A software engineer is in a Brevard County jail charged with murder and attempted murder in the shooting death of 17-year-old high school student Jordan Davis.
The incident occurred at a Jacksonville gas station on Southside Boulevard on Friday. Michael Dunn, who is white, told police he “felt threatened” by Davis and his friends after he complained about the loud music coming from their car. Davis is African American.
The Atlanta Journal Constitution reports that Jacksonville homicide Lt. Rob Schoonover said Dunn pulled out a weapon and started firing into the vehicle. Davis was shot multiple times and the car was riddled with at leasr 8 bullets.
“Our suspect produced a weapon and started firing into the vehicle. Our victim was shot a couple of times,” Schoonover said. “ … They were listening to the music. It was loud; they [other teens] admitted that. But I mean that is not a reason for someone to open fire on them.”
After the shooting Dunn and his girlfriend casually drove to their Jacksonville hotel. They then returned to their Brevard County home, where he was arrested.
Davis was a well-liked student at Samuel W. Wolfson High School, a magnet school in Duval county.
Dun is vice president of Dunn & Dunn Data Systems, a software development company in Vero Beach, Florida.
The tragic case is already drawing comparisons to 17-year-old Trayvon Martin, who was gunned down by a cowardly neighborhood watch man who claimed he felt threatened by the unarmed teen.
Florida is one of the states that have controversial Stand Your Ground laws on the books. The law supports an individual’s right to stand their ground and use deadly force when they feel threatened.

Dunn’s attorney, Robin Lemonidis, told CNN Monday that Dunn told police that he reacted after having seen a gun barrel in the window of the teens’ car and after hearing a profanity-laced string of threats against him and his girlfriend while the teens motioned they were opening the door.
Lemonidis said that was when Dunn reached for his gun and opened fire on the vehicle. She added that, “When all the evidence has been flushed out, I believe that it will be extremely clear that Mr. Dunn acted as any responsible firearm-owner would have under the same circumstances.”
Eight or nine shots were fired at the teens’ car, the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office statement added.
There were no guns found inside the teens’ car, the statement said.
Lemonidis said her client and his girlfriend left the scene after the shooting, fearing that they had encountered gang members and that more would follow.
The couple went to a local hotel for the night, and saw the news the next morning that Davis had died. They returned to Dunn’s home in Brevard County, where local police arrested him Saturday on an out-of-county warrant.
Dunn was arraigned Monday afternoon, and Lemonidis said she entered a not-guilty plea on her client’s behalf.
Ron Davis, the victim’s father, told CNN affiliate WAWS that he wants to see justice, “Whether it be through the legal system or to God. God’s going to punish him for that, so me, I don’t want to do anything to him.”

That’s why I asked was he alone or were there other kids with him. Another way to help would be to kindly ask the man was he ok or to ask if he needed to be walked somewhere with out even addressing the boy.

Why couldn’t the man just tune out the music? Some gas stations have signs, just like @ drive thru banks “No Loud Music”.
This intersection is extremely busy at all hours of the day and night so I’m guessing there are a number of witnesses. I know eye-witness testimony can be somewhat shaky but in this case it will be very much needed since the gas station states they didn’t have any cameras. This guy was coming back from his son’s wedding reception….he probably was drunk. Add too many drinks and being an intolerent a$$ and this is what you have. So sad
The young man shot is the cousin of a childhood friend. My friend posted on FB earlier this week, the family can not get the answers they need. They are being blocked bureaucratically by police. They indeed consider this similar to Trayvon Martin’s case. Please send your prayers up for this family. If anyone is based in Florida and/or familiar with the area in which this tragedy happened, please respond with names of community leaders. The extended family is based out of California.
I live 2 min from this gas station it is NOT in the hood ..It is nice suburb..It is at a high traffic intersection and the gas station is always busy…He said he saw a shotgun, but then fled because he felt threatened that they would call their friends…Why would they call their friends if they had a shotgun??.. No drugs or guns were found in the vehicle..None of it makes sense..He then went to a hotel and fled to his home 3 hrs away…Where he supposedly turned himself in, because he did not want to turn himself in, in a strange county without representation..More like he wanted to sober up…I was up that way Sunday, and the Black Panthers were there being harassed by the police(six police cars) ..So im sure we’ll be hearing more of this story…
