Days after rap legend DMX died, rumors spread that Jay Z and Beyonce purchased his masters for his 15 children.
However, DMX’s family says the rumors are not true.
DMX, real name Earl Simmons, died a week after he allegedly overdosed on drugs. He was 50.
Rumors swirled that Jay Z and his wife, Beyonce snapped up the late rapper’s master recordings for $10 million as part of a lucrative deal.
Streams and downloads of DMX’s songs soared after his death. A total of 75.7 million audio and video streams were counted on April 9 and 10, WENN.com reported.
Rumor had it that Jay and Bey planned to split the proceeds from the streaming sales with DMX’s 15 children.
But the late rapper’s family members shot down the rumors.
“No one has bought Earl’s masters,” the family said in a statement to Billboard.
The family also urged fans to be aware of anyone selling merchandise to raise funds for DMX’s funeral.
“Additionally, we are not selling any merch (merchandise) or raising money for Earl’s funeral. If anyone is requesting for money for his funeral please be aware the person is a scammer. We will keep the public posted on funeral/memorial service arrangements.”
In a separate statement to Complex, DMX’s family said: “There have been a few rumors following our loved one, Earl Simmons’, passing that we’d like to clear up. No one has bought Earl’s masters.”
