Ellen Page surprised no one by coming out as a female-to-male transgender in a lengthy message on Twitter.com Tuesday.
Page identifies as a “non-binary” person who is neither man nor woman. Page’s pronouns are “he/they”.
It’s unlikely that Page will get many roles playing a non-binary he/they, so the 33-year-old Canadian will continue to play superhero Vanya Hargreeves, a woman with the ability to turn sound into energy, in The Umbrella Academy on Netflix.
A source told Variety: “Vanya is a cisgender [heterosexual] woman whose superpower involves unleashing force through the use of sound. There are no plans to change the character’s gender.”
That didn’t sit well with some in the LGBT+ community who support Page’s gender identity, but say it’s either all or nothing.
One Twitter user wrote: “I am so proud of Elliot Page for transitioning and becoming a beacon of hope for humanity. That said, now that Page is a straight man he is officially an oppressor and deserves nothing but our contempt.”
