The pressure is on President Joe Biden to step down so Vice President Kamala Harris can assume the presidency as a “symbolic gesture.”

Kamala Harris’s former communications director Jamal Simmons has proposed that Biden step down within 30 days so Harris can become the first female president.

Harris lost the presidential election to Donald Trump on Nov. 5. But her camp is still hopeful that she will make history.

Simmons said Biden made a promise to help Harris break the glass ceiling — and he should keep that promise.

“Joe Biden has been amazing but he should fulfill one last promise — to be transitional. Biden should resign and make Kamala Harris the first woman president,” Simmons wrote in a post on X (formerly Twitter).

In an appearance on CNN on Sunday, Simmons said a female president would dominate the news cycle and disrupt Trump’s merchandising as the 47th president.

“This is something that is within Joe Biden’s control.” He continued: “If he did it… It would give Kamala Harris the chance to be the 47th president of the United States of America. It would disrupt all of Donald Trump’s paraphernalia. Right? He’d have to rebrand everything. And it would make it easier for the next woman who ran for president to not have to worry about the historical weight of being the first.”

Simmons stressed that by stepping down, Biden would ensure that Harris doesn’t have to certify Trump’s presidential win in January.

“It’d turn [the] tables on Trump, keep Kamala from presiding over Jan. 6,” he added.

Others have also called on the 81-year-old president to resign from office. He previously stepped aside so Harris could run for president in July.

But Biden has shown no signs that he will step down and hand over the nation’s top office to Harris.

Question: Should Joe Biden resign so Kamala Harris can become president?
