.
Cordero was taken to Cleveland Clinic Fairview Hospital, where she was pronounced dead on Wednesday.
She and Smith recently celebrated the birth of their daughter, Haven Harris Smith, just two weeks ago.
Cleveland police said no charges have been filed against the driver and toxicology reports are pending.

I agree. Drunk driving laws are way too lenient. I think for a first offense they should suspend the person’s license for a year and give them 6 months in jail. Second offense should be at least a 5 year suspension + jail time, and permanently revoke their license for the 3rd offense.
Once people start losing their license quickly for DUI, you’d see a lot more people calling cabs and Uber, instead of taking a chance drinking & driving.

This happened not far from the stretch of I-90 near my condo in Bratenahl. Here is what the local press said happened:
‘Smith and Cordero were heading west on I-90 near the West 140th Street exit ramp in his 2019 Lamborghini. Smith told police that a tire on his vehicle blew out, which caused the vehicle to veer left and strike the center median wall. Smith and Petara exited the vehicle and were standing on the north shoulder of I-90 West.
A short time later, the woman in a 2017 Mazda 3 approached the disabled Lamborghini. The Mazda veered to the right side of it, striking the open passenger side doors and then Cordero.’
They have reported nothing about her attempting to cross the highway.

The lady admitted she had been drinking but she hasn’t been charged yet because even if you’ve been drinking your blood alcohol level may be below the limit. She obviously knew they were going to check her blood alcohol level so she would have been stupid to say she hadn’t been drinking. If she was above the limit I’m guessing she’ll be charged, but maybe not if the gf was standing in the middle of the road. She could have been hit by anyone drinking or not if she was indeed in the road. If the driver wasn’t over the legal limit and the gf was standing in the road I’m not sure if she can be charged with anything.

Best way to handle this would have been to call AAA or whatever type of roadside-assistance you have, and stay in the vehicle till help arrives.
Tragic situation, but hopefully this will be a reminder to someone else who sees this, so they’ll know to handle the situation better if they’re ever in a spot like this one day.

I’m guessing that if the results come back under the legal limit of 0.08, she won’t be considered legally drunk but they’ll probably be able to charge her with driving while impaired.
But if they get a result over that, especially if it’s a lot higher than 0.08, they can hit her with more serious charges, like vehicular homicide or something like that.

She admitted to drinking because she knew they’d check her blood alcohol level but just because she’s been drinking it doesn’t mean she tested above the legal limit which is why she hasn’t been charged yet. If her test comes back below the limit then all they can say is that it was an accident the same way it would have been an accident if the person had not been drinking at all. There may be some reckless endangerment charge but someone who wasn’t drinking could get that kind of charge also in this kind of situation. Also, if Sandra’s write up is correct it stated that the gf was standing in the road. Anyone could have hit her, drinking or not.

I do not know what she was thinking or where she was going that day but my hubbie was not driving me anywhere with a two week old baby at home because he would insist I be home and I would have submitted to his concerns. When men are married there is a tendency to utilize critical thinking some moreso than others who are baby daddies. My hubbie was old school . Also the legalities of taking possession of her body, custody of the baby, all of this is up for grabs. Her family could sue him for wrongful death by using poor judgement in having her in the car now do you understand why I say I wish she were a wife. There is a difference legally.
More husbands should get second jobs like back in the day so these mothers can just chill and be home at least the first year.

Legally owning it doesn’t mean anything as long as he put his name on the birth certificate.
Foolish girl you don’t get it a name on the birth certificate ony certifies him as the father it has nothing to do with the child’s mother. Her parents or even a sibling can claim her body. that whole first year was a blur to me! i was “existing” and that was pretty much it! my mom stayed with us for the first two weeks.
they STAY getting hit in atlanta. remember the brother/sister duo who got hit changing a tire and they were in the striped area!
yeah, i think they were sticking out into the road. changing a tire in the CENTER is damn near impossible. the fact that they haven’t put a charge on yet makes me wonder.

good thing you recognized. we went through this with my sister. she made a bunch of life altering decisions between her last trimester and until my nephew was 1. my mother told her to stop but she just changed everything and messed up her life. like she left no stone unturned.
