Angela Bassett will finally receive a coveted Oscar Award, but the honor is bittersweet. Friends say Bassett had hoped to win an Oscar for her acting skills.
Bassett, 64, was disappointed when she went home empty-handed at the Oscars in March. Rather than award Bassett for a movie role, the Academy will honor her entire body of work.
Bassett’s movie credits include “Boyz N the Hood,” “Malcolm X,” “Waiting to Exhale” and “How Stella Got Her Groove Back.”
She received her first Oscar nomination for her portrayal of Tina Turner in “What’s Love Got to Do With It” and her second nod came earlier this year for “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.”
Angela’s many fans say she should’ve won an Oscar for her accurate portrayal of a scorned woman in Waiting to Exhale.
Bassett, iconic actor/producer Mel Brooks, Michelle Satter and film editor Carol Littleton will receive honorary Oscars at the 2023 Governors Awards in November, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences said Monday.
“The Academy’s Board of Governors is thrilled to honor four trailblazers who have transformed the film industry and inspired generations of filmmakers and movie fans,” Janet Yang, the academy’s president, said in a statement.
Brooks won an original screenplay Oscar for “The Producers.” Bassett, Littleton and Satter have never won an Oscar.
