R&B singer Stacy Lattisaw released her single “What You Need” in 1989. The song didn’t chart but it was popular on the radio and in the dance clubs.

“What You Need” was the lead single off Stacy’s 10th studio album of the same name.

Other singles off the album include the No. 1 hit “Where Do We Go from Here” (feat. Johnny Gill), “Dance for You” and “I Don’t Have the Heart”.

The music video for “What You Need” features a young dancer named Sean “Puff Daddy” Combs. He would later go on to launch his own record label, Bad Boy Records. Combs helped shape the careers of artists such as the Notorious B.I.G., Mary J. Blige, Carl Thomas, Faith Evans, 112, Total, Usher, and others.

Stacy, 58, began singing professionally when she was 11 years old. She signed her first record deal with Cotillion Records at age 12.

She found success with Narada Michael Walden, a former drummer-turned music producer.

Narada produced Stacy’s second album, Let Me Be Your Angel, recorded when she was 13. He played drums and percussion on the album.

Nile Rodgers, co-founder of Chic, played electric guitar, while Randy Jackson (“American Idol” judge) played the bass guitar and acoustics on the album.

Narada also produced hit singles for Stacy, including “Jump to the Beat”, Dynamite!”, Perfect Combination” (feat. Johnny Gill), and “Love on a Two-Way Street.”

Stacy signed with Motown in 1986. What You Need was her final album before she retired from the music industry in 1992 to focus on her family and ministry.
