Despite a tremendous marketing campaign, the gay romantic comedy Bros flopped at the box office on opening weekend.
According to Box Office Mojo, Bros, featuring Black trans actors TS Madison (left) and Miss Lawrence (right), took in only $4.8 million over the 3-day weekend. The movie’s budget was $22 million.
The film stars Billy Eichner as Bobby and Luke Macfarlane as Aaron – two gay men with commitment issues who attempt a relationship with each other.
Eichner, in his first starring role, drops a plethora of meme-worthy quotes. His best line in the movie’s trailer is, “Gay sex was more fun when straight people were uncomfortable with it.”
The movie also stars actress Debra Messing (Will & Grace), drag queen Symone (who won season 13 of RuPaul’s Drag Race), and lesbian actors Amanda Bearse (Married… with Children) and Dot-Marie Jones (Glee).
Hollywood celebrated a major studio release starring two gay leads and a predominantly gay cast for the first time in history.
A Daily Beast headline reads: “Luke Macfarlane in ‘Bros’: The Hottest Movie Star of the Year Is a Gay Man. Finally!”
However, moviegoers made it clear that gay rom-coms with two male leads are not happening.
Eichner claims “homophobia” is the reason the movie didn’t do well at the box office.
In a tweet, he blamed “straight people” for boycotting the movie:
“Even with glowing reviews, great Rotten Tomatoes scores, an A CinemaScore etc, straight people, especially in certain parts of the country, just didn’t show up for Bros. And that’s disappointing but it is what it is.”
.
