Karmelo Anthony’s stabbing trial is expected to begin this week. Jury selection got underway on Monday, June 1. He is charged with fatally stabbing 17-year-old Austin Metcalf at a track meet in Frisco, Texas on April 2, 2025.
The two athletes got into a fight after Metcalf asked Anthony to leave his school’s tent in the stands at the track meet. Anthony pulled a knife and stabbed the unarmed teen in the chest.
Anthony is charged with 1st-degree murder. Due to his age he does not face the death penalty or life in prison.
Anthony’s lawyers said he acted in self-defense, and they will explain to the jury why he had a utility knife in his backpack at the track meet.

Anthony’s lawyer described him as a straight-A student with no criminal record.
Last year, Anthony’s attorney submitted an indigent form to a judge saying the teen is broke and can’t afford to cover his legal fees. The lawyer requested to withdraw from the case.
Anthony’s family raised over $500,000 in donations last year. A family spokesman asked for more donations and said the money would go to “Stand with us in the fight against white supremacy.”
The family’s GiveSendGo fundraiser collected a total of $612,481.01 as of Monday, June 1. The goal is $1.4 million for legal bills and living expenses.
Anthony is currently free on $250,000 bond and lives with his family in a $900,000 mansion in a gated community.
