Critics and child advocates called for the NCAA to levy the so-called “death penalty” on Penn State. But just moments ago, NCAA president Mark Emmert hit Penn State with a $60 million fine and a 4-year suspension during a press conference.
Saying Penn State was too big to fail, Emmert spared Penn State the dreaded “death penalty.” Instead, he stripped the school of its football wins from 1998 through 2011 — which places Joe Paterno behind football legends Eddie Robinson and Bear Bryant as the most winningest coaches in football history.
In addition to losing 1 year in football revenues, the NCAA also imposed a 4-year bowl ban on Penn State. The NCAA will allow Penn State football players to transfer to other schools where they will be eligible to play immediately.
The announcement came one day after demolition crews tore down the Joe Paterno statue on the Penn State campus. Paterno, who died in January, is accused of turning a blind eye toward the child molestation charges lodged against his former coach Jerry Sandusky.

RIP PSU football
Idk about vacating the wins though although I can understand their perspective. Its not like the players themselves knew what was going on, it was higher management. That shouldn’t take away from what those players did on the field against their competitors.
I must say, after reading that hateful email in the last post…im exhausted.

You’re welcome. I thought it was you or @jeniefromdabloc that lived there. Couldn’t remember which one. Glad you’re safe. I know the feeling there is somewhat surreal, huh?
Morning EVERYBODY….and a spessha mernin to @Goat. Hey Brudder
Morning! IMO this penalty was nothing. You are talking about years of unreported criminal activity, and they get four years no bowl games, but the NCAA tried to throw the book at USC cause Reggie Bush was driving a range. I extern for a major NCAA sports school and part of the problem is that the NCAA is more concerned w/ increasing and capitalizing on revenue than they are about the actual ethics of sports. Child Molestation and a culture of silence is much worse than extra-benefits, that ALL student-athletes may face at almost every Div I school. But they choose to make examples out of the big ones like SC’….wouldn’t have agreed with the death penalty but they should have taken the time to make a bigger example out of Penn State, especially when it went all the way to the top.

but Penn State gets a penalty and suspension for raping kids
______________________
Tom Joyner made a good point this morning. SMU received the death penalty for paying its players
Not saying Penn State isn’t a big-name school, just saying when it comes to the student athletes taking extra benefits, the only ones the NCAA seems to care about are the bigger schools vs the mid-majors or smaller D-1’s
so what of (the rest of) the CRIMINAL investigations ?
>>>>>>>>>>>> Morning folks !
the problem is that the NCAA is more concerned w/ increasing and capitalizing on revenue than they are about the actual ethics of sports.
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
That is why I don’t agree with vacating the wins, that doesn’t make sense to me. The players worked their asses off and now its just erased?! That is not fair.
However, the rest of the verdict I agree with 100%.

My point exactly…..they pick & choose who they want to make examples out of….and pay-for-play is something the NCAA gets pissed about because to them, that is THEIR revenue
This penalty Penn State received is worse than the death penalty, imo. They will never be the same again.
@Ty: I think SMU got hit with that because that is a clear violation of NCAA rules. That is on the books and they said fukk it so the NCAA said fukk you and yo program
The players are free to go to another school to be eligible said the NCAA guy.
Vacating wins and championships has always seemed dumb to me. It’s like how do we erase our memories of those games? I’m a huge sports fan and folks don’t just forget…and the people who’ve passed Joe Pa are only winners by default

They removed the statue, their name is smeared, hell damn near the whole administration is either fired/resigned/arrested.
I think PSU has to take some time off to rebuild on the football end.
PSU is still a damn good school for academics
but the morale is going to be shot for a long time unless their basketball does something (which they won’t lol).
@Gigi that’s only because there is no rule about criminal activity such as child molestation in the NCAA rule books, only gambling and such…again it’s about their revenue…they probably won’t even amend the rule book to include this type of stuff, but school’s have begun to take notice and make changes on their own so that’s good.

Penn State will rebuild though…trust! Too much money and alumni loyalty for their legacy to go down in flames forever and when they do it will be the storyline of the century. On a sidenote: I was accepted there for undergrad in none other than 2001, SO glad I fought my mom on it & didn’t go there cause child molestation is just something I can’t get with….ESPECIALLY after knowing it’s happened to me and I wrote about it in my personal statement….kinda weird now that I think about it :thinks:

Walking: they sure won’t because NCAA deals with the students. Now if the coaches were fukking the student athletes then that would be something to write a rule about. To me this is a complicated issue for them because there are no clear violations at least when it comes to the rules they have in place.
To me NCAA is trying to say: Hey, we can’t kill your program because you didn’t violate our rules, but for morality’s sake we have to do something so others can get off our back.
Hey Prynsexxxxxxxxx!!!!!!!!!
LOL @ KDub….Hey that ain’t nice.

