Television series featuring Black families in a positive light are scarce on network television and cable TV.
Young people are beginning to notice their families aren’t represented on TV anymore.
Black shows that once dominated the TV landscape include “Good Times,” “The Cosby Show,” “Martin,” “Sister2Sister,” “Moesha,” “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air,” “Living Single,” “Family Matters,” “A Different World” and more.
A woman is going viral for questioning the lack of positive Black TV shows.
The woman said, “Why as a Black person I can turn on the TV and find not one single show that portrays my community in a positive light?”
She noted “The Cosby Show” made Black people believe they could become doctors.
She continued: “Carl Winslow is a police officer. I can go be a police officer if I want to. We don’t have not a single show that portray us in a positive light.”

She noted that the “Powerbook” series on Starz portrays Black people as “drug dealers and murderers.”
She complained that “a little Black girl can’t turn on the TV and see a momma and a daddy in a household thriving. It’s either us doing something that’s bad or it’s reality TV which is just showing Black women fight other Black women over nothing like men.”
X user @TheeGooGoo wrote: “I wonder what would happen if we stopped watching the negative stuff they put on. Are we angry enough to boycott what doesn’t serve us as a black community overall?”
@Lizmej12 tweeted: “Real af bc I grew up on the wholesome ones but just to play devils advocate, did those shows represent the reality of black America or did it paint a picture of equality that we all know doesn’t exist.”
And @THEREALSECTION8 wrote: “Willie Lynch in full effect from Tv to Radio.”
