Cardi B dug in her heels after the backlash when she claimed credit for paving the way for female SoundCloud rappers.
“I didn’t say I pave the way for female rappers but I deff gave the hood and women hope,” she tweeted on Wednesday, Oct. 23 [sic].
The 27-year-old rapper said she opened the door for male rappers to collaborate with unknown female rappers on their songs. Cardi said before she became a household name, rappers were hesitant to record a verse on her tracks because she wasn’t mainstream.
“Nikkas wasn’t collabing with female rappers and putting them in a shelf and not focusing on them. Not giving them proper attention. It seem like it was impossible for it to be more than one female rapper. These male rappers where not even takin Money from female rappers for a feature cause it seem far fetch for another woman to make it. I see so many artists collabing wit females now even.. Some that are not mainstream because I know they don’t want to miss out on the opportunity in case they make it cause trust and believe [a lot] of Nikkas I asked for features from when they see me they tell me “I shoulda believe” [Damn] I should have did the feature [sic].”
Cardi’s fans agreed, saying she made it possible for SoundCloud female rappers to get instant clout by hopping on the records of up-and-coming rappers.
One Instagram user wrote:
“She’s completely right there’s a lot of female rappers coming up right now that we never heard of and we’re still learning about them Cardi gave them big hope, there should be no reason for only a few mainstream female rappers to make it while there’s thousands of mainstream male rappers.”
