Phoenix Mercury star Kahleah Copper ran off the court after losing her wig during the Mercury’s 88-72 win over the Mystics in Washington, D.C. on Sunday.

Kahleah was coming off a screen late in the 3rd quarter when Mystics player Jade Melbourne accidentally snatched off her wig. Copper picked her wig up off the floor, placed it on her head and ran off the court as the refs stopped play for a substitution.

The humiliating moment was handled with empathy by WNBA announcers Meghan McPeak and Christy Winters Scott. “Oh no, oh no, oh no, she gon’ go ahead to the back… oh no,” they said, as the cameras followed Kahleah to the tunnel.

Kahleah didn’t return to the floor until midway through the 4th quarter. But she was unable to contribute much, and she was benched with just over 2 minutes left in the game.

Fortunately, her teammates picked up the slack and the Mercury won the game after 3 straight losses.

X users re-posted Kahleah’s July 19 tweet that said, “Everytime I cheat on my hairstylist bad things happen.”

Nearly 70% of all WNBA players wear wigs or hairweave during games. Their wigs are usually held securely by head bands. But accidents do happen.

WNBA players can’t get a full wig install because they sweat so much and the wigs have to be removed and washed after every game.
