A gunman opened fire on New Yorkers and tourists as they prepared to enter the Empire State building’s observatory deck Friday morning.
According to news reports, the gunman was killed by police officers after he shot at least 10 people in front of the Empire State Building around 9 a.m.
Officials said two people are dead, including the gunman, and 9 others suffered gunshot wounds and other injuries related to the shooting. Police aren’t clear if the shooting was a dispute between two people, but police say there is no link to terrorism.
The gunman, who is described as white, was armed with a sawed off shotgun, according to law enforcement.
The mass shooting renewed calls for gun control after the recent mass shootings in Colorado by a deranged college student who ordered thousands of ammunition online.
Proponents of gun control say guns should be taken out of the hands of citizens who are not in the military or law enforcement.

Agents with the Federal Bureau of Investigation are on the scene, in addition to NYPD officers, an FBI spokesman said in an email.
Jill Greenwood, an account supervisor at Prosek Partners in the Empire State Building, said she heard several gun shots beginning at 9:04 a.m. Friday. In the minutes afterward, people inside the building began streaming out because an echo from the shots made it sound like they were coming from inside the building.
Later, she was told by building security the shooting took place outside the front of the entrance to the building’s observation deck at 34th Street and 5th Avenue.“We heard these gunshots, it sounded like fireworks. So, we both got up and went to the window and looked down,” said Ms. Greenwood, a 30-year-old New York resident.

There would be no restricting guns in this country not as long as the NRA is funding the govt. What they need to is for people to acquire special licenses in order to purchase anything other than a hand gun. After 9/11 it is crazy that someone could shoot so many people at a major landmark in New York!! We do need gun control laws in this country. They have them in Canada and there were a total of 68 people killed by hand guns in Canada last year. There were over 20,000 deaths by hand guns in the U.S. last year.

Never should have made guns legal. The dumbest chit ever done.
Yes he could’ve thrown acid or knives but he wouldn’t have been able to kill or harm as many people as quickly (a bomb is another story). Someone with a knife can be subdued, especially by trained law enforcement, faster than someone with a semiautomatic weapon. Yes people are to blame for the violence but allowing them to own weapons that can cause severe damage makes them all the more dangerous to the innocent public.

This couldn’t be further from the truth. Anyone who looks up the history of Nazi Germany know many Germans were killed because they were stripped of their guns among other inherent rights. They had no means of protecting themselves
2nd Amendment was for the purpose to protect us not only from the crazies, but from the very government that would eventually turn on us and force us to give up on our guns. It is to protect us from the TYRANNY that emerges out of a defenseless society.
These string of gun shootings are nothing more than an FFO, possibly leading to the rumored Martial Law around the November elections. Be prepared is all I can say.
