General Hospital actress Sonya Eddy passed away from post-surgery complications on Monday. Her death was confirmed by Oscar-winning actress Octavia Spencer on Tuesday. Eddy was 55.
“My friend @sonyaeddy passed away last night. The world lost another creative angel,” Spencer wrote in an Instagram post. “Her legions of @generalhospitalabc fans will miss her. My thoughts and prayers are with her loved ones, friends, and fans!”
Executive producer Frank Valentini also confirmed her death on Tuesday. “I am heartbroken about the loss of the incredible @TheRealSonyaEd. I truly loved her not only as actress, but as a friend,” he tweeted. “The lights in the hub of the nurse’s station will now be a little dimmer, but her spirit and light will live on in both the show and our set.”
Eddy starred on General Hospital from 2006. She portrayed no-nonsense head nurse Epiphany Johnson, the mother of Stan Johnson (played by actor Kiko Ellsworth).
Eddy also played Epiphany Johnson in the hit SOAPnet spinoff “General Hospital: Night Shift” and in “Seinfeld,” “Married… with Children,” “Seinfeld,” “Home Improvement” “Reba,” “Monk,” “CSI,” “Glee,” and “Fresh Off The Boat.”
Eddy was single and did not have any children.
