Whoopi Goldberg ripped Netflix over the new Jeffrey Dahmer series titled Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story.
Actor Evan Peters portrays Dahmer who killed and cannibalized 17 mostly Black, gay males in Milwaukee, Wisconsin from the 1970s to 1990s.
‘Monster’ also stars Niecy Nash (right) as a concerned neighbor who called Milwaukee police multiple times to complain about the strange sounds and foul odors coming from Dahmer’s apartment.
The View discussed Netflix’s No. 1 series on Wednesday. Goldberg expressed frustration that the series traumatized the families of the victims all over again.
“Did we need another movie about Jeffrey Dahmer? she asked, before adding “All right, moving on.”
“If that were my family, I’d be enraged,” she said during a heated discussion with her co-hosts. “Because it is being killed over and watching your child get [killed], and then you have to listen to how it went and all this other stuff that, as a person who’s lost someone like that, it’s just — you can’t imagine.”
She continued: “Over and over and over! I think, if you’re gonna tell the stories, be aware that a lot of the people who are part of these stories are still with us.”
The LGBT+ community lashed out at Netflix for initially categorizing the series under the LGBTQ tag instead of under the True Crime tag.
“Hey hi @netflix I IMPLORE you please reconsider having Dahmer with the LGBTQ tag, especially as one of its tags right when you open the app,” one user tweeted.
A TikTok user said it’s “technically true” to label the series “LGBTQ,” because Dahmer was gay, “but this is not the representation we’re looking for.”
Some Twitter users accused Netflix of “romanticizing” Dahmer, saying he would not have gone on a killing spree if society was more tolerant of homosexuals back then.