i think it’s MOST appropriate in this particular case because they wanted joe pa to get that record so bad. and even after the shyt hit the fan, they let him get that last win before they fired him. joe pa wasn’t coaching the team by then anyway. the win is STILL a win but it doesn’t count in the record book. it’s not like they can make it a loss.
@Gigi But at one point in time Sandusky was on the coaching staff, no?
And they have rules governing coaches and how they deal with outsiders so I don’t think it’s necessarily impossible for them to address this. In the grand scheme of things I will remember this over say a Cam Newton or Reggie Bush type situation and I’m into sports, so the general public most definitely will.
Joe Pa is DEAD. As FAWK. Why are they persecuting this man in DEF? I mean yes he shoulda SAID something. He coulda handled it different. YES. But one man ALONE did not run that administration or was the SOLE decision maker. If Joe Paterno woulda squealed…does that mean Sandusky was gonna stop fawkin lil boys in showers? Prolly NOT. Did Paterno telling mean that it was gonna ERASE all the damage Sandusky had already DONE by the time Joe found out about it? Nope. Is all of this (removing a piece of rock, rewriting sports history, etc) going to fix ANYTHING?

Kdubb I think they are coming so hard for Joe Pa because they did all of the covering up to protect the program that he was darn near the leader of. So in a way it was protecting him. At least the way I see it.

I believe the folks who were being recruited by other teams WILL get to play and get money to go to another school.

@KDub If JoePa had done the right thing in 1998, we wouldn’t be talking about this now.
6:26 AM PT — Well, that didn’t take long — a PSU football recruit has ALREADY decommitted to the school.
Ross Douglas — a cornerback from Ohio — will no longer attend PSU in the Fall. No word on where he will play.

He ain’t the first one
Think about it though, those players transferring and being ALLOWED to play doesn’t mean they WILL play.
Half of these schools have who they want, they’ll take the PSU recruits but unless they have an injury or something, they’ll probably sit on the bench.
What about the Juniors and Senior players? What are they gonna do? Transfer schools to play for a year or two? You also have to think about the academic side and how that’s going to fukk them over. Sad either way you look at it.
And not every school has the playing system and player development that they wanted at PSU. So its not as easy as it sounds.

@Kdub I agree with you on everything EXCEPT about how it was handled. It def won’t stop a pervert from being a pervert but the main reason why they continue is because our society perpetuates a culture of silence. JUST SPEAK UP, it may have saved those addtl kids from getting booty rammed IN penn state showers. He felt comfy enough to continue doing it there cause he knew folks wouldn’t do anything. All they said was hey, just don’t use our facilities, but he could still bring the kids there to reel them in which was part of his sick way to recruit boys for his pleasure
If ANYBODY would have gone to the police, this could have been dealt with years ago.
If Dean Smith woulda did the right thing back in 1981-82 we wouldnt know not ISH about no Mike Jordan. My pernt is that shyt gets covered up all the time in college sports and if NCAA going to pick and choose what gets uncovered I think it ALL should get uncovered. Cause please believe at the end of the DAY THEY (NCAA) know what the fawk going on. But when public outrage gets so LOUD about any given situation…they like *SIGH* “We gonna HAVE to punish XYZ institution so the entire public doesnt stop believing in NCAA sports and they ALL turn on us”. It all about money. College sports is a business.
NCAA is just as much at fault as Penn State! They in cahoots!

Im glad they imposed “something” on the school… All of the so called educators and coaches and board members should be ashame of themselves for not speaking up and saving the kids that are victims…What if that was your child? relative?? They all should be charged themselves..I would consider that aiding and abetting..**throwing my .02 cents in the offering plate**

@dancer strangely enough, all the vicitms were white. That kinda shocked me due to the high amount of black people that live in this area.
This particular theatre is sketchy anyway. I’ve taken my Son to some matiness, but on Friday and Saturday nights, there are young teens wilding out, cussing like sailors and being disrespectful with the new found freedom that they have discovered while out of their Parents line of sight. We usually go someplace completely different when heading to a movie. The bodies weren’t even removed from the theatre until Friday evening at about 5PM, almost 14 hours after the massacre. I nwo that’s for investigation purposes, but until the bodies were removed, every entrance to the mall was blocked off and the major streets surrounding the multi-plex were cordoned off by police vehicles…
The memory made me throw up in my mouth a bit….

Oh Twin! Well hopefully they are over by now
TUM, TUM, TUM, TUMS
I know i am late people, but hello- and excuse my rant…
my twin sons are juniors at Penn and will be seniors this fall semester. i was all more elated that the statue was removed, and even though my boys did not chose to play ball at Penn right after high school, they will remain alumni after graduating. this is something that will follow this school’s history down from generation to generation… a black mark…and just as their curriculum is strict, they’ve received the same lashing; what i mean is when they withdraw from a class or fail a class, that letter stays as most colleges are doing now. that F is like a scarlet letter that will never be removed or ever be able to be fixed. at 1st i thought it was a raw deal because it can really bring a kid down when he/she is trying to make it through all the while working and studying…but now Penn received their F that will never go away. I wonder how it feels to hire staff and glorify molesters and pedophiles by covering up their bull $#hit for years all for the sake of statistics and rank. I say good for them. I say get rid of the statutes and memories and all memorabilia of the that staff and time, and start paying attention to those children who will never get their lives back!
