Kansas City Chiefs linebacker Jovan Belcher, 25, reportedly shot and killed his girlfriend during an argument in the early morning hours on Saturday. He then drove to the nearby Arrowhead team practice facility where he turned the gun on himself in front of his shocked coach and general manager.
Police say Belcher shot and killed Kasandra Perkins, the mother of his infant daughter, early Saturday.
Authorities did not release a motive for the murder-suicide, though there are reports that Belcher and Perkins argued after she returned home from attending a Trey Songz concert.
Fans and players were shocked and saddened by the news, but the game between the Chiefs and the Carolina Panthers will be played as scheduled on Sunday.
Police received a call from a woman who said her daughter had been shot multiple times at a home near the team’s practice facility.
Upon arrival, police were informed that Perkins was shot by her boyfriend, Belcher, a Kansas City Chiefs player. At about that time, police received a call the Chiefs’ practice facility about a man with a gun.
“The description matched the suspect description from that other address. We kind of knew what we were dealing with,” police spokesman Darin Snapp said. The player was “holding a gun to his head,” Snapp said.
At the practice facility, Belcher, was approached by General Manager Scott Pioli and Coach Romeo Crennel.
“They said the player was actually thanking them for everything they’d done for him,” Snapp said. “They were just talking to him and he was thanking them and everything. That’s when he walked away and shot himself.”
Belcher and Perkins were parents to 2-month-old Zoey Michelle, according to sports blogger Stiletto Jill.
Belcher is a graduate of Maine College. He signed with the Kansas City Chiefs in 2009 for a reported $1.9 million.
