Houston police arrested 2 suspects in the murder of a 12-year-old girl whose body was found in a Houston creek early Monday.

Officers praised the community for helping them track down the 2 men who raped and strangled Jocelyn Nungaray.

A SWAT team surrounded the Canfield Lake Apartments in Houston early Thursday. They entered an apartment and arrested Johan Jose Rangel Martinez, 21, and Franklin Jose Pena Ramos, 26.

Police said the two suspects ate dinner at a restaurant on Sunday evening before walking to the convenience store where they saw Jocelyn.

The girl walked with them to a nearby bridge where they raped and strangled her. After leaving her body in the creek, they walked to their apartment.

Police said Jocelyn snuck out of her apartment between 10 p.m. and midnight on Sunday. Her body was found in a north Houston creek around 6:15 a.m. Monday.

“We should not have to worry about 12-year-olds being raped and murdered in the City of Houston. Horrible,” Mayor John Whitmire said at a city council meeting Tuesday.

The suspects face capital murder charges. They are being held with no bond since they are in the country illegally.
